Rebels. Misfits. Bad boys who rule the streets. Everyone’s welcome at the worst kept secret in town, just as long as you don’t mind getting your reputation—and your heart—a little dirty.

Welcome to Patchwork House…

Patchwork House is a boy’s club—a mean boy’s club. They made an exception for Tweetie once, and they’re going to make another, because she’s coming home. After two years away and one too many broken hearts, Tweetie swore off skaters—but she never expected Flip.

Flip was the most famous skater in the world until he traded his place at Patchwork with the little girl whose life he ruined. Now Tweetie’s all grown up, and one chance encounter brings them together. He knows the right thing to do is disappear before things get ugly, but he never was very good at being good.

She’s back, and so is he—all bets are off. Nothing will stop this bad boy from finally getting his lost girl. They’re written in the stars, and it’s time she knows it.

The first lesson Flip taught Tweetie was how to fall.It was also the last thing she remembered when they met again, because she didn’t just fall for him.

She slammed.

I went into this book mostly blind. I loved the cover and when the chance came to read an ARC, I jumped at it.

The story began somewhere in the middle, and it gave sort of a disorienting feel. I didn't know any of the players, or what Patchwork House was. It didn't turn me off though, I only wanted to keep reading to find out what in the world was going on.

Many answers were given early on, but a lot was slowly revealed at the story went on, making it pretty un-putdownable.

There were so many lines in this book that either made me smile or want to curl up inside them because they were so delicious. I am a big fan of this author's way with words.

Tweetie is an interesting character. She's been raised in a way that might have made her hard, but she isn't. She's compassionate, maybe sometimes to a fault. She puts others feelings before her own. She wants to be part of the group more than anything. She's also a brave skateboarder, making a name for herself at a time where there weren't many girls competing.

Flip drove me nuts in a lot of ways, but I got it. The push and pull, advance and retreat, made me want to pull my hair out, but again, I couldn't stop reading. *Just kiss, you fools!* But listen, my most favorite thing to read in a book is a hero who pines, and Flip gave really freaking good pine. He pined are years and years. I *felt* his yearning.

This book takes place in 1989, and I don't think it could work at any other time. It's not loaded with 80's references, so it feels modern. But, I was a little kid in 1989, and I remember seeing skater boys in parks. It was the height of skateboarding in the collective conscious. We had Bill and Ted, Gleaming the Cube...and Skater Boy.

I can't wait for the next books in this series, especially Daniel. I just know he's going to break my heart.

One girl in the midst of rebels. The girl they all fiercely protected but he desperately loved from afar. Now he's done with staying away but being close to her means hurting her.

Because he is hiding secrets. Secrets that could destroy the love he's been pining for years.

I am not of this world anymore. How dare Mary do this to me?? Making me fall in love with Tweetie and the Rebel Gods within pages? Absolutely unfair!!

Y'all I'm a fool for these misfit boys with their tattoos and their brooding and their smartass remarks and all of their issues. Man, I am a sucker for bad boys with a heart of gold and MCG gave me exactly THAT.

Tweetie is my precious baby that I need to protect from this World. I love this kid. She has been through so much and yet she never lost the wonder from her eyes. She found her tribe, her people, her love and she became this fierce Goddess that just makes life a better place for herself and everyone she love. I adore her too much.

Flip, my sweet broody sad boy!!! Ugh, when a guy pines for his love and then he's had enough and he is like I'm gonna convince the love of my life that we belong together, I just feel it hard. SO DAMN HARD!!! His love for Tweetie and his belief in her made my heart pitter patter. I was legit on the edge of seat whenever he would talk to her cuz I was waiting for him to scream out his feelings in her face.

This story, man! I was 259% invested in everything that was happening and I did not want it to stop.

Not only it is one of the best NA I've read in a while but the dang representation! I am so happy to read about an Asian character as lead. Not only that, this entire story is filled with characters from different ethnicities and cultures. I am so freaking pumped to read more books in this universe that I am almost gagging with the excitement.

You guys, I love MCG so hard. She understands teen angst and young love like no one else. She wrote these characters like a dream and the story that followed was just so beautiful that you cannot help but fall in love.

I can't stop gushing about my babies. I need more so much more but till then I'll keep re-reading my sweet Flip and Tweetie.

Skater Boy combined so many of my favorite things beautifully into one unique novel. Strong and defiant, yet compassionate heroine. Obsessive alpha male. Angst. The down-to-the-bone, soul-crushing kind of love. The diversity in this book among its characters is one to thrive for.

