Like A Hurricane #1

Wrecked by Her

Loving Jules in high school was easy—gentle and natural. But that was eight years ago, before she left town. Before she took off and left my heart shattered.

Now she’s back…with a kid I’ve never met.

A hurricane, that’s what she is—powerful and potentially destructive, yet so thrilling and intense.

If she leaves me wrecked again…I won’t survive.

Wrecked by Her is the first book in the Like a Hurricane Duet and Kristie Leigh's debut novel.
A heart breaking story of a single mom and her second chance at love. Beautifully written Kristie takes you on a journey of friendship, motherhood, heartbreak and love.

Hunter and Jules were high school sweethearts until Jules left for College, eight years later she is back in town with a toddler in tow. The two pick up their freindship right where they left off but circumstances keep preventing them to rekindle anythiing romantically. Jules really got my goat, I wanted to shake her at times, my heart broke for Hunter, the name says it all she really does wreck him.
The story started off a little slow but once it did get going I was invested.
The book ends on cliffhanger so now, I can't wait to read the next book and see how this story ends.

For a debut novel/duet Kristie has hit this start out of the park!! Jules and Hunter were high school sweethearts until Jules moves away to pursue her dreams. When she is called back to town Jules has to confront things that were not said when she left. Hunter remained in town and gets the chance to reconnect with Jules. There is a bunch of heartache, things not said, and revelations in this first half of the Like a Hurricane Duet. I can't wait to get some answers in the conclusion of this duet.

This specific video review will be included in the August 2019 wrap-up.

A debut novel and part one of a duet that sucked me and left me craving more. A second chance romance with a good story and excellent character development that left me craving the second part of this duet.

infuriating story

I don't understand the reason for most of the FMC decisions. It's not just that the entire story is infuriating, but we get no real explanation why she left her home town, stayed away for 8 years, has a son with someone else, and why she refuses to be with the man she claims to love (and he loves her too).
I needed reasons for all the angst, but we get nothing at all.
The entire story is disappointing, and infuriating too. Are we supposed to fill in the gaps without being given any clues????

Wrecked By Her & Saved By Him (The Like A Hurricane Duet) by Kristie Leigh
Contemporary Romance Duet
The Like a Hurricane Duet (Wrecked by Her and Saved by Him) are the debut novel(s) for Kristie Leigh. The emotional duet, despite being a super-slow burn second chance romance, kept me up reading late into the night with a box of tissues at my side.

Jules and Hunter grew up together and became high school sweethearts who were very much in love. Eight years ago she left town to go to college without saying goodbye to Hunter and she never returned.
“I couldn’t believe she was really gone. My Jules was gone.”

When her mother got sick she was called back home. She brought with her the most adorable 2-year-old son whose father was not in the picture. Callum stole the book a bit for me. Kristie wrote the most adorable little boy! Hunter pined away for Jules for the eight years she was gone, so when she got back Hunter was doing anything to make sure she stays, even if it meant just being a friend.
“No matter how hard I tried, being around her but not with her shredded me. I couldn’t be normal when everything about me was broken.”

Hunter, sigh….he is so sweet, but I sometimes wanted to smack him upside the head and call him a wuss. He kept being the perfect friend while desperate for more.
“I’m right here with you, and I’m not leaving. Lean on me, and I promise to never let you fall.” He kissed my forehead and let it linger.

But by 84% of the first book they are still just friends!
“I’m with you, too, okay? Anything you need. Friendships are a two-way street.”
His face twisted a little. “Friendship, yeah,” (84%)

Once they got together though….holy hell, they made up for lost time! I was not expecting so much sex after the majority of the first book was sex-free!
"I know it's really soon, but I feel like we have been together forever." I said that with conviction because I was so certain.
“I feel the same way. I guess it’s because our hearts have always belonged with each other."

Likes:

•I loved the emotional storyline.
•Callum was the most adorable kid ever.
•I loved the neighbor so much!
•Very well written, you can tell she really researched her craft before publishing.
•Great banter.
•Hunter could not have been a more perfect guy (a bit too good!).
•I liked the girl friendships.
•The covers are GORGEOUS.

