Beautifully Broken Pieces is book one of the Sutter Lake series by Catherine Cowles. This is my second book by Catherine. I first read Further To Fall and fell in love with it. With all the love I had for the first book, though, I think I loved this one even more!

Taylor Lawson is best friends with Carter whom we met in Further To Fall. Taylor has spent the last two years in Texas caring for her sick mother. It’s been three months now since her mother has passed. Taylor has given everything in the last two years and now all she has is the pain of loss. Carter and her husband Austin and their friend Liam decide that what Taylor needs is a vacation. So they all head off to the cozy Oregon town of Sutter Lake.

Taylor loves her friends but she is tired of the way they look at her, at the way they worry about saying the wrong thing. She just wants to be alone. Because if you are alone, if you isolate yourself away from others, then you can’t feel loss if you lose them like she did her mother. She falls in love with this wonderful small town. She feels more peaceful here than she has in a long time and decides she wants to stay for a year.

Walker Cole is the Deputy Chief of police in Sutter Lake. His family owns a huge ranch and it’s on his family’s property that Taylor rents a small cottage. The first time he sees her he’s intrigued. Walker has suffered loss himself. It’s been ten years but he never completely got over his loss. But, there is something about this woman he just met that gets under his skin and wakes him up in a way he hasn’t felt in a long time.

“Taylor Lawson was fire and ice. And the combination had intrigued me from the moment I met her.”

The entire Cole family sort of adopts Taylor but she still tries to keep herself at a distance. Where Taylor used to despise exercise, she now runs or swims like her life depends on it. As far as she’s concerned, it does. It’s the only time she feels peace! Walker has decided that he wants to get to know her better, that he can’t ignore his growing feelings for her but he knows he is going to have to go slow or he’ll scare her away.

“I don’t have my guard up.”
“Oh honey, your guard is up so high, you can’t even see over it. But, maybe one of these days, you’ll lower it enough to see that letting people really know you isn’t the worst thing.”

beautifully broken pieces catherine cowles

While Taylor and Walker are trying to find their way to one another, their little town is shaken up by the disappearance and murder of local women. Walker is torn between feeling the happiest he’s felt in his life when he’s with Taylor and at the same time, dealing with the gruesome facts his job forces him to face.

“You are here for me. You made me smile on a day when I thought that would be impossible. And when I feel your body next to mine, my soul settles somehow. I feel at peace. So, you are here for me in every way I need.”

I’ll stop here because you need to find the rest out for yourself, because this is an amazing book and you just HAVE to read it! I loved getting to spend some time with Austin and Carter from Further To Fall. There is a new character in this book that I am already pretty much in love with, Tucker, Walker’s best friend. I’m told I might be seeing him in a future book and I can’t wait. The next book, though, will be Liam’s book, Beautifully Broken Life. I am so excited to get his story. But, back to this book, I loved Taylor’s journey as she dealt with her grief and with the progression of her feelings for Walker. I too lost my mom a few years ago after a lengthy illness. And while I dealt with my feelings in a different way, I do understand her grief. This was sweet and sexy but I wasn’t prepared for how suspenseful it was! I was on the edge of my seat. The epilogue was perfect and left me with a huge smile.

You're mine. I'm yours.

I hope that somehow I have convinced you to give this book a try, because I loved it so much. Catherine Cowles has quickly become the author that is an automatic yes for me. Maybe you will feel the same way!

➳An emotional gravitating romance that will compel to wanting to read every single page, Catherine Cowles knows how to ideally write a romance filled with action, mystery, and most of all passion...

➳As an official avid reader of Catherine's writing, I want to say and shout to the Goodreads, Instagram, to all the bloggers out there, anyone really whom is reading this right this moment that... YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS OUT ON ANY OF HER BOOKS!

➳And why is that you may ask? I mean, after all because of her debut novel Further to Fall, there should not be on single cell on your body that should reject her writing. Though it is an angst romance and anyone whom follows my reviews knows that I am not the biggest fan of angst-y stories, I will never break down to reject any of her books.