Flip and Tweetie are the best example of soul mates I've read in a book lately. Soul mates at the wrong time, with their pasts fighting against them being united completely. Tweetie is a badass. Okay?! Bad. Ass. She's a skater chick, raised by society's outcasts, Rebel Gods, and dressed in their hand-me-down boys clothes. You would think that the way she was raised that she would be this hard bitch. But gah, she's not. Her heart is so full and ready to give. She wants to fit in so badly, but she's not going to compromise who she is at the core. She Flip is, *sigh* Flip. Guys got a bad rep. He's a big ‘ol softy tho, but only for his woman.

I'm not one for a ‘slow burn’ books. I just can’t get into them. I need the action and drama and FEEEEELS pretty early on in a book to keep my attention. Skater Boy had all of the above packed into a slow burn. You don't feel like anything is going slow because you're so engrossed into every longing stare across the room, every pull forward and push away, every almost kiss where lips are grazing lips and breaths are inhaled.

Once Skater Boy was over, I couldn't pick up anything for days. Weeks later I'm still thinking about that one book that took place at the Patchwork House. It made me want to skate (you know, I can't, so Id wrap myself up in bubble wrap while I wait for some cutie to push me over and teach me the first rule of skating. To fall. But then Id cry, and make the boy feel bad for me then we'd live happily ever after. Gah, Kris, get out of your tangent dreams.) What it really makes me want to do in real life is blare some Sk8er Boy and channel my inner Avril. Spray paint some shit and flip off the po-pos (not really because Im not fit for the prison life). Skater Boy makes you believe that YOU CAN. YOU CAN BE A BADASS TOO. It was so beautifully unique. Read this book. Breathe this book. Obsess over this book. Flip will stalk your heart, and you'll so desperately love every second of it.

Breath in, breath out.

I just literally finished this book and my head is still spinning from the amazing story I've read.
There are so many flashes from everything that happened in Tweetie and Flip's life that I'm not sure where to start this review.

First of all I NEED to YELL out loud how AMAZING this book is. The way it was written, the slow burn of a love so big, so intense that mark you without even touching it. Every page is a covered layer ready to be uncovered... it is absolutely FANTASTIC!

Emotions twirl around secrets in Patchwork House lead by four young men. The Rebel Gods. Until they were only three. Tweetie was raised between those Gods, living a life full of rules. She was sheltered from everything they were, but she's all grown up now and she's going to slam into her shadow.
Then there's Flip. Flip couldn't be more perfect than he is, even when all I wanted was to slap him sometimes during my reading, hahaha.

I need to stop here. I don't want to give away anything more, just know that the characters of this book all deserve their story told and I cant wait to read them all!

Think of this book as a life lesson of understanding and pure angst. So many broken dreams and selflessness decisions. A love so pure and so beautiful that only a God could ever live it.

'Skater boy': Is the first, full length New Adult book in new to me author Mary Catherine Gebhard's ‘Patchwork house’ series. Spoken in 'Dual Perspectives.' This is Tweetie's and Flips story. Image and video hosting by TinyPic

MY REVIEW AND OTHERS: can also be found on my blog:
➽ KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS Image and video hosting by TinyPic Once upon a time, there was a land ruled by all-powerful and unyielding gods..

Patchwork House is one of the most notorious houses in Heaven Falls, housed by rebels, runaways and misfits. Housing Boys only. Until that all changed within a blink of an eye and they went against their rules and allowed a girl to move in. And the three surrogate boys who raised her. They were the rebel gods of Heaven Falls, and their religion was sin, debauchery, and corruption...and they were worshipped as they should be...

A girl given the nickname Tweetie "Look at that crazy blonde hair and those intense blue eyes," She's like fucking Tweetie bird."

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Daniel was a legendary god within his own right, a street fighter to the core
King was the founder of the Patchwork House, he came from the good side of town and could've gone pro snowboarding but that's a topic not touched on.
Romeo was going places in the world with his punk rock.
And then there's Flip, the legendary skater boy and uber famous. The boy who stayed in the shadows. The boy who secretly loved a girl.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Tweetie left the safe haven they'd offered her after she graduated, two years go by and suddenly she's back, but Flip has also returned and things are going to get turned upside down.