Dislikes:

•This duet needed a brutal content editor. ⅓ of it could have been cut, making it one amazing book.
•It moved way too slow for me. At 48% of the first book my notes say “It’s taking way too long for them to get together.” later I say “84%!!! Come on already!”
•Jules was so selfish and we never really had a good enough reason why she stayed away from friends and family for 8 years. Luckily she won me over.
•Some of it, especially the sex scenes seemed a little like the author has read too many for reference. It had all the right words, but it was missing a natural, from-the-heart feeling.
•The Florida town didn’t feel like any Florida town I’ve been to, and I have lived here since the 80s. Florida is such a transient state that we never really get that “small town” feel. (I know this is nit-picky but it stood out to me.)

The Down & Dirty:
The Like a Hurricane Duet shows the fantastic potential of Kristie Leigh as an author. I loved the story and the writing, but she needed a content editor that wasn’t afraid to hurt her feelings to cut at least a third of this duet and make it a single book. Wrecked by Her was an emotional sloooooow burn with the couple still “friends” at 84%. I love a single mom story, and I love a second-chance romance, so this duet checked all my boxes. Her son Callum was adorable, Hunter was patient and wonderful, and I loved all her friends. Despite my thinking it was too long, there was not one moment where I wanted to stop reading. If this was Kristie Leigh’s debut, I can’t wait to see what she produces with a little more experience under her belt!

*Full Disclosure: Kristie is a friend of mine, but I purchased these books myself.

Wrecked By Her by Kristie Leigh is book one in the Like A Hurricane Duet series. First, the cover of this book is gorgeous. Leigh couldn’t have picked a better picture to represent her hero and heroine. There are parts of this book that are very soul stirring. Hunter’s heart - “No matter how hard I tried, being around her but not with her shredded me. I couldn’t be normal when everything about me was broken.” Hunter Rivers has been in love with Julianne Davis since 5th grade. Hunter’s character is one of those dreamy book boyfriends that every woman would love to have. He is sensitive and kind as well as gorgeous. Julianne on the other hand, has to be the most selfish person in the story. It was hard to sympathize with her when I didn’t really like her. Her constant clueless state as to Hunter’s true feelings grated on my nerves. “I shook my head. I didn’t know why I read so much into everything. I mean, on one hand, I thought Hunter was a great guy, and he was just being nice. But then he looked at me or said some things that threw me for a loop...” Really? Everyone is telling Julianne how much Hunter loves her and she doesn’t know? There were parts of this book that just dragged. I would say that a good 1/4th should be eliminated. It took way too long for the hero and heroine to unite. And why two books? On the positive side I thoroughly enjoyed Julianne’s little boy Calum. Leigh brings the toddler to life so realistically. His chubby cheeks and misspoken words are adorable. I was gifted a copy of this book.

Jules & Hunter were childhood best friends that began a romantic relationship during their Florida high school years.. Everyone thought they were made for each other. Without a proper goodbye to Hunter, Jules left to attend college in California. This was my first clue into how she was emotionally stunted & selfish. Her mom visited her a few times but Jules did not come home once in eight years, that is, until she was notified that her mom was ill.

Hunter worked hard, owned a construction company, was kind & gentlemanly, thoughtful & almost too perfect, even for a book boyfriend. He visited Jules' mom once a week over tea & never gave up hope that one day they would find their way back to each other.

Jules baffled me. From beginning to end I couldn't comprehend why she refused to come home until health news regarding her mom made it impossible for her to stay away & why, facing Hunter & her friends was something she dreaded. She had an enormous support system, called or texted them frequently yet there was an internal negative conversation going on inside her. Again, baffling.

I didn't dislike Jules, although she was a puzzle but thankfully the storyline, Hunter & many secondary characters kept my interest. There is a cliff hanger so be prepared to invest in book two.
I'll have to wait & see if the second book alters my opinion of her.

