One deep breath. Two slow blinks. Three hollow beats. I’m still here. After three years, that reminder isn’t as necessary. But everyone has their bad days. This is definitely one of them. Until an adorable little boy dashes into my store. His zest for life makes me smile in a way that’s been long lost. Then I meet his father. Well, confront is more like it.
Brance Stone is volatile. Offensive. Harsh. And can’t be bothered to care. Not that I want him to. I get frostbite just looking into Brance’s glacial stare. But there’s something undeniable about him.
My misery suddenly craves company. The suffocating numbness lifts whenever Brance is near. That alone should have me running in the opposite direction. Try as I might, there’s no avoiding him. If only I could understand why. As if he’d let me.
I don’t ask. He doesn’t tell. A silent, bitter truce settles between us. That was our first mistake. It’s certainly not the last.

Rae, once again delivers all the feels with Ask Me Why. It is such a complex and emotional read, one that just wouldn't allow me to set it aside.
I was so captivated with Brance and Braelyn. Their characters compliment each other so enticingly well. Brance is such a crass a-hole, the best kind of man, and that's what I love about him. Braelyn is a breath of fresh air. She has been traumatized and stuck in a downward spiral, but still finds her spunk. She is a fiesty little firecracker, I just adore her.
This story guys, it's just downright amazing, captivating and panty melting. I was so addicted to it. So invested in it. I cant wait to revisit Brance and Braelyn!
Ahh... get ready to hug your kindle and SWOOON! This story is just salt water taffy wrapped in a sundae with TWO cherries on top... lol! Braelyn is an amazing character, recovering from a car crash that left her alone and heartbroken... Brance starts out just rude and arrogant, and I was like, what? Am I supposed to like this guy??? Answer = YES.
Because then there's Ollie, and that little boy will just steal your heart. I just wanted to scoop him up and squeeze him. And he's determined Braelyn needs to marry his dad... It's literally the most adorable thing ever.
So clear your schedule, because once you start, you won't want to stop! It's enemies to lovers, it's single dad, it's really beautiful. Enjoy!
The author stole my heart with this enemies-to-lovers emotional romance. She brought the angst and all the feels! From broken to pieced back together, these two found their HEA.
Braelyn has been doing her best to move on and live. A tragic accident left her alone and suffering from loss and panic attacks. She picked herself up and followed her dream of opening Thicket, a store that sells candy and unique odds and ends. She’s content, but is about to realize that she is also incredibly lonely.
Brance is hardened by life. His only soft spot is for his son Ollie. Ollie is full or energy and life. He finds Thicket one day and makes an instant connection with Braelyn. His father wants no connections because it just leads to heartache. However, Ollie has his own agenda because he is searching for a mom.
The author created an emotional story with some of the most amazing chemistry. Their journey was wrought with sexual tension, witty banter and revelations. Brance was a total alphaphole but the love he had for his son made him redeemable. Braelyn was strong, even when she felt weak. She was a survivor, now she just needed to find her happiness and the future she deserved. Get out the tissues, you may just shed a few tears.
Obnoxiously rude asshole of a male protagonist, who repeatedly insulted the heroine without any reason (not that a reason would give him a go to vomit the words he did...) The same scenario but him being ordinary looking and she would tell him to fuck off. Instead she was turned on.
Dear author, what message do you give to your readers with this story? Shall women give a man, who was rude and insulting, a chance? Later on you even make your heroine beg him to have sex with her. Is it how you see a worthy woman? Is it how you would proceed in similar situation??
I saw someone recommend this as a slow burn + enemies to lovers romance and I was like YESSSS. But a couple of chapters in I realized this would be a big NO.
And it is. A HUGE NO!!
I hardly ever review books I DNF. But there's aplha male and there's asshole. Guess which category Brance falls into?
He treats Braelyn with all the despise and disrespect a sexist pig would and he insults her grief, her dreams and passion. He refers to women as beings that deserve to be judged for everything they do (or for even existing). His hatred for the mother of his child is based on the fact that she resented him for practically forcing her to keep a baby she didn't want and he talks down on her dream of becoming a doctor. As if a woman can't be a doctor without being cold and "frigid". Seriously? SERIOULY? I don't understand how any of what he did and said in the chapters I read could ever be okay...or could be fixed by anything he might do in the next chapters.
Now, I'm trying to not judge Braelyn too hard because of everything she went through but OMG GIRL, WAKE THE FUCK UP. YOU DESERVE BETTER!!!
Her relationship with the asshole's kid was sort of adorable, even though that kid didn't sound like any five-year-old I've ever met.