I loved this unique storyline, a few tweaks and this would’ve been a 5 star read for me. In the beginning it was hard to get into because it started off in present time, making me question if there was a book before this, but that wasn’t the case, it flips from present to past, if you’re not paying attention to the chapter prompts you can easily become confused. I think it would’ve flowed better if it started in the past then worked its way to the present, because at times it was messy. But as I said a few tweaks and it would’ve easily slid into that 5 star slot. Another thing is the Heroine's nickname Tweetie should this be spelt Tweety? Like tweety bird.

*Copy from Hidden Gems Books ARC Reviews - for honest review*

This is my very first read by Mary Catherine Gebhard so I really didn't know what to expect but... When I saw this beautiful cover and read the synopsis on Hidden Gems I could not pass it up and holy hell, I love it!!! I was hooked from beginning to end and I seriously couldn't put it down. This is defiantly one of my favorite reads of the year. So happy I give it a chance :) It did not disappoint. Skater Boy really pulled at my heart-strings and made me tear up in a few places 💔. It has so many FEELS!!! It was also funny and sweet, raw and intense, and steamy 😉. I enjoyed the twists and turns and bumps along the way. It was one hell of a roller coaster ride! It has all the things that make a book great! The plot was intriguing and captivating, I devoured this in one sitting. Oh yeahhh, I was up late into the night with this one lol. The world-building and oh, these characters are so wonderfully done I couldn't help but love them all. They are incredible and very interesting. I can't wait to learn more about these misfit bad boys throughout the series. I have such a soft spot for sad, tuff, brooding, screw the world kinda bad boys and that's what I got! They have so much depth and honestly, there isn't one character I can say I hated. So that's definitely a plus. I love all the drama, the arguments, the forgiveness, and the unconventional family and the love that was created out of tragedy, loss, and secrets.

Patchwork House: Home to rebels, runaways, & other misfits.
4 founders: King, Flip, Daniel, and Romeo.
Snowboarder, Skater, Streetfighter, and Punk Rocker.
Also known as: The rebel gods of Heaven Falls.
They are bad news, the corrupt, the nonconformists.
#1 Rule: Only boys allowed, until Tweetie changes everything.

“Though she be but little, she is fierce.”

Tweetie is so sweet and so sheltered, and yet she is also very fierce when need be. She isn't afraid to stand up for herself. Even with all the bullshit, this girl has gone through throughout her life she still has this lightness and wild spirit about her. She has a huge heart and loves with all that she is and is very understanding and forgiving.

“Tweetie and I were destiny.”

Flip the lost rebel god. My poor sweet, loving guy. He stole my heart and no, I don't want it back! Flip is filled with so much regret, remorse, and sadness 😭. He is just so amazing! I love him so much!! All he wants is to be with the love of his life and he's tired of hiding in the shadows even though he knows it's what's best because he doesn't want to hurt her but the pull is just too strong and he can't fight it anymore. So he has to convince her that they belong together and... always have. Consequences be damned. His love for Tweetie is inspiring and it made my heart sore and tender.

“We weren't villains; we were outsiders.”

I love King, Daniel, and Romeo so so much as well. Such incredible guys. I love nothing more than bad boys with big ole hearts of gold. They broke the rules for Tweetie, though very reluctantly at first. They were young and Patchwork was definitely no place for a little girl to grow up but they (with the help of Flip) did the best they could. Tweetie became everything, she was the girl the music stopped for. King was her father figure, her friend, her protector and her big brother. They were all really close but she and King had a special bond. (I'm looking so forward to having King and Pip's story!)

I also really enjoyed the character of Sparky, Bacon, and Pants. They are not main character but still wonderful all the same.

“Love was messy. Love was complicated. You took a leap and you hoped you didn't slam.”

Really all I have left to say is, READ THE FREAKING BOOK! It is truly addictive and all I wanna do right now is go lay in a corner somewhere and hibernate until the next book is released. Because I might truly die from the wait 😭😭😭!!! You will not be disappointed.