This is Kristie's debut novel and I cannot wait to dive into the second one. I read this is one sitting and it was fantastic.

I am a big lover of second chance novels and this one grabbed me right from the Blurb! I was lucky enough to get and ARC of this series and it is the sweetest!

This was a fun spin that our Hero was still very much in love with the Heroine all these years later. Usually I find that it is the opposite. Life just keeps throwing curve balls at them and by the end of the book I was 100% ready for the heat to turn up even more.

This part of the duet brought ALL the feels and tears but I absolutely loved our Heroine's son, and Hunter and Jules were the best. This book has the laughs as well, but it is totally an emotional read that the title proves to you at the start.

I know this is a duet and I will say the first book felt a little short to me, I think I would prolly prefer the two, together for that reason, but that is totally just me, I happen to like slightly longer reads as opposed to shorter duets.

This book had that southern charm feel to it. It was fairly light hearted but had angst to it that broke my heart for Jules and why she has and is going through. I’m not going to say I really understand her as a character but I sympathized with her.

My heart broke the most for Hunter. He is an amazing lead hero. Most of the time I like the super alpha hero’s, mainly because I can feel how they feel for the heroine but hunter was very sweet. I wanted him to alpha up some and while he didn’t, he was a great lead.

The overall story was a very slow burn. Not even a kiss between out leads. Being the first in a duet, it focuses more on their friendship instead of the romance of it. I totally respect the author for how it worked out. It was an overall beautiful story.

I’m going to say that the blurb of the book was slightly misleading. It made me think the heroine kept their child away from the hero and it was a big surprise, but really, the hero knew about the kid and the child wasn’t his. It wasn’t really some big shocking scene that for my heart pumping. It slightly disappointed me. Not saying that made it a bad book, just mislead me slightly and had me expecting something different.

Even with the few issues I had with the story, I look forward to seeing where the story goes for Jules and Hunter. Even the secondary characters which were pretty obvious. With great banter, that small time charm, a beautiful friendship, this book will be good for readers wanting a good beach weekend read. 4 stars #2OCCJD

Where can I get a Hunter? This was the first book I read by Leigh and it won't be my last.

Jules and Hunter were high school sweethearts. Jules left Hunter behind to go off to California for school. It broke his heart. Fast forward eight years. Jules is a single mom who is having to return home because her mother is sick. She hasn't seen Hunter since she left all those years ago.

Now, she's back and they are both faced with the lingering feelings for one another but when tragedy strikes and Jules tries to run will everything between them be done for good?

Hunter is one of my favorite book boyfriends ever! He was so caring and just that perfect gentleman you will swoon all over. Jules is strong, independent and says whatever is on her mind. Her and Taylor's friendship will crack you up more than once.

I was having such deja vu while reading this book. I recently read a book, Yesterday is Gone by H.J. Bellus, which is nearly identical to this book. Except, instead of the MC's Mom it was her grandfather who was like her dad and the child she had actually belonged to the man she left behind. Second chance romances are always hit or miss with me. And the characters in this book did not react in ways that seemed, normal? Normal maybe not being the right word, Jules seemed kinda cold to me but Hunter seemed to care too much. I guess he cared enough for both of them. And you have to read both books in the duet because you are probably not going to like how this first book ends. This was maybe a 2.5 star read for me but I rounded it up to 3 stars because I am going to assume book two gives you the ending you wanted.

I won this book from the giveaways at Goodreads.com.

Jules & Hunter loved each other for a long time, but when she moved away for college and broke up with him “for the best” he never moved on. He never stopped loving her.

8 years later she returns home when her Mama gets sick and she quickly realized she never stoped loving him either.
Only now that her world has been ripped apart, she decides she’s got to leave, once again, “for the best.” Throwing himself out there and putting it all on the line isn’t enough to make Jules stay, is it?

I enjoyed this story (for the most part) there are a couple of things that irritated me but I got through them. I will say I think Jules is so selfish. I don’t love her character. Hopefully she redeems herself in the conclusion.