➳Taylor and Walker, the two main characters of this compelling masterpiece, bring to the reader a new ambience of falling in love with nature and having a deeper meaning when it comes down to insta-feels.

➳Just like insta-love romances that are my ultimate weakness, Catherine was able to bring two people whom have so many deep down, wall guarded dark emotions that cannot be opened. When Taylor and Walker meet however, the chemistry that you find between these two is one that you cannot deny will spark your interest in wanting to read more of their love story. After loosing almost everyone whom she shared a close proximity of emotions with, Taylor finds herself in a small town out of LA and Houston in which she instantly falls head over heels with. When coming across a tea shop wanting a cashier and waitress for hire, Taylor finds her first friend in that small town, whom was able to give her a place to stay as well. Little do we know until we finally meet him, Walker is said friend's older brother. When he hears about her, all he can think about is how Jensen (his sister) likes to bring strays to the house all the time and to help her out. But the moment Walker meets Taylor in person, the attraction is present and the reader can never deny that and the beauty about these two is that their slow burn to finally being with each other, is by far one that is realistic to the eye of the reader and also one that you will emotionally fall for.

➳Overall, Catherine has not disappointed me with any of her novels, and I promise you that she will not disappoint you either. Recommendations after recommendations, Catherine is the one author that I wish the best of, every single one of her books should be highly praised by every romance lover, and you cannot pass out on this novel. Thank you to Catherine for letting me adore her novels, they officially have a special place in my heart.

➳ARC kindly provided by Catherine, in exchange for an honest review...

TW for loss of a loved one

3.5 stars

This was cute! Taylor is grieving the loss of her mom, so she goes to a small town for peace. She decides to stay, despite the disapproval of her friends. There, so meets Walker, who has his own haunted past, and Walker can't seem to stay away from her. I didn't really love Walker, so that's why I wasn't completely sold on this story. He was the town sheriff and there were women going missing, but he didn't seem to really put a lot of focus and attention on that until it was someone he really cared about. That did add some suspense at the end, but I didn't get why there wasn't any urgency from him when people he knew were going missing. Because I didn't love him, I didn't really care as much as I wanted to about the romance. I think the suspense helped move the plot along at the end, but I wasn't 100% in for the romance. I am intrigued enough, though, to pick up book two and read Tessa's story!

Overall Opinion: It's no secret that I've been struggling this year to be inspired by any of the books that are in my kindle. I happened to get an email that I received this book through my local library on loan after spending too much time searching through my tbr/sample list, and I took it as a sign that I should just jump right in. I lost my mother ~10 years ago after a short battle with an aggressive cancer, so I wasn't quite sure how I was going to feel about this one. I felt like it could go 2 ways and be that it, hopefully, tapped into my emotions and made me connect to the character -- or it could be too close to home and too painful to read. Sadly, it was neither. While I absolutely sympathized with losing your best friend and mother in one go, I got rather annoyed with the h and her behavior. I also understood seeking solitude and not wanting to get hurt, but she was just too OTT in it all for my liking and I never felt like I connected with her. I also struggled with the ending feeling too abrupt with just a half-a epilogue. The author offers a extended scene to the epilogue if you subscribe to her newsletter, but it still didn't feel like enough to me! The suspense was pretty good, the heat was pretty good, and I liked the H -- so, there is that! I imagine many people will really enjoy this, and I might be interested in the next books in the series, because I did enjoy the side characters.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Taylor and Walker's story. Taylor is grieving the loss of her mother and her friends convince her to go on a group vacation in Sutter Lake. She finds she love the peacefulness of the place and the anonymity of being a stranger so much she decides to stay. She soon meets Walker, who's parents own the house she's renting and sister owns the shop she's working at. The sparks fly, but there are some obstacles in their way. Meanwhile, Walker is the Deputy Chief of the local police force and he is dealing with a string of missing persons and a possible serial killer. There are a few funny moments, some sexy times, and some suspenseful scenes...and they get a HFN ending.