I’m ashamed to admit that it is the first book that i’ve read by the author but I ’m so glad that I rectified that as Mary will have a reader for life.
Oh, Skater Boy, how many memories have you brought! Yes, I am the X generation kid that played all my spare time in the park with her friends and sometimes just staring and fangirling over a nice skater boy for ages.
I really like this book for so many reasons.
The author has created a world where a group of friends share the same house and live their life alone, under strict rules created by them but important to keep them safe and together all the time.
Tweetie is sweet and at times a lost soul but she is protected by all of the boys, even when she doesn't want to when she wants to dip her toe in all this new feelings and experiences that appear when she is sixteen. Oh, how I wish I could have a window to sneak out from my room ( but living at the 8th floor in a block of apartments it can be dangerous 😁). I cried and felt so many feelings for her because we get to read her story from when she's 9 years old till present at 19 years but we're in 1989 in that present and many things were a bit different from now.
Flip is a great character and the author has done a great job in showing how they grow up, showing their transformation through the years, but one thing is steadily increasing all this time and that is his feelings for Tweetie with every page and chapter read. He is always with her, even when he needs to stay behind, always with his insecurities and remorse thoughts about a situation that happened in the past ( you gonna have to read the book to know what happened and as it's an important twist in the story )
I’ll just say that Tweetie and Flip(Nate) are a perfect match that will have a long way to find their love story and you don't want to miss it. Do I want more of them together? Yes, I do and by more, I mean that they truly deserve a love that bloomed like a beautiful cherry tree in spring.
I’ll fight with anyone for King and I really hope his book is the next one.
A story about surviving, growing up and falling in love with all your heart, also about forgiveness and the power of true love.
It's definitely a book that you don't want to miss because it's nowhere near anything that you expect, it's more and with more comes the satisfaction of why we love reading romance.

As a follower of Mary Catherine Gebhard’s writing from the beginning of her career, I had high expectations for this book.

I was not disapointed.

Once again MCG has blown me away with the emotions, feelings, and overall fantastic story telling that she brings to each and every novel.

The story of Tweetie and Flip’s journey took me right back to being a teenager and falling in love. Everything in MCG’s latest novel is critically on point from the chapter titles, to the accurate descriptions of the skater way of life.

The story starts off in the middle of the overall timeline to introduce us to the main characters in Patchwork House. You do need to pay attention the chapter prompts because the story is told throught the lifetime of the characters. It would be easy to lose track of what happened when if you don’t pay attention there. While this can sometimes be off-putting in a book, MCG pulled it off well and I never felt lost.

In fact, the writing in the book was so good that I couldn’t put it down and finished it in less than 36 hours.

Once you get into the world of Flip and all of the Rebel Gods, you too will be back in the angst of teenage love. The intensity between Flip, and Tweetie and the dynamic of the entire Patchwork House Clan is palpable and twists you up inside. Every time Flip and Tweetie take a step closer to unification, they also take a step backward and as a reader it is so easy to find yourself right there feeling everything with the. In addition to Flip and Tweetie’s magnetic pull, I felt King’s anger, Daniel’s heart, and Romeo’s sex appeal. I found myself intrigued by the mystery MCG leaves around the Rebel Gods lives outside of Patchwork House and wanting to know everything about them. While this is an amazing stand-alone novel, knowing that there will be more in the series has me drooling in anticipation for the next installments. I need to know how the roles of these characters play out.

It is also noteworthy how MCG brings a nostalgic time period to life and makes it feel modern. I was filled with memories of my own childhood trauma and drama as I flipped through the pages, but also able to connect with the characters. Also, as in other novels by MCG, I enjoy being able to see the story from the point of view of multiple characters.

I will be reading this book again and again. Mary Catherine Gebhard’s way with words never fails to rip emotions right from my heart. She covers it all, love, hate, anger, anxiety, lust, and every other intense feeling.

From cover to cover, I fell for Flip, and I would fall again, HARD.

I was sent an ARC for a honest review. For the record I freaking love this book. The characters are well developed and the author draws you into their lives in a slow burn.
I’m not a huge fan of YA books,
this one rattled me in a good way.
It takes place in 1989 in the heyday
of skateboarding. I identified with the main character ‘Tweetie’ because I was her back in the day
running with my ‘boys’ while they surfed and drove muscle cars.
Mary Catherine Gebhard is a one click author for me and while different from her other books, this one captivated me from start to finish. I look forward to the rest of the series.

** COMING SOON - FULL REVIEW **

4.25 PB and Banana Crowns

This was my first venture into the world of Mary Catherine Gebhard. From the moment I saw the cover and read the synopsis, I needed to read this book. The cover is original and captivating, and it’s about skate boarders, which is an untapped sport in the romance genre. Add to all that, a new group of rebel gods. It is all the things I love about NA romance wrapped up in a pretty bow.