This book had me with so many feels and brought me so many tears. The twists that happen in this book you don't see coming. Everyone needs a man like Hunter in their life because he is just so truly devoted to her and literally held onto hope for YEARS! He's the type of man that all woman need in their life! The way this book ends it leaves you dying for the next book to find out what happens next!

I really liked it

This is my first.book of kristie and I really enjoyed it.
The reading flowed easily and the story had a lot of bite to keep bringing me back and want more.
For the sad.situation in the book it kinda kept the light breezy feeling about it which I quite liked kinda like some good sides to a bad one if that makes sense.
I can't wait.for more of Hunter and Jules story in book 2 because she's completely wrecked him in this one now I'm seeking to heal my heart with the next book.

I found this to be a good debut story about child hood sweethearts who get their second chance. Jules is back home to help her mom out with her young son and is thrown back into the path of her childhood dreams. I found the story had an easy flow although there were times I was ready to shake some sense into her. I am curious to see how book two plays out.

I have so many thoughts about this book so I’ll try to get them out coherently.

We first meet Jules and Hunter at the end of high school, during the time of various going away parties for friends going off to college. Jules had broken up with Hunter because she was moving to California from Florida for college, even though they both still loved each other. Eight years later, a phone call brings Jules and her two year old son back to her hometown.

Let’s start with what I liked. Hunter was an all around great guy. He ran the family business, he was kind and helpful, and he still had tea with Jules’ mom every week even though he and Jules had broken up eight years ago. He was supportive of Jules when she needed and her rock to get her through a nightmare. Jules is a good mom to Calum, too. That kid is adorable. I also liked Taylor and her relationships with both Jules and Hunter. And even though I hate crying, certain scenes near the end had me sobbing (in public!) and that’s a rarity for me and a representation of how real the author’s writing is. And Margaret next door is a treasure.

Now, what I didn’t like. There was a scene early in the book, with Hunter and a friend in a bar talking relationships. They both kept referring to it as “chick talk” and implying that a “real man” wouldn’t have such conversations with his best friend. Because it’s feminine and therefore inferior to say “hey the love of my life is back in town after 8 years and I have feelings about that”?? That kind of subtle toxic masculinity burns me up.

Moving on…

The ending is not an ending at all, but a cliffhanger. It’s quite abrupt, though. We are taken from an intensely emotional experience to hope to a screeching halt of a WTF where did that come from? The cliffhanger is an angry one, with multiple characters involved. It will leave you feeling some kind of way, when you figure out what let me know. The good news is we don’t have long to wait until the second half of this book is released. However, if cliffhangers make your blood boil, you may want to wait until the other book is released and read them back to back.

Overall, it’s a good book and interesting story. I’m looking forward to seeing how this all works out.

3.5 Stars-Should be One Book

Kristie Leigh did a nice job on her first book. Giving her readers a handful of characters with depth that each had a story of thier own, as well as a beautiful cover.

"I couldn't be normal when everything about me was broken."

That is the sensitive to the the max, Hunter, who lost his high school love eight years ago and hasn't recovered. While I loved how emotional he was, it got real old, real quick. Hunter turned from a sensitive good guy to a doormat for Jules. She never said goodbye or called in the years she was gone, but he was right there the minute she came back home. Ugh.

Jules left eight years ago for college and decided to not to return to her small town. Never really learned why, but she finally does when her mother needs help. Jules is selfish from the get go and didn't grow on me. Her favorite thing is wine and her son, in that order. She may be twenty five or six, I don't even remember, but the girl can't make it through one situation without tons of wine. It started getting on my nerves.

So Jules is back in town, taking everything she can from her family and friends once again. It's all about her and when her friend Taylor finally tells her straight to her face, I jumped for joy. She doesn't deserve a man as sweet as Hunter, or a friend as good as Taylor, but hey, I didn't write the book.