POV: This alternated between Taylor and Walker's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good except for the ending (see overall opinion and closure sections). I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well otherwise.

Instalove: No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings.

H rating: 4 stars. Walker. I liked him. He was a good combination of sweet, sexy, and alpha.

h rating: 2 stars. Taylor. I struggled a lot with her. I'll start with saying that absolutely understand that everyone grieves in their own way, I just personally struggled with the way she was ott in her "walls" and pushing away. I felt like I was rolling my eyes a little too much with her tbh.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW/OM drama: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Yes

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This didn't have nearly enough closure for me. While the author does offer an extended epilogue scene (that was admittedly cute --but still not enough for me), you have to sign up for her newsletter to get it. I do recognize that it is probably a very effective way to get more readers, but I just find it frustrating to have to sign up to (potentially) get the amount of closure I seek in my books. The ending that is in the book I would classify as a HFN ending .

Safety: This one should be either Safe or Safe with exception for most safety gang readers depending on personal preferences.

#1 beautifully broken pieces — 3 stars
#2 beautifully broken life — 2.5 stars
#3 beautifully broken spirit — 3.75 stars
#4 beautifully broken control — 3 stars

i wouldve probably given this four stars had the author not used this line too many times. seriously, it's so overused it's become one of my pet peeves!!

"he/she released a breath, he/she didnt know he/she was holding."

the suspense aspect of the story was schematic. this was my first time reading a book by this author so idk if writing suspense romance is truly her 'specialty'.

but looking at this book it doesnt seem like it. i wish i could say i didnt see the plot twist coming, but i totally guessed the culprit before the subject was even brought up.

i really appreciate her incorporating 'suspense' into the story though bcs it did make the plot more intriguing for me to read. and overall, im just really a sucker for small town romances.

This one was one of those "It's not you, it's me" type of reads. I know better then to attempt anything that has a dead ex trope, but seeing that my friends raved about it, I thought I'd give it a try.
However, for me it was a DNF because

Having suffered a loss that has turned her life upside down, Taylor finds herself needing a new place not marked by what she no longer has, somewhere she can just be, and doesn't have to see the concern and sympathy her friends are unable to conceal. She's determined to keep her distance and not make any new bonds that would lead to the risk of suffering more heartache. Moving to Sutter Lake for at least a year, what she doesn't expect is the heat and sparks she feels with Walker Cole, who is the Deputy Chief of police in Sutter Lake. Walker having lost his first love years ago, doesn't think he'll ever be in a space for anything serious, but when he crosses paths with Taylor, he is unable to keep away. She gets under his skin, heats his blood, and has him hoping for a future he thought lost to him.

Walker's family especially his gran were fab in this, and added a wonderful layer to the tale, as did Taylor's friends.

As they begin to let their walls down, and build a relationship that is lovely to watch, danger gets closer and closer to Taylor - someone isn't happy about her relationship with Walker, and someone else is keen to hunt her.

Delightfully surprised by the book and the main characters, found myself drawn in and lost in the pages of the story! See myself re-reading this more than once.

Yes! I've found a new favorite author. I feel like I've been struggling to connect with some of the books I've picked up lately and it's such a relief to find one that just pulled me in from the start. There's so much depth to Taylor and Walker and I teared up a few times reading this. Plus the cast of secondary characters are wonderful and I'm so looking forward to making my way through this series.

If you love emotional romances with great character development, sizzling chemistry and suspense too, then I highly recommend this book!

This is what I look for when I say I like the genre, which is New Adult. Not the overly sappy, long winded unnecessary sec scenes but the one that showcase the gradual falling of the couple, without those who useless drama.

This story as mentioned before had all the factors that could be considered a strong novel. From strong main characters, solid plotlines, supportive family without the simply stupid drama to add to it, this novel isn’t lacking much compared to the vast field full of novels just as this. Yet, although I call it a novel among an endless other novels of the same genre, this novel stands out with the solidness in the story. To the somewhat none repetitive nature of the characters some NA characters do might slightly annoy you but when you get over that, you can clearly see that this novel is a gem among its contemporaries.