I really enjoyed the diverse characters that grace the pages of Skater Boy. Romeo, Daniel, King and Flip are all unique and original from their looks to their demons to their desired activity. I loved why they come together and formed the Patchwork house, a place for the outcast to go. These are genuinely good guys who don’t like rules, who want to help those who need it. That being said, I didn’t ever see them as corrupt or depraved. They really are kind of the farthest thing from it. It seemed to be because the town saw them that way that saw themselves that way. There are run-ins with the cops, but not because they did anything but more because the town seems out to get them. Is this a bad thing, no, it just didn’t meet my expectations based on the synopsis.

Tweetie is original, a tomboy, which is generally unheard of in the romance world. She is incredibly sheltered by her Rebel Gods, and there are times that she seemed to be completely and totally clueless. I didn’t understand why she didn’t make connections she should have made. It is insinuated that she did, but that plot point is not threaded through the story. I had no idea she was piecing these things together until she said it with no explanation as to how she pieces all the parts together. This was one of my biggest frustrations, which could have been avoided if there would have been some foreshadowing or some well place intimations that Tweetie wasn’t as oblivious as she seemed. Overall, though, I loved her character. I loved that she is a woman in a male dominated sport. I loved that she inspired other little girls. Like the rebel gods, she was unique.

This is a slow burn, and I do mean SLOW. The chemistry is there between Flip and Tweetie, but it always fades to black. Do I need explicit scenes? No. But I do want some kind of pay off for making me wait and all the build up, and it faded to black. BLACK!!!!!! The physical intimacy in this book read as YA, not NA. And again, if I would have gone into this thinking it was a young adult novel, I would have been okay with fade to black everything because it is YA. This isn’t, though. It is a NEW ADULT ROMANCE, and so I needed something. Anything. There is also a plot point that that didn’t seem plausible to me, but I’m also not expert in criminal law or a police officer, so maybe that is a misconception on my part. I also felt like we were told a lot but also not told enough, and I’m assuming as the series continues, we will know more about them. Maybe see a bit more of how they are corrupt, why the town hates them so much versus them reading as a bunch of boys who throw parties and don’t like rules, very lost boys-esque.

What I did love is the writing style of this book. Mary Catherine Gebhard’s prose is gorgeous. She is beyond talented. I loved the world she built and the premise behind the Patchwork house. I love that these boys are good at their core, and I care enough about them that I NEED their stories. All of them. I honestly enjoyed the romance between Tweetie and Flip, the angst of it all. It is definitely a series I would continue to read.

Was this a favorite? No, but a lot of the reasons seem to be based on my personal preference or expectations walking into the novel. Would I recommend this book to others? Yes. Would I recommend readers to check out her other books? Yes, on her writing alone, I would suggest it. Will I be awaiting book two? You bet. I’ll be excited to see how she develops these characters and this world she has crafted.

This book was one big question mark for me. I started reading and right away I was confused and trying to figure out what exactly was going on. It starts off with the heroine, Tweetie's, POV in the present, which is actually 1989, but then has so many inner thoughts about events from the past that I wasn't honestly too sure if some things were happening in the actual present or if it was something that Tweetie was remembering. If I didn't know this was the first book in this series I
would have thought I had started in the middle of it. There was just that much information stated, but not explained as if I was supposed to somehow know it already. From there it didn't get any less puzzling.

I felt like the author was going for some type of mysterious storytelling that would captivate the reader with all of the "secrets" that were hinted at. But for me the one big secret was very obvious, and all the little hints just made entire sections unclear. There was too much going on without enough information to actually make sense. At least for me. And also the big shocking scene wasn't all that...shocking, I guess I'll say. Like it just wasn't something that was a super big deal to me and I felt like it was blown out of proportion by everyone in the book. It also led to a semi plot hole with something the heroine said about that scene that was never revisited so again, made no sense.

I clearly had issues with the book and if you had asked me in the beginning I would have said it was a lost cause. But I kept reading and I can say that it definitely picked up some and the end of the middle of the story was really good. When Flip and Tweetie started to overshadow the confusion I got way more invested in their story and I started to enjoy it. I liked them as a couple so in the end I'm glad that I gave this book a try.

There's also a lot of unknown information about the other boys of Patchwork that actually has me intrigued about the upcoming stories. This book might not have worked out super well for me but I'm definitely going to give this author another try since I did like the overall story.

Holy moly, what a ride! Using flashbacks from several points in their lives to show the love story of Flip and Tweetie as it progressed over the course of 10 years, Mary Catherine Gephard created the ultimate slow burn and man was I into it. The way it jumped from the present (1989) to the past could get a little confusing if you weren’t paying attention to the chapter headers, but I really enjoyed the way it used the flashbacks to push the story forward. There were so many twists and turns that even though I thought I knew where the story would end up, there was no way to predict how it got there.