Wrecked by her is well written, however didn't tickle my fancy and the fact that it is split into two books is beyond me, as it could have been wrapped up nicely in one. We are left with tons of questions, nothing about the story truly ever explained. Luckily, I have the other book waiting to be read or I may have taken a pass on it altogether.

I'm impressed with Kristie Leigh's debut novel, as I was gripped from the very beginning all the way to the end. Jules & Hunter were High School sweethearts, until she went away to college, and broke up with him to follow her dreams. She didn't even have the courage to say goodbye, and Hunter never stopped loving her. Fast forward 8 years, and Jules is called back home because her mother is very sick, only she's not coming alone. She's a single mom to a 2 year old tiny human (who tried to steal the show more than once), and she just wants to help her mom, then leave. Since she's from a small town, everyone knows when she's back, and Hunter is waiting to finally face after so many years, as again, he never stopped loving her, nor hoping that they would get another chance. I had a couple of things that really didn't sit well with me, and the main one was Jules. She's a selfish, flight risk that drove me crazy throughout. She never stopped loving Hunter either, but she could never keep her mind open enough to think about someone else, when it came to her feelings. Luckily, she had a fantastic bestie named Taylor, who absolutely told her off about it finally, and I almost stood up to clap. I loved Hunter too, but man, I felt on more than one occasion that he should have moved on. Now, this is the first book of the Like A Hurricane Duet, so obviously, it ended on a cliffy, so I'm praying that Jules grows the hell up in the conclusion, as she's emotionally challenged. Anyway, I'm very anxious to read that next book, and thankfully, I already have it on my kindle! Don't go by my opinion though, (sometimes the summer heat really makes me cranky) just one click this baby to decide for yourselves! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

In life, we all have a man we dream about that is utterly and completely devoted to us. For me, this is one I could vividly envision and see. These characters and small town meddling will make you laugh and appreciate where you grew up. The way these characters interact and support each other blew me away!! This small town, emotional, fate-inspiring romance book will make you see true love exists if we only see it.

Warning: This book ends with a cliffhanger!!

Wrecked. That’s the proper way to describe how I feel after reading this book. My emotions are all over the place. The small town, dreamy romance will shake your world up. I felt each and every emotion for Jules. The way this author described and provided this situations was epic and hit me right in the core.

This was a story of second chances after heartache, fate playing its part in life to help you see where you need to be, and picking up the missing pieces of your life regardless of what you actually want. I feel like this story would appeal to all romance lovers. There are no steamy parts. Just heartfelt, sweet devotion that has spanned for many years.

Jules and Hunter - such an amazing couple and you can feel the sparks from the authors descriptions. They have been through so much together. He is there for her through every tough moment and so strong for her. The ending is a cliffhanger and will make you scream and want to shake Jules.

Hold on to your seats folks - it’s a bumpy, enjoyable ride with Hunter and Jules.

Wrecked by Her is book one in a duet from Like a Hurricane and the authors debut novel. This story will capture your heart and hurt your heart over and over. Hunter and Jules story is given to us to show the relationship now and then to give us the backfill we need to get the full emotional effect of these characters. Jules left town over eight years ago and although she has not been back until recently, Hunter still loves her through this all. He is going to show her that while he was Wrecked by Her that he wants to love them and have a future with them. But…Jules does what she does best and wants to run. Haha, love how her mom does a little something.
You will fall in love with Hunter from the beginning, Jules you like, but want to strangle a few times with her actions and how she handled things not only with Hunter, but her mom and BF. At the end she grows on you, but that will be decided based upon how this plays out in the next book. Since we know it is a cliffy since it’s a duet, you won’t have to wait long for the outcome as they release in the same month luckily. In the meantime, listen to “Hurricane” by Luke Combs to see how it fits Hunter/Jules. If you are a duet gal, I highly recommend this one to you.