Don’t let the less number of ratings dissuade anyone from reading this book because it is worth your time. Now I need to find way to get them other three down for me to devour them completely.

Wow! What an absolutely beautiful story! This touched my soul to the point that my heart hurt, grieved, broke and was healed all within the pages of this book!

Taylor is drowning in the care and concern her friends wrap around her. After a great personal loss, she just wants to be alone. Her heart hurts and she is living a life of fear. Moving to Sutter Lake is the perfect solution. Until a local cop begins to worm his way in and she comes face to face with those fears.

description

Walker has experienced his own loss, one that pushed him into the job he now performs. When he meets Taylor he recognizes the look in her eyes and sets out to help allieviate the pain she carries. But he’s got a hard row to hoe to get there because Taylor isn’t letting anyone in and it’s going to take a lot of patience and persistence to get through to her.

description

I loved how caring Walker was with Taylor. He knew just when to push and when to pull back. This has the feel of a slow burn but there is no denying the sizzling chemistry between these two. With the careful integration of his family into Taylor’s life she begins to open up to the possibilities of more.

description

Just as things start to really get going with this couple, things take a decidedly nasty turn and they are not only at odds with one another but both their lives are in danger at one point or another. The mystery and suspense was intense and completely believable. I thought I knew who the villain was but was totally taken by surprise not once but twice. I love when that happens.

This has a nice pace to it, and I never skimmed. Secondary characters are wonderful and some I imagine already have their book while others I hope we will see more of. I enjoyed the heck out of this book and I look forward to reading more by this author.

“I’m broken, Walker.”
“Well, then all your beautifully broken pieces are mine.”

Plot overview:
Taylor lost her mother 3 months ago and her best friends decide to whisk her away to an out of the way, peaceful community to help her regroup. Takes place in a small town in Oregon. Told from dual POV.

Characters:
Taylor - teacher
Taylor has spent the last few years in Texas caring for her sick mother. She was extremely close to her mother and feels very lost and alone without her. Although she has some close friends, her mother was her only family.

Walker - cop
Walker has lived in Sutter Lake all his life. He is surrounded by a very loving family and his closest friend Tuck. Walker has also suffered grief in his life as he lost his longtime girlfriend years ago. Her loss has haunted him and he’s never fully been able to get closure as there are some questions around what really happened to her.
”Almost a decade had passed since the spring I’d lost Julie. Since she was taken from me. I still held out hope that a clue would appear or a witness would come forward. I went through the case file every year on the anniversary of her death, hoping that something would jump out at me that I hadn’t noticed before. It never did.”

My Thoughts
I think the emotional aspect of this book will hit people differently. Taylor’s coping mechanism after the loss of her mother is to push everyone away. So if you have lost a loved one and had a different coping mechanism, you may get frustrated by Taylor’s actions/thoughts and this frustration may prevent you from really getting sucked in to the story emotionally.

There are many times where Taylor gets overwhelmed with the little day to day things that remind her of her mom. Dealing with a recent loss that has been so crushing for her, it’s understandable how certain things can be a trigger and reduce her to a blubbering mess. When grief is fresh and new, any little thing can be a reminder of what you no longer have on this earth.

However, her need to push everyone away, because “everyone always leaves anyway” did aggravate me. I was so glad when Liam gave her a piece of his mind.
“This past year, you’ve been a crap friend. I get it. You’ve been through something horrible. And in relationships, we all have times where we take more than we give. It’s natural. But it can’t go on forever. Get your head out of your ass and realize you’re not the only one dealing with shit before you lose the only people you have left.”
Right on dude!!! 🤗 I can’t wait for Liam’s story...I’m already swooning over him ❤️

The Cole family tries to come around her and offer support and I absolutely loved every member of this family. They are such a close family and they just warmed my heart. Grandma Irma and little Noah are too cute.
“Irma clucked her tongue at her grandson. “You know I’m a little bit psychic.”
Walker shook his head. “You are not. Predicting that our town’s little league team would win the state championship doesn’t make you psychic.”