One of things I believe the author excelled at is character invention. From the main Patchwork House founders to smaller characters like Penelope, Sparky, Bacon, and Pants, she created characters that made me want to learn more. Even a couple characters we only met once or twice peaked my interest. I loved escaping into this world and can’t wait to find out which of the rebel gods I get to learn about next. Just remember I called dibs on Romeo.

DNF @ 45%

This was a highly anticipated read for me. The premise of a skater girl in a male dominated world was so intriguing. Add in the fact that she was the lone girl in a group of of bad boys who protected her just had me all excited.

My main issue with this book was that I found it extremely difficult to follow this story. It was very confusing and I kept reading parts over and over to try and understand. There seemed to be holes in the plot. Either that or the writing just didn't flow well. I tried to push myself and finish this book but it felt like too much work.

The book goes from the past to the present and switched from the hero to the heroine's POV. I found it hilarious that our heroine Tweetie seemed to act the same at age 8, 13 and 19. All of these characters were so immature. These boys at Patchwork House who took Tweetie in under their care were supposedly bad boys and at one point are referred to as 'gods'. I'm honestly not sure what all of that was supposed to mean but they just seemed like a group of juvenille immature boys. I found none of them sexy or appealing in any way including Flip who is the main hero in the book.

Flip has a secret he is hiding from Tweetie (which I won't get into to avoid spoilers but I have many many thoughts on that incident) and apparently she can't remember that she met him before (I can't wrap my head around this). When Tweetie comes back home to Patchwork House, Flip goes from wanting to leave to avoid her to wanting to claim her as his love in like a day or two??? Sorry but those kind of personality switches so early in a book throw me off balance right away.

I think this book had great potential and I love the whole concept of this story but the execution was just done poorly.

Rebels.

⭐️ 4 "Always Your Shadow" Stars ⭐️
Skater Boy was my first read my Mary Catherine Gedhard and I was really impressed by this first installment in the Patchwork House Series. The concept of the skating world was appealing and refreshing to me and had me really excited. It took me a few chapters to enter the story, but I was soon fascinated by its interesting characters. This romance is a very slow burn and kept me on my toes all read long, anticipating Tweetie and Flip’s feelings to finally grow into more!

The connection between this couple is powerful and very special from their first interaction. Flip is a cocky hero with the most beautiful heart. Throughout the story, we gradually discover their common past and the events that led them to lose contact. Flip is truly devoted to Tweetie and is swoon-worthy. Tweetie is a sweet girl with big dreams. She can appear shy and unsure by moments, but she also shows strength, drive and defiance when it’s necessary.

The whole intrigue of this book was exciting and kept me guessing. This group of misfits are all connected by this same feeling of not belonging, but together they really created their own world at Patchwork House. I loved the sense of family between the Rebel Gods and Tweetie.

This novel was a beautiful surprise that I enjoyed a lot. However, there were little details in the storyline that didn’t make sense for me, because they weren’t explored enough maybe and it’s the reason I couldn’t rate it higher. Otherwise, Skater Boy was a mesmerizing read! Now, I just can’t wait to get the stories about King, Daniel and Romeo!

I think I was expecting some kind of a different story when I started it.
I didn´t love it, which I hoped I would when I started it. The synopsis was very interesting and I found the whole skatboard thing very appealing. The cover is amazing, I love it.
I did like the story, but there was something missing for me. I can´t put my finger on what it is. It´s just missing...something. It had good, likeable moments and I´m interesting to read more about the "Rebel Gods". Their stories look interesting from what was revealed in this book.

My inner Avril Lavigne slammed for this circa late eighties early nineties patchwork of a love story.Nate aka Flip was a very complex and interesting character and Tweetie had no idea what was to come to her

Stupid. Breathless. Brain not working. A shirtless poster was one thing; Flip in person was enough to fry my neurons.

She was spring. She was light. She was forbidden fruit

I will be the first to admit, this wasn’t a book I was expecting from MCG. While saying that, I wasn’t disappointed. I was actually pretty excited to see this side of her.

This book starts off present day, but you quickly get a glimpse of how it all starts. What you don’t get, just then, is how it all fell apart.

Throughout the book this author leads you on a journey of understanding. With each piece she gives you, you feel as though a puzzle is clicking into place.