Man the author did a perfect job of picking out the title and the naming the series. This book will definitely wreck you and make you feel like you've been thru a hurricane. My heart went out to Jules but she is so wishy washy.. She has this amazing guy who's willing to be by her side, hang with her kid and spend all the time in the world with her mother but we can't say what we feel to him. She just strung him along and then destroyed his heart. My heart really went out to Hunter. His heart has always belonged to Jules but she steps on it by leaving. Her bestie Taylor and the neighbor Margaret make this book more heartfelt and real. They have love and want the best for Jules and Hunter but they tell the honest truth to her. They let her grieve and pulls her out of it when needed as well. I experienced so many emotions while reading this. I mean, I had ugly tears rolling down my face with the description of everything that happened during the funeral. This book will rip your heart out but at the same time, you will absoultely love Hunter! He's amazing, caring and a truly a man who cares about people. He has a heart of gold. I just loved him!

Wrecked By Her was a solid debut from Kristie Leigh. Eight years after leaving high school boyfriend Hunter without a goodbye to head to college, Jules is back home to see her sick mother.

She’s now the mother of a toddler, and while she and Hunter have occasionally kept in touch, he hasn’t seen her since she left him. He’s always held out hope that they’d reunite some day, as does her mother.

But when her mom dies, Jules decides it’s too hard being home and plans to return to California. She and Hunter hadn’t quite rekindled their relationship, but it’s clear that they both still care deeply. So he’s devastated when she once again runs away.

Like I said, this is a solid offering but I never quite got WHY Jules left Hunter behind. Was she holding him back? Why did she never want to come back home? I feel like knowing those answers would have made it a 5-star read. Maybe that will be addressed in the conclusion to this duet!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

For your first book you did a great job the title fits perfectly! I could not put it down! 5 Stars!! A must read.
There is so much to keep you interested I can't pin point just one thing, but there is a cute little boy that will have you laughing or in shock.
Jules and Hunter were young when they feel in love. Jules though left for college and left work Hunter's heart. Hunter kept in touch but it wasn't the same as having Jules in the same area. Jules had been gone 8 years and her Mama's health brings her home. Will she stay or will she leave and break Hunter completely?
The love throughout is just endearing and it does come with heartache. The story line flows so you'll always want to keep reading. You can totally feel the emotions of the characters as you read their story. You'll root for the characters and then be frustrated and then cry. There's more to come and I can't wait.

Wrecked by Her is the first book in the duet from Like a Hurricane and the debut book for the author.

The story with both seizes and breaks you heart. Hunter and Jules story shows the relationship they have now but also shows us their history so we understand the full emotional effect on both Hunter and Jules.

Jules left over 8 years ago and didn’t return till recently but Hunter still loves her and is going to show her that although it broke his heart letting her leave he’s not going to let her go for a 2nd time.

You will love Hunter from the start but with Jules there are times when you just want to shake her for her actions and how she deals with things not only with Hunter but also her mum and best friend. Towards the end she grows on you and I’m hoping that I will like her even more in the next book.

I cannot believe this is Kristie Leigh’s debut. Wrecked by her is a beautifully emotional, ugly cry, slow burn that will absolutely knock you off your feet! My heart was entirely ripped out while reading this, yet here I am dying for the second half of Hunter and Jules’ story. There’s just something about the love that exists between them that really grabs your heart even through the emotional upheaval that happens in this book.
It’s like you can feel how much they’re meant to be no matter how much life has thrown at them. Hunter is so steadfast in his love for her I don’t think anything could truly ever put an end to his feelings. While Jules may run scared her love is just as deep for him. I’m ready to drop everything and get right into the next book!

Wrecked by Her is book 1 in the Like a Hurricane duet and is the debut for author Kristie Leigh. I enjoyed getting to know Jules and Hunter and there story could have been off the charts but for me it just came up a little short. Jules grated on my nerve a bit, she come across as a little selfish and didn't really spare a thought about Hunter's feelings at times.

Hunter has been in love with Jules forever and that didn't change when she left him eight years ago. Now she's back with a very adorable little boy and Hunter is hoping this could be their second chance but will Jules feel the same?

Not a bad read overall and I look forward to reading the second part of Jules and Hunters story.
