A trope I didn’t know I needed in my life! A slow burn but the storyline was perfect. I contemplated on DNF because it was slow but I’m so glad I persisted!! The love River and Everett have for each other is soo beautiful and feels as though it’s an everlasting sort of love!! And Everett’s want and need to be there for River... ugh my heart ❤️❤️ The James’ are such a beautiful family and I’m so happy with how they treated River, how Ollie really took her in under his wing and became the best big brother ever! And how River called Robert and Bridgette, Mum and dad with such confidence. The storyline is just so beautiful. A great read!

River, the girl whose never known love until the James adopt her. Instantly loving parents, a protective older brother, whose best friend is like another brother or is he more?

Everett, at times I loved him and others I wanted to knock some sense into him. An element that frustrated me endlessly was why he even stayed with Issy even during high school.

The two fight having a relationship as too much is at stake if it fails. But what if it doesn’t? It could be wonderful.

The characters have so much depth and the story is well developed. Highly recommend.

This book was so good, full of angst and two people so in love with each other you really cheer them on for a happy ending. I loved rivers development throughout the book and really felt for Everett and the situation he ended up in and the pressure he put on himself. Thought the name's were awesome and loved oliver . Cannot wait to read his story.

I was recommend this love story and I unexpectedly - really enjoyed it!!! I was lucky enough to read it through kindle unlimited.

This story follows River, a foster child who is adopted by a wealthy family. This is where she meets Everett, a boy who is 3 years older than her and her new step-brothers best friend. They connect from day one and spend the next decade fighting their feelings for each other, until the truth explodes in both their faces.

Yes it has cheating. But it’s not “omg how could they”. It is “there are two sides to every story” sort of cheating - and I didn’t mind that. The truth comes out and it’s raw, honest and was written correctly.

I really liked River. I felt connected to her and I was so sad when we find out the truth about her birth mum. But I also am grateful she has found a real family. Karma.

The ending was perfect, including the epilogue. And I’m now going on to read Charlie’s story in The Truth about Tomorrow.

Wow, this book was an emotional rollercoaster that I didn't want to step away from. Wonderfully written, B. Celeste's words and her story worked it's magic and captured my heart. I was totally invested in this book from the very first chapter.

River is thirteen years old when the story begins. A wonderful character to get to know, her pain was so deep, her vulnerability so raw. It was very easy to connect with River and get to know about her and the life she had led up to that moment.

Everett is the boy who captures her attention with his caring ways, his loyalty and friendship means everything to River but he was also so indecisive that at times he frustrated me beyond belief. Both have a story to tell, both have lost their way in life and are looking for the right path to follow. This story is told in duel perspective going back and forth in time, which helped to get to know each character to the fullest.

The subject matter in this book was very well written and although painful at times to read I did enjoy it very much. I also loved the way the author captured the family circle, how important it was and what a massive part it played in this story. There were many exceptional secondary characters which added to the joy of reading this book. Add in some angst, lots of secrets, and a smidgen of taboo and what you have here is a phenomenal story you won't want to miss. Just perfect !!!

After reading the synopsis and some reviews, and being in the mood for some real angst I was looking forward to this book.

It started out well, I grew to like River the 13 year old foster kid and Everett the older best friend of her adopted brother. I was not disappointed at first there was certainly plenty of angst, especially when Everett gets a girlfriend.

The years pass, and this is where the author lost me, it was all a bit dull. Everett turned put to be spineless a d dull and River became two dimensional and stagnant.

Sorry to say DNF at 76% I just couldn't take anymore. And was forcing myself to read it. Having read some spoilers I didn't miss much anyway.

    Shame

I was really disappointed in this book. I have been a foster parent and know a lot of other foster parents and I have never encountered a child that has gone through that much abuse be so well rounded.

I found it to be a very clunky book that lacked warmth.

I also really detested the ending. It didn't fit with the rest of the book and I felt it cheapened it :-(

I definitely read this book a while while back and I couldn’t really put my finger on how to come away with leaving a review.

River for me was this sweet an innocent girl with flaws was adopted, whereas Everett was this guy who was popular and friendly.