Once again, this author has gone and thrown me into a plot so thick with angst, emotions, and heartache that it was enough to make cry and I did cry. Harloe poured 𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐄𝐄𝐋𝐒 into this book, and it had me hooked from page one right through to the last page of the book. It was epic. I am a sucker for angst. Even though I know it'll gut punch me every damn time, I always go back for more and Harloe is one of those authors I continue to go back to and read and re-read. With each and every book, I am left thinking that it cannot get any better than this, but every damn time she goes and tops it and this book did just that.
Ask Me Why focuses on two main characters, Braelyn and Brance and their emotional, angst-filled, all-consuming, addictive love story... And let me tell you now... You are going to SWOON, and cry and maybe curse the author out throughout this book. I did... I'll own that shit.
Braelyn is trying to move on from a horrible and tragic accident that has left her grieving and suffering from major panic attacks/anxiety and more. She's done the best she can and continued on with her life. She opened a store called Thicket that sells candy and other different things. It had been a dream of hers, and she was happy and content for the most part, but that all comes crashing down when a young boy comes into her store and she forms a connection with the boy and it's then that she realizes just how unfulfilled her life really is, how lonely she is.
Brance is the father of a young boy named Ollie, he is a closed off, he's a bit of an asshole (the best kind) and has a rock hard personality after things in his own life haven't been easy either, and he really only has one weakness... His son. The apple of his eye. Ollie instantly clings to Braelyn, he's looking for a new mom but Brance wants none of it. He thinks that it will only lead to more heartache for him... But Ollie has other plans for them.
These two had sexual tension you could cut with a knife and it seemed it got even more intense the more they fought it. The chemistry in this book was off the charts and the way these two bounced off of each other was amazing, witty, sassy, fun and you couldn't help but cheer these two on and hope that they see their happiness is right in front of them. It started out as enemies to lovers but grew into so much more. With that said, this book was swoony in a sense, but it was emotional, it was full of angst and situations and twists that had my heart feeling like it was being stomped on repeatably, the overall push and pull with these two was enough to send me crazy, but I loved it!!
It held my attention all the way through, and my heart and my emotions and it didn't let go until the end, and as much as these types of plots have the ability to twist me up inside... I am addicted to them!
Harloe has become a fast favorite of mine over the last few months, and I am so grateful I gave her a chance because she has gone and raised the bar extremely high with this one and it most definitely is 𝐀 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃!!
This book broke me, ripped out my heart, tore it to shreds and burned the leftover pieces to ash because some of it hit way too close to home. It’s almost like Rae cracked open the door of my heart and wrote what she saw there, so I was immediately all in. I felt my soul connecting with Braelyn and held her close in the deepest part of my numb, ruined heart. I lived every moment of her story with Brance and his son, Oliver, as if it were my own.
Three years earlier, Braelyn suffered the most devastating tragedy that left her broken, empty and numb, with frequent flashbacks and nightmares to keep her company. But she's surviving, day by day, with the help of a beautiful thicket out by the cliffs, her friend Sadie, and her store, the Thicket, which she opened not long after the tragedy. The thicket is a special place. It’s “a place to get lost for a while. Find purpose. Center yourself. Find true happiness,” and it’s the Thicket that an adorable five-year-old stumbles across on his quest for candy.
Adorable, energetic Ollie finds so much more than candy when he meets Braelyn at her store. It quickly becomes his favorite place to be, and little does he know, but Ollie brings the first ray of sunshine Braelyn's life has seen in three years. Thus begins the sweetest romance I’ve ever read between a heroine and child, but our hero, Brance, has a way of souring anything.
With everything in me, I wanted to hate Brance. He's rude, arrogant, mean and hard, with a heart of ice. He's the storm clouds that hide the sun and chase away any chance of a rainbow, but it’s possible there is a little justification for his attitude. His son is his top priority, and I found myself warming to him as I saw his love for Ollie throughout the book.
Even wounded, Raelyn is far too kind, giving and loving to take on Brance, and I was certain it was only a matter of time before he would destroy her all over again. My mistake was underestimating the power of love and determination from a five-year-old matchmaker. But Brance and Raelyn also made the same mistake.
Ah, this book! As heart breaking and devastating as it is, it filled my heart with hope and joy after flinging it around in an emotional hurricane. I adore all of these characters, but it's precious little Ollie who had me falling head over heals for him. He was the constant ray of light through the angsty ups and downs and he even managed to carve out a space in my heart for his broody father.