“I told you, he’s too young.”
That was the wrong thing to say. Noah’s face turned the shade of a ripening tomato. “I am not. I’m a big boy. You say so all the time. And the boys gotta hang. Right, Uncle Walker?”

So cute 😍

When Taylor gets to town, everyone tells her how safe the town is - you don’t even need to lock your doors. I grew up in a town like that, so I get that comment. However, I was s little thrown by the fact that apparently this safe little town has a killer amongst them. 😳 That doesn’t sound very safe to me. 🤔

I will say that the reveal of the killer took me by surprise. I actually had somebody else in mind, and I’m glad it didn’t turn out to be who I thought it was because that would have just really ticked me off. So thankfully the killer was a “good” surprise. The additional little twist after the killer reveal was also something that took me by surprise. I’m not often surprised in books, so I did enjoy these unexpected twists.

The ending felt a little rushed. The suspense side of this story is that a couple of missing girls have turned up dead. This comes to a head around the 85% mark and is resolved and wrapped up by 90%. There is another twist that happens after, but the culmination of the suspense portion just seemed rushed. Even the explanation given of “why” was vague. There is some deep rooted psychosis here and I didn’t have a full appreciation of what drove this behavior. I think I just needed a little more character depth for the killer to buy into the fact they were so twisted on the inside.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable read for me. My heart broke for Taylor as I certainly could relate to losing a mother. However, I just couldn’t relate to the way Taylor pushed people away. So, her character was a little so, so for me. However, I loved all the other characters in the book. And, Walker....yum, yum❣️🥰

This book has a mix of different emotions and I believe you will be able to find something that resonates with you. The book flowed well, the writing was great and the story highly entertaining. I didn’t skip a single page (which is pretty uncommon for me). I enjoyed this book and will definitely be reading book 2 when it becomes available.

Quotes:
“I’ll get a job and meet some people that way. Then you won’t have to worry.”
“Where? At the local hardware store because you have such a way with power tools?”

“One day, you won’t cry because of what you’ve lost, you’ll smile because of what you had.”

“You snuck in and stole my goddamned heart, but I hope you never give it back”

“Did you just knock her out with a bedpan?”
Liam grinned. “It seemed only fair. Her brother cracked my skull open with a skillet”

I really try to like Beautifully Broken Pieces more than 3 stars. I really am. At the end, I just can give this book 3 stars.
The reason is the unusual obsession from Taylor toward her dead mom. It does not makes sense and Miss Cowles, sadly does not provide background story.

Other thing is Walker. Miss Cowles uses telling and not enough showing fro Walker character. So Walker at the end is a aloof, detached hero. Instead of fierce, broody and protector. His attitude toward Julie's death is cold and indifference. Julie is suppose to be his first love.

Anyway, the whole suspense is not bad. It blends nicely with the romance.
Overall, OK read.

tw: loss of a loved one

ugh dead ex trope how I hate you
but I didn't take that as a factor in my rating

what pissed me off:

* I just can't stand when a character in this case heroine knows there is a killer on the loose but she puts herself in danger because she has to run alone

* hero is mourning his one true love the girlfriend who is dead, dating another girl but suddenly lusting after heroine because she got that something

* she goes to his current girlfriend funeral ( yes, she gets killed in the meantime, so convenient, they did break up a little before that)