In the beginning Tweetie is welcomed back into the fold of Patchwork House. She meets her childhood idol, a skater. What she doesn’t realize is her idol knows her better than she knows herself.

Flip has a carefree life. He’s taking off, going places. He doesn’t think about consequences...until that’s all he CAN think about.

This is a book about the evolution of love. It’s super angsty. MCG left me hanging so many times I lost count. She made up for it with a sweet, sweet ending.

The backstory unfolds and you get snippets of the lives of each of the other Rebel Gods at Patchwork House. Those have me chomping at the bit to see every facet of the other characters lives.

This is a huge 5 stars from me and I can see this series being one for the ages.

Years ago, when the main female lead known as Tweetie was younger, she loved to skateboard with her dad despite her home upbringing, she loved her father. Then one day she is with some new friends, and her father is out looking for and crashes and is killed. Tweetie, after some perseverance on her part, goes to live with the motley crew that is known as the Patchwork boys. She stays for a while, and as she gets older, she is the one girl who is off limits to everyone. She is like their little sister. During this time though Tweetie falls hard and fast for a guy, she only knows as Nate. She vanishes for a few years to find the boy she loved, but with only a first name and voice, her journey comes up empty. So Tweetie heads back to Patchwork House where she meets Flip. There is something familiar about Flip, but Tweetie can't put her finger on it. During the story, we have two POVs. We have Tweetie's from her past and present and Flip's and discover Flip's true identity and that he isn't new to Patchwork House and her as she thinks. I have to admit, her not recognizing him annoyed me as she was not only her hero but her first kiss. The moment he spoke, she should have been able to identify his voice. I was in two minds about this book as I loved the whole Peter Pan - Lost boys feel of The Patchwork House, but Tweetie and Flip's story and how it affected everyone started to grate me a bit. The same with the way Flip treated his own family, it was like get some guts and man up, you might have been wrong in the past, but your family freaking loves you. If you love sport and skateboarding and an RH feel to the story with a bit of edge, then check out Skater Boy by Mary Catherine Gebhard.

"They were the Rebel Gods of Heaven Falls, and their religion was sin, debauchery, and corruption...and they were worshiped as they should be."

Skater Boy was my first book by Mary Catherine Gebhard and she wooed me right of my couch while I was reading this great story. At first I kept thinking "It totally feels like I have read this before" and tried to think of a book that might have had the same or similar story line. But I came up empty. Now I keep thinking that this book was made for me to read and the feeling that I know this book already is more like a déjà vu and this totally makes me smile.

"She was spring. She was light. She was forbidden fruit I promised myself I would only taste, not bruise ore bite."

As light as this story might come across at first, this is just the surface. Beneath is so much more. Charged with troubled souls, self-doubt, insecurities, remorse emotions on every level. I enjoyed every minuted I spend with all these beautiful characters and can't wait to read more of them! I fell in love with them. No, I actually slammed.

""I'm going to put the awe back in your eyes," he said, and my breath caught. "You looked at me like I was a god once, and you'll do it again.""

Skater Boy is an exciting story about forgiveness, surviving and falling in love all the way while growing up. A fantastic introduction into the world of Patchwork House and its Rebel Gods.

The first book in a brand new series and what a fantastic way to kick it off. The story flies between timelines alot but I still found it easy to follow.

We start the journey with Tweetie returning to Patchwork House after an absence of two years. It takes time to understand the dynamics of the story and the players. A bunch of misfits have formed a family of their own. As the story progresses the reader realises the main objective has always been to protect Tweetie even at the cost of their own happiness. The feels between Flip and Tweetie are everything. I love a slow burn and found myself salivating for that first kiss. It was so worth the buildup, prepare to swoon. Everyone knows secrets never stay hidden for long and when everything comes out who will be left standing.

I can't express just how much I enjoyed this story and all the characters. Now I just have to find the patience to wait for book two.

Young adults who live above the law, a world-famous skater and a sweet girl who lives under their protection. Welcome to the Patchwork House, where the skateboard is the means of transportation and the walls hide big secrets.

Skater Boy is a total slow-burn that shows the evolution of feelings between Tweetie and Flip, who met when the girl was still a child. A child who lost everything in one moment, but on the other hand gained a group of protectors who accepted her as the only girl to live in Patchwork House- a place for outcasts who lived according to their rules. In this story we get to know King, Romeo and Daniel, who are like older brothers to Tweetie. From time to time, Flip also appears, but he bears guilt on his shoulders and therefore isn’t a permanent resident of Patchwork House, but his obsession with Tweetie is unable to keep him at bay forever. Between these two, you feel constant push and pull. Although Flip is aware that he shouldn’t approach Tweetie, he can’t completely give her up. Tweetie in turn is confused and even though she doesn’t trust Flip or her own feelings, she can’t get rid of the incredible attraction she feels for the boy.