Rae is definitely at the top of her game with this phenomenal read, and you need this book in your life. It will batter your heart but leave you ecstatic and singe your soul but leave you smiling, and these characters will remain a part of you long after the last page. Don’t miss this exquisite, spellbinding, evocative read!

I just loved this story!!! I fell in love with every character some quicker than others lol but you will soon see why.
Braelyn has been through so much tragedy devastation, and heartache . We learn a bit about her past but we really get to know her more through her shop and through the eyes of one hyper sweet innocent loving little boy named Ollie. Omg I fell in love with that little boy, he will have you wrapped around his little finger and you can’t say no to the little guy and neither could anyone else....
Anyways sidetracked so we learned a little bit about Braelyn and how she meets Ollie for the first time when he wanders into her little shop following his sweet tooth looking for candy, you can almost see right of way the connection between those two and all he goes back to his dad who which I have to say I did not like at first he took a while for me to get to Like but once I knew more about him and the same thing went for Braelyn she had to get to know him more because the first time they met let’s just say things went totally sideways mr. I’m all high and mighty lawyer, knows he’s good looking and Doesn’t trust woman ... yeah that’s Brance when you first all get to meet him he comes off like that but give a guy a chance. In the end you end up falling in love with him because he would do anything in the world for Ollie ... sometimes it takes a five-year-old to see things that two others cannot and to kind a help nudge the way.. The story had your ups and your downs your sideways your backwards. Each of them had their own stories, both have been hurt in different ways and they both find each other with a little help from a sweet tooth hyper little boy... Braelyn and Brance thought they could try the hookup not to get emotionally attached could they do it could they make that work? As much as they try things always work out different sometimes you find love in places you’re not looking for...
Oh and if you get emotionally connected with these characters you prepared you will cry not a bad cry but any motional oh my god that was so sweet to cry.... OK it could’ve just been me but it hit the heartstrings hard!!! Loved this read
I’ve read a couple books from this author and when I seen this beauty I just knew I’d have to get reading it and gah, I was so damn right. This book delivered so much more than I ever expected it to do. It packed a powerful punch of emotions.
Brance and Braelyn are both suffering in their own ways. One suffering from the aftermath or loosing someone they loved, someone who was their lives and the other suffering from the two people who he thought wouldn’t leave. It’s stopped them from putting their hearts out there over fear of the past repeating itself.
Both of them are opposites and watching them spend time together and interact has been so much fun.
Harloe Rae did an absolutely amazing job bringing these characters to life and their story. It was so much more than I expected and I absolutely loved every second of it. All the emotions and everything else was brilliant. I’m in absolute awe of how much I loved this.
Ask Me Why is a second chance romance full of so many feels you won’t know what hit you.
I imagine this book is going to be heaven for some readers who like these type of heroes, heroes are assholes and misogynists. Me? I couldn’t hate the hero more if I try.
“He’s ridiculing my dream. My job. My livelihood. My blood, sweat, and tears. All with a nasty smirk on his handsome face. Warning bells clang loudly in my brain, but I don’t need them. Brance is the type of man I know damn well to stay far away from.”
“Usually my dick gets hard for high heels and short skirts and seductive curves on display. This woman is the opposite of the chicks I usually fuck. Apparently the desperation is messing with my standards. Or my cock is confused from the arousing banter. Either way, I need to get laid. I’ll take whatever at this point, except her.”
“Don’t flatter yourself, sugar. I prefer my women classy and refined and down to fuck wherever.”
“I love to fuck. I’m the furthest from an abstinent saint. Having a woman purr in my ear to take her harder gets me off. But more often than not, that hassle is greater”
The asshole also uses her grief as a method of insult. And this is what readers are loving. He also calls women who wear skintight dresses an easy prey. He’s garbage and a pig. I’m sure if the heroine’s does this then she’s a bitch and whore but hero does it, it’s because he needs the experience to satisfy the heroine or any woman for that matter.
“I always wanted children.” “Past tense?” I nod slowly. “That ship has sailed.” Brance studies my face. “Why?” “Not important.” He narrows his gaze. “Can’t find a man to knock you up?” His nasty insinuation makes my eyes sting. “You’re so sensitive.”
👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 To the author for managing to not only bashed hero’s ex but his mother also!
I managed to finish the book with great difficulty. The whole plot is fine and nothing new. Its focusing about life after traumatic event. Heroine lost someone she loved when she was young. There is that single dad trope.
I am OK with the writing and familiar with Miss Rae works before. I have lukewarm feeling toward Miss Rae books. What really throw me out is the Bracen, the hero. His attitude toward the end of the book is... rude and cruel. His words toward the heroine is just.... unacceptable. Unfortunately there is not much to explain of why he acted so cold and cruel.