* final twist with the crazy ex-girlfriend

overall, not emotional as it should be considering that heroine is dealing with the loss of a mother..
I just find her annoying

but this was my first read by this author I will try some of her other books

The Cole Family was one loving and wonderful bunch of people. I could easily understand Taylor having difficulty resisting them especially Walker. I enjoyed Beautifully Broken Pieces because of the family dynamics and their interactions with Taylor. Walker and Taylor was a great couple. Lovely bantering and chemistry. Taylor dealing with the loss of her mother wasn’t easy but thankfully the Cole Family was there trying to break down her walls. Taylor and Walker’s little sister Jensen developed a friendship and the mysterious Tessa caught my eye as well. Walker could vent to his womanizing buddy Tuck, and I have feeling I know who will be his match. Can’t wait to find out. So what made me struggle a little was the plot which came off as tedious. If it would have been solved sooner the pace of the story would have flowed better. Despite that I enjoyed this first book of The Sutter Lake series and can’t wait to read Tessa’s book.

I want you. You’re mine, remember?”
“I’m broken, Walker.”
“Well, then all your beautifully broken pieces are mine.

Beautifully Broken Pieces is an emotional romantic suspense story by Catherine Cowles, set in the small town of Sutter Lake. This is my second book by Catherine, and I continue to be amazed by her ability to craft engaging and captivating romances about two heartbroken characters who find solace and home in each other.

I had high expectations for this book, and while it was enjoyable, I felt that the characters’ personalities fell flat. I loved Taylor and Walker together, but as individuals, they weren’t as intriguing as I had hoped. I wanted to see more depth beyond their tragic pasts, but their present was entirely shaped and analyzed through the lens of their pain and grief. Both Taylor and Walker are mourning the loss of loved ones and blaming themselves for it, which becomes the foundation of their connection.

“She needed someone who would never leave her. I could be that. I would be her friend, her constant shadow, her shoulder to cry on for as long as she wanted me. I would be more if she let me.”

Taylor and Walker are both grieving the loss of their loved ones, carrying the heavy burden of guilt and self-blame. When Walker meets Taylor and recognizes the pain she’s trying to hide, he decides to be there for her—because he knows all too well what it means to feel lost in grief and agony. With patience and understanding, he helps her move forward, encouraging her to forgive herself. He never rushes her, simply waiting for her to open up when she’s ready. His love for her, in all her brokenness, is unwavering. Watching them fall in love, piece by piece, while helping each other heal. It was truly precious.

“You know I love you, right?” She froze.
“I know.” The words sounded so unbelievably tortured.
“To the depths of my soul. I’ll give you time, but don’t think I’m letting you walk out of my life so easily.”

The romance was tender, sweet, and emotional, and I enjoyed every aspect of it. Their healthy communication made their relationship even better, though I was initially bothered by the insta-lust/love trope. However, their relationship development was slow and steady, which balanced things out. I especially loved how Walker’s family embraced Taylor, never pressuring her but instead allowing her to accept their love and care at her own pace. The found family aspect was beautifully written.

The suspense element kept me hooked, but the identity of the real suspect was way too obvious—I called it from the start. The extra drama toward the end felt unnecessary, though the final moments were adorable. Thankfully, there was no third-act breakup, which was a relief.

Beautifully Broken Pieces is a solid start to the Sutter Lake series, and I’m excited to meet the other couples and characters in the upcoming books!

(Spoilers)

This was a “its not you, its me”’kinda book, everyone keeps crying. And i like books which makes me cry but my reaction to this one was like 😪😪😪. Taylor is strong but yet so annoying, and it seems like every girl is after Walker. The beginning was good but towards the end it got really boring, Taylor keeps landing herself in trouble and her “stubbornness” isnt really her being strong, rather being immature. The story is about a girl Taylor who recently lost her mother, she starts a new life in a small town where she meets Walker who is a cop and they fall in love. Taylor has trust issues and doesn’t let anyone in, it can relate to that and understand some of her reactions but at the end, the break up was totally unnecessary, stupid and seemed forced. She got really annoying, and Walker on the other hand ..... i really dont know, i am confused about him cuz he has a gf whom he is not serious about, he has an ex whom he used to love, and when he sees taylor he is attracted to her and i am like 😐😐😐. Their relationship took slow yet fast, it was kinda boring and there was chemistry but i didnt see the emotional bonding, even that seemed forced. There is a serial killer kinda, ppl have gone missing when they go hiking so Walker wants Taylor not to go running alone but she is stubborn and risks her life. I mean, tbh he could have just warned her about the killer or the bodies they have found. It was just stupid not to tell her but want her not to go running by herself, he could have just told her rather than stretching this one topic through out the book. Overall, both of them annoyed me A LOT. I read the second book which is about tessa and she ran away from an abusive relationship but she is so much more mature and stronger than Taylor. She makes sensible decisions but Taylor keeps running away from her problems and i really dont like characters like that who keeps running away. 🙄🙄🙄