It's really hard for me to rate this book... Generally, I liked the plot of Skater Boy very much. The book, in my opinion, had a lot of potential, but it lacked something and I was a bit surprised by some explanations. I had the impression that the characters somehow made this a bigger deal than it was, when it comes to the whole "ruining Tweetie’s life”. Besides, blurb promises us bad boys and dirty things ... I don’t know if I had too high expectations, but unfortunately I found nothing dirty or bad here. Pity...

I have been a fan of Mary Catherine Gebhard since reading her dark mafia duet, Beast and Beauty. In this story we meet Tweetie and Flip and the rest of the misfit Rebel Gods of Patchwork House, where the rebels and runaways reign supreme. I thought this story had a unique premise set in the late 80's where skateboarding was prevalent and popular. The characters were engaging and provided a good stage for a YA romance between Tweetie and Flip.

In this story we see the back and forth romance of Flip and Tweetie when the girl that everyone has protected and loved as a kid returns all grown up. Tweetie was strong and sassy and the match to Flip's broody and intense flame. Their banter was fantastic and the comraderie between her and the boys was amazing.

But while I enjoyed the story I did find that the "notorious" bad boys of the Patchwork House didn't really seem bad at all but more misunderstood. There was a lot of telling vs showing which also frustrated me. I also found that the chemistry between Flip and Tweetie was lax and somewhat tame. This story is a NA romance but there was no combustible chemistry between them. I constantly hoped for moments where I could feel the character's closeness and more of a connection. But their romance seemed tepid at times and when there were somewhat sexy scenes they quickly faded to black. All in all while the story was engaging, there were a lot of instances where I hoped for more. Don't get me wrong - the writing was beautiful and the characters were compelling. I was just hoping for more. 3.5 stars! ~Ratula

I was intrigued from the start. The story sucked me in and I couldn’t stop reading until secrets were revealed.

This book is set in the past and follows Tweetie. She is a female skateboarder trying to make it pro in a male dominated world. She is also trying to find her true love who meets the requirements for her checklist.

Flip use to be the best in the world. That was until his world was turned upside down. Now he lives in the shadows making sure everyone is taken care of.

These two have a slow burn relationship that is prolonged by so many outside forces. They both love each other, but are too stubborn to be honest. Then with secrets being revealed and protective “older brothers,” this relationship almost seems impossible.

The dedication both of the characters have toward their sport and ultimately each other is unmatched. These two have sacrificed and experienced so much pain just to get their HEA.

I loved the setting of this book. Mary has created a word full of intrigue, revenge, and brotherhood. There is still so much mystery surrounding the other characters and that ending had my jaw hanging open! So excited to see what is going to happen next!

A Top Read for 2019!!! The story, the characters, the family they created delivered an absolutely unforgettable, utterly fantastic story!!! I cannot stop thinking about Tweetie and Flip!

A young girl left with nothing, found an uncoventional family. A bunch of social outcasts that cared for and made her a home. They made a life for her. They gave her a family. And ultimately they loved and protected her.

And then there was Flip. The skater boy that she never forgot. Their history is complicated. She may not have known he was there, but he was always part of her life in some way. The boy with so many secrets.

This story gave me all the feels. Talk about a slow burn...I almost went up in flames!!! The intensity between Tweetie and Flip was indescribable! They were written in the stars! Nothing could gave kept them apart.

Spectacular story telling with characters that will embed themselves in your heart! This series is incredible! I am already eagerly awaiting King, Romeo and Daniel’s stories. I WANT MORE!!! Read it!

4.5 Stars!

I really enjoyed this story! Mary is a new to me author and I was really excited to read this book, and it was so good! The love story of Flip and Tweetie is most definitely a unique one at that!

There are several twists and turns throughout this book and you switch back and forth between the past and the present, and both Flip and Tweetie’s POVs. It was nice to know what was going on in both of their heads and especially their lives, for during the times they were apart.

I also really loved the concept of the Patchwork House boys that acted as Tweetie’s guardians and cared for her, that warmed my heart!!

Overall, this was a really great book and I definitely recommend it!