I want to give this book 3 stars. Due to Bracen, I cut it to 2 stars.
The H is a condescending ass. VERY rude. He is nothing but broody and crass, calculating and impersonal.
I don’t know why the h talks with him even after his insulting and hurting jabs. Their initial encounters are full of intense conversations where he he keeps insulting her. But the h was too forgiving and kept ogling at him even after he acts rude to her.
There is a lot of sexual tensions. I will give it that. So when the tension becomes too much to handle, the H just stalks in the h’s shop with the mission to forcefully seduce her. But no force or seduction is needed as she is already desperate for him. And after their first kiss she begs him to keep going. And after their quickie session he literally brushes her off telling that this indiscretion cost him several hours and that he’ll be working late to catch up. That was the height of assholery.
And later the same day the h goes in his law firm to make a will. What? Can anyone be more doormat than this? And then he tells her when they go to eat out that this is not a date and that don’t get any ideas. Wtf?
Sorry I’m done. I don’t care if they get together or not. The h could have done with so much better. But unfortunately she is too busy ogling him because he is hot af.
5 B&B Stars Oh how I loved this book. Brance and Brae stole me away and I'm still there, floating around on an imaginary cloud of happiness, with Ollie scooting down the candy aisle, grabbing some taffy. Let me be clear. This book was not all fluffy. Not one bit. It will tear you apart and put you back together again, piece by piece, exactly like it did to the 2 MC's. Their ARCs are perfectly executed down to the last detail. I loved everything about them, even on their worst days. And Ollie...he was adorable. Single parent books are my jam and he stole my heart and wrapped it around his little finger. READ THIS BOOK...if you love a hard ass alpha, who redeems himself, you will fall hard for Brance. If you love a broken woman, who has picked up her pieces and glued herself back together, rather misshapenly, you will love her. I promise.
I’m definitely confused about all of those five star reviews. Did I read something different? This book was not good yet not horrible either. The story felt forced and completely unrealistic. It felt like I was reading from a five year olds POV as well, and I’m not into that. The chemistry between the guy and girl was non existent. Felt more like the heroine and the kid had more chemistry and that was an instant type of feeling. Very weird. I’m glad that this book was on KU, because I would’ve been very upset had I spent even 99 cents on it. I just wish I could get my time back from reading this book.
First I FLOVE Brance and his moody sexy self!!! One minutes he's calm and collected and then the next he's moody & sarcastic! Reading Brance & Braelyn's first interaction made me a believer that this was going to be a book that I would not be able to put down until I got to the end and let me say that they did not disappoint.
Getting to the root of why Brance is the way he is, had me sympathizing with all that he went through yet the way he used that against Braelyn had me wanting to use my sorry karate skills on him 😁 I loved their constant banter and even though at times I was like "No you did not just go there" I kept hoping for their HEA. And let me not forget about Ollie, Brance's sweet and ornery son, he added to this amazing story. I fell in love with all of them and want more-yes I know I'm being greedy 💗 Kara~ 5 Stars
I absolutely LOVED this! When it comes to my favorite types of romances, give me a broody, sarcastic guy and a woman that won't bow down ANY DAY and I will DEVOUR it. Ask Me Why is that type of story!
Braelynn and Brance - these two main characters have both been hurt. One doesn't want to hurt anymore and one doesn't want to be hurt again. They understand each other's issues in a way no one else can. Their chemistry was EVERYTHING!Enemies-to-lovers, in my opinion, have the hottest chemistry. The build-up is fun and sexy and just so yummy!
Then there is Ollie! This little boy stole my heart. He's young, naive, and like many boys his age, conniving!
"Ice clots my veins, the freezing layer familiar and almost comforting. " The writing in this story was incredible! This story had painful moments for both characters and even between the two together and I could feel it as if it was my own pain. On the other hand, I was all smiles when they had their banter and were flirting!
I highly recommend this book! It has all the feels - I laughed and I cried! If you are a fan of contemporary, enemies-to-lovers romance, this is for you!
I was given an advance readers copy of this book and have decided to write a voluntary honest review. This was very first book by this author and have one other by her that now I can't wait to read. Brance is definitely what you would call bully, he was mean and arrogant. But still I fell for him. I know I know why always @sses that's easy they are sexyiest lol. Braelyn she's a sweetheart with such a good heart. But in my honest opinion i knew she was hurting for Devon but she he just didn't seem like her match. No that job was left to someone else no spoilers though.