Wow this book was one I didn't want to put down! This was the first book I have read from Catherine Cowles but it definitely won't be my last. The chemistry between Walker and Taylor was simply amazing and so was the story line! I was hanging on by the edge of my seat! Such beautiful writing and I can't wait to read more of this series!

"I love you. You snuck in and stole my goddamned heart, but I hope you never give it back. Please give me the chance to love you."

Another entertaining read from CC, but I feel like it was more predictable than others have been, and I wasn't super sold on the MC's, mostly Taylor.

Walker was a pretty good MMC, but there were just certain times where his reactions or some of the things he said were just meh. But he was still a great guy and swoon worthy.

I had a harder time with Taylor, but I've never subscribed to the whole I Can't Get Close to People so I Don't Get Hurt storyline. I totally get the hard time she was having, but she wasn't that great of a love interest and someone deserving of the main character spot.

But still love these types of stories. Always entertaining and easy reads for me 💚

"I want you. You're mine remember."
"I'm broken Walker."
"Well, then all your beautifully broken pieces are mine."

Wow! Wow! Wow! I'm so pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this book. This is my first book by this author and I was immediately drawn in by the blurb but I never imagined I would have had such an incredible experience with this story.

I am a huge fan of small town romances and this was just PERFECTION! Both the heroe and heroine have lost someone close to them and Taylor especially is hurting immensely. She carries around her grief and it's like a weight that keeps her down. She separates herself from everyone to keep her heart safe.

Enter Walker and the Cole family who infiltrate Taylor's life and she slowly allows her walls to fall and let them in. I love the small town way of life. People looking out for their neighbors and the sense of community and belonging.

Walker is immediately protective of Taylor and has a need to keep her safe. This local police officer, soon to be chief was sexy, with a confident persona but also tender and loving and not afraid to express his feelings for Taylor. Gah! I SWOONED SO HARD! I just love a man in uniform who is not afraid to show his emotional side!

There is quite a bit of mystery and suspense in this book that had me turning the pages like crazy to try and solve the case of a killer amidst the town. The story was riveting and unputdownable! I was completely intrigued! And wow, that ending! I was completely shocked! I did not see it coming.

I FELL SO IN LOVE with this author's writing. Sometimes there are great authors who write average books and average authors may even write great books. This was an amazing author who wrote an amazing book. I cannot recommend this book enough! Top recommendation!

I am torn between 3.5 and 4 stars here. It was very well written and very readable...but I found the heroine to be a bit whiny (man, I'm a cold bitch sometimes!!!) I'll go with 4 stars to make up for that fact!

This is the story of Taylor, who has recently lost her mother, and it has hit her very hard. To the point where she has retreated into herself and tried to shut herself off from letting anyone in. She just wants to be alone. Her friends take her to Sutter Lake, a place that is special to her best friend. Taylor likes it there a lot, and it's the perfect place for her to be alone and try to heal. But, of course, life has different plans, and puts Walker Cole in her path. He's definitely swoony. Kind, gentle, thoughtful, and it sure doesn't hurt that he's tall, handsome, strong and he's a local cop. He's been through a horrific loss himself years ago, so he recognizes the signs in Taylor. And he's committed to being there for her and breaking down her walls, even if it's only as a friend. He really is perfection!!!!!! (notice all them exclamation points) His family is amazing too. Throw in a little mystery, because girls are going missing, which harkens back to Walker's aforementioned loss. The mystery aspect isn't huge, but it does play into the storyline. To me, this is heavy on romance, light on mystery.