So, to not drag it out I think by rereading this book showed me different sides to River and Everett and their connections. Every moment of their POVs have me wondering what will happen next and yes while Everett (who was in a relationship) should have known better to never cross that line, I wondered why he even stayed with Issy.

I do have to say that if you want a book not about cheating this one is not for you, but go in blind to know, regardless.

"The truth about heartbreak is that there is no such thing. It's your soul that shatters, along with every fiber of your being that screams for another person."

I don't really like to give away too much in my reviews other than how the book made me feel - and this one gave me all the feels. I was lucky enough to get my hands on an early copy of The Truth about Heartbreak and it is so far one of my top reads for 2019. I'm pretty open in my FB groups about infidelity being one of my favorite tropes and I always have my ear to the ground looking for my next fix. I love all the angst that goes along with it - the push and pull of characters and how it makes my heart plummet one moment and sing the next.

The Truth about Heartbreak gave me that and so much more. The story was beautifully told and I fell in love with both River and Everett immediately. A young crush, misplaced loyalty and heartbreak. River's backstory is so sad - the reader is given enough to paint a picture that makes your heart cry for her. And Everett - I loved his loyalty, even though it ended up hurting him and those around him time and again. You never really know what's going on until you get both sides. Being told from dual point of view (MY FAVORITE!!!) allows you to see that there is so much more going on then what you see on the surface.

The side characters were awesome - while playing an important roll in the overall story, they didn't take away from the main characters at all. It contained two epilogue's, and after reading the second one I'm really hoping that there will be another story....PLEASE let there be another one!!!

Ms. Celeste is a new author to me and someone I will definitely be keeping my eye on! Thank you for such an emotional ride and hopefully I will be reading book two soon :)

I'm back to reading and reviewing after a short break and this book proved to be a good choice. It's wholesome and has all the elements that make for an entertaining read without going overboard.
What stood out to me most was how well crafted the characters are. Their is a good development curve for all of them especially River and Everett. And the best part is the even the secondary characters are handled very well and play an active role in pushing the story forward. Overall, i would prefer describing it as story of growing up and finding oneself more than a romance with touch of forbidden. I liked how delicately it handled River's past in the foster system and the focus on her new family - Robert and Bridgette and Oliver. The emphasis on family and friends was portrayed and beautiful, but where it faltered was in the 'love story'. I wish their love story was fleshed out as much as the individual characters and their backstories. With River i could still understand, but i couldn't quite grasp how and when Everett starred liking her. Except the both of them having a good understanding and respecting each other for their pasts, i didn't see much of their chemestry. Also I felt, the author was holding back from getting too much into the 'cheating' aspect and just grazed it. I would be more invested if she could dig deeper into it. Considering it's her first book, the hesitation is understandable. This book definitely wasn't boring. There was a lot happening but didn't drag out much and there was no over the top drama. I am definitely jumping into the next book ;)..

This book was unreal. I'd heard of people talking about it but thought it was one of those vanilla romances where boy meets girl and they fall in love. Boy was I wrong!! I'm so glad I decided to pick this up! I fell in love with Everett the moment he was introduced and he is the perfect book boyfriend! River is sweet and watching her grow throughout the book while still keeping little pieces of her old self was great! These two are PERFECT!

God i was so ready for a decent book not full of a shallow basis and immature characters and this was it. Such a good premise, such good characters and the pacing was really on point for the past and present. I'd say my only issue and the reason for 4 stars was the fact that I just didn't get why Everett stayed with issy in the first place when she already had these traits. He clearly didn't want to settle down anyway, even though there was the 'promise' after some time, which I understood, he finally had obviously come to the decision to go for river, despite this promise, yet let her dad reel him back in like he didn't have a choice so I didnt see the need for that if a couple weekslater he was guna end it anyway. Despite this I was fully drawn to this tale. I almost lost it at river for not saying what I was thinking at a certain point which was letting their situation down but then there's a scene where she tells him exactly how it comes across he's acting and I could t have been happier she out herself first. I don't want to spoil too much so that's all the detail il go into but I will say I'm not usually into what the synopsis may come across as a triangle but it really doesn't play out that way so give it a shot. I loved her family and her quiet strength and think it was portrayed in a perfect balance to her character.