Ask Me Why by Harloe Rae hit the spot for me. This story starts out with the main characters as major enemies’ story.
Braelyn is suffering with PTSD. As a survivor of an automobile accident that took her fiancés life, she can’t reconcile why she survives, and he doesn’t. She has a hard time making it through some days. If it wasn’t for her store, Thicket and her best friend Sadie she could turn into a hermit
Brance doesn’t have a kind bone in his body, except for Ollie and Mary the grandmotherly nanny. He is the stereotypical badass lawyer. He doesn’t let emotions get in the way of getting the best divorce settlement for his clients. His success at work has him on the fast-track to partner, his ultimate goal.
One day when Ollie is on an outing with his nanny they find Thicket. Ollie falls in love with the store and the owner. He asks to return every day, which isn’t a problem for his nanny but when he asks his dad to take him on a Saturday, the daggers fly. Brance is super rude to Brae. He is suspect of every kindness she extends to Ollie. In his mind, he knows the games women play. What I love is that Brae doesn’t let him best her. She gives as good as she gets.
The journey from enemies to lovers is a bumpy road, but it is entertaining for the reader. There is so much pain that both characters need to reveal and work through before they can think about a relationship. I love Ollie. He never loses hope for a family and a love for his dad. Ollie is the bright star for Braelyn. Anticipating his visit gives her a reason to get up in the morning. At times I think there is no way this couple can find happiness regardless of how much chemistry there is between them. Other times, I cheer for them like bringing in the new year.
I am crazy about these characters and their story. While Ask Me Why is my first Harloe Rae read, it won’t be my last. It is refreshing that she didn’t fall into many of the standard storylines of the single dad and the new love interest. This story is a little different. Ask Me Why is a journey that doesn’t have an easy path albeit a realistic path. The support characters of Jordan and Sadie are the perfect complementary characters to the story. They are the friends everyone needs. They encourage with tough love when it is needed. I wouldn’t mind more of them in the future. In the meantime, I need to check out more Harloe Rae stories. Ask Me Why is a perfect summer read recommendation.
Ask Me Why by Harloe Rae was a kaleidoscope of emotions, from the icy wrath and irritation of Brance’s first initial reaction to Braelyn to the sweet, rainbow filled ending. Brance is a lawyer and a single dad. Braelyn’s the owner of a quirky store that Brance’s five-year-old son Ollie discovers when out shopping with his nanny. Braelyn and Ollie have an instant connection. It’s hard not to fall instantly in love with this rambunctious, happy child. How he’s some witty and full of life with a dad like Brance is beyond me?? That little boy? Love him to pieces. Braelyn has suffered heartache and doesn’t see her life ever getting any better. But somehow, Brance gets under her skin and they slowly start to fall. Brance is a tough character to like at first. He doesn’t take fools kindly, he’s a bit jaundiced with life in general, but he’s a fantastic dad. It’s his one true redeeming quality, because he is a real mean guy, not just to Braelyn but in his work life too. He just doesn’t let anyone close, at least until he starts to see the real Braelyn. She slowly allows him to see her pain, her sorrow. The story deals well with a few issues, it’s hard and gritty in places, soft and sweet in others. I adore Braelyn’s character, she was damaged, flawed, but she fought to get back to the girl she once was. Brance was harder, much harder to love, but he did have some fine moments. And darling little Ollie? That boy is a heart-breaker in the making. Hope we get to see his story somewhere down the line. The secondary characters helped carry the story and it was fun watching a second-hand romance blossom between Brance and Braelyn’s best friends. Will they get to have their own story too?
Jettisoned this one to my gitfafm shelf at 20%. Girls: what are you doing reading this misogynist trash? And guys- don't allow yourselves to be turned into neanderthal cliches- actually, that's insulting to Neanderthals!
I've read every Harloe novel and have loved them all, although I have favorites (aka Gent and Watch me Follow). I could always trust on a Harloe novel when I want a sweet but sexy book, with more of a lighthearted feel, a couple cheesy cute moments, and they always deliver! This is another great book by Harloe, and it is officially a competition between Gent and Ask Me Why to take the front runners spot! I'm not a fan of dead partners in books, so I'm glad there is very little that it is not problematic at all, it is mainly the accident itself, and what happened in it, that is traumatic. I really enjoyed the banter between Brance and Braelyn, and Ollie was super cute! I wish I had a little more of the secondary characters, but it also didn't take away from the novel. There are a couple repeat words that are a tad annoying such as Babe and spank bank, but this is an ARC so it may change, but it luckily, was more towards the end of the story, and not throughout. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and I can't wait for more by Harloe!