I struggled a bit with how Taylor was wallowing in the loss of her mother. Yeah, I get it. It is a very sad and there is a grief process, and everyone grieves in their own way and in their own time. But halfway through the book I wanted to scream at here and say "Get over it. You are not the first person to lose a parent. We know you are sad and you should be, but to just shut down and throw up walls because you don't want to risk the pain of losing someone...Get over your damn self!!!" (See...cold hearted bitch!!) And eventually one of her friends eventually kind of said those things to her. I think he told her to get her head out of her arse, but "tomato...tomahto"!!

All in all, if you like a good romance with a swoony guy, and smidge of mystery thrown in, jump on this one!

Taylor Lawson gave up everything to care for her mother. She passed and its been a couple months and she is barely functioning so her friends take her for a 'vacation' to Sutter Lake. A quaint little town. While there she falls in love with the town and soon decides she needs to move there. To find herself. Find what she wants, needs to move on. To be whole.

Walker Cole is a town sheriff's deputy. He is a townie, his family owns a huge ranch. Still fighting demons from a decade ago, losing his 1st love, he is shocked when Taylor sparks something in him. Through fate she ends up renting a small cottage on his parents ranch and they all fall in love with her. The two grow closer, he knocks down her walls, she makes him wonder if he can love again. Fully.

But....people are going missing. Bodies being found. When she goes missing will it be history repeating itself or will he be able to right a wrong of his past?

This is my first book of this author and not my last. I just purchased Further To Fall her 1st release.

The first book in Catherine's The Sutter Lake series, this is a surprisingly emotional, beautifully romantic second-chance love story with great chemistry and lots of swoon and suspense. I loved it!

Taylor Lawson's move to Sutter Lake, Oregon was one of both desire and necessity after the passing of her mother. This was to be a fresh start for her, even if it's only meant to be for a year. Twelve months of solitude would bring her the peace of mind she desperately needs. The home she rents is located on property owned by the Cole family, and they're more than welcoming, but she still maintains her distance, more so with the town's handsome and rugged deputy sheriff, Walker Cole.

"Taylor Lawson was fire and ice. And the combination had intrigued me from the moment I met her."

Like Taylor, Walker knows what devastating loss feels like, but after ten years, she's the first woman who stirs within him. Feelings he never thought would come to life again. Walker has decided that he wants to get to know her better, that he can’t ignore his growing feelings for her but he knows he is going to have to go slow or she'll run away from him.

"I don't have my guard up."
"Oh honey, your guard is up so high, you can't see over it. But, maybe one of these days, you'll lower it enough to see that letting people really know you isn't the worst thing."

There’s a very obvious attraction between Taylor and Walker, but with all that Taylor is dealing with, they’re not in a position to go diving into exploring all that they are feeling. So instead we get this slow-developing emotional connection that is beautiful to watch. The sexual tension is definitely there, but it’s alongside something so much more that is real and organic, and it unfolds beautifully.

" I'm broken, Walker."
"Well, then all your beautifully broken pieces are mine."

There’s a mystery element to the story as we don’t know who is after Taylor or why, and that adds a great sense of suspense to the story, as does the way that Walker deals with it all. We learn more as the story progresses, and I was captivated as it all unfolded.

"You are here for me. You made me smile on a day when I thought that would be impossible. And when I feel your body next to mine, my sould settles somehow. I feel at peace. So, you are here for me in every way I need."

This was super cute and fast paced. Reminded me a lot of Devney Perry’s books with the small mountain town setting and the hints of suspense. Both main characters have lots of issues they’re dealing with and there’s a lot of push pull and resistance before they give it up and get together. The audiobook is pretty solid as well. This is my favorite Catherine Cowles book but it probably won’t be my last!
