I lost my first love at twenty years old. Then I was forced to drop out of school to become a single mom. I didn’t think I’d ever find love again. I didn’t want to replace my first. I didn’t want to erase his memory. But love isn’t convenient and it’s never easy. I fought our attraction. I pushed him away. But my heart fought harder. I have to decide what’s best not only for me, but also for my daughter. Even if that means losing everything.
Kelsey has always been an avid reader and writer and recently she has decided to share her stories with the world. She has a golden retriever she's madly in love with and a true crime obsession.
Okay... I don't know where to start with this book. It was... okay. Just okay.
Carson meets the love of her life on the first day of college her freshman year. Maddox pursues her and the begin their sweet love affair and Carson is blissfully happy. But her happiness is short lived when she finds out that Maddox has cancer. He is fighting to live but ultimately cancer wins and Maddox leaves the world the same day his baby girl is born. Fast forward five years and Carson is still coming to terms with her grief and moving on. She surprisingly feels an attraction to her architect designing her dream home. Wren is so different than Maddox yet there is an undeniable pull and she can't deny herself anymore. She also has her little girl to think about. Carson feels guilt for her feelings for Wren but this is what Maddox would have wanted and she has to accept that if she truly wants to move on and be happy.
I really wanted to bawl my eyes out. It was what I wanted while reading this and although this book deals with death and was supposed to be immensely heartbreaking, I wasn't overcome with emotions. I did shed a few tears and that was about it. I didn't connect with the characters and didn't feel their emotions, which I crave when reading books, so I made me enjoy the book even less. Carson frustrated me and her sister, Flynn was even worse. Her behavior was inexcusable and she walked all over people without them confronting her. She felt no remorse for what she said and was constantly babied. I don't know the reason why I disliked Carson. Maybe it was her behavior or her actions or it could be the fact that I could't connect with her.
Although I didn't like the characters very much, I will still read more of Kelsey's works. Her story lines are good.
“This life is nothing like I would’ve imagined, and it’s everything I didn’t know I wanted.”
Selfless by Kelsey Cheyenne is the first book to her Carolina Coastal Series and when I tell you that Selfless is the perfect title for this book, I truly mean it!
Carson’s emotional, beautiful, raw, and heartbreaking story from finding her first love, Maddox, and new love, Wren, years later was everything I could ever ask for and more!
Cheyenne delivered with the growth of Carson from a girl falling in love, into a woman and a lover, and then into a selfless mother to Ava.
Maddox was everything I loved in a sweet and funny hero. I loved how he was bold and true to his feelings and even though certain things happened, I was sad to learn the truth. I wanted to see him and Carson through, but in time, I understood.
... In walks Wren. He was absolutely perfect for Carson and Ava in so many ways! Although quiet and closed... he was also patient, understanding, gentle, and so loving. He knew what he wanted and stood by that. He was able to break down Carson’s walls and walk straight into her heart.
I loved everything from the setting, the build up, the growth, the family times, the love and warmth, and just everything in between! Cheyenne writes with so much heart, emotion, and depth. You can feel it, see it, and recognize it through her beautiful way of writing!
I can’t wait to see more of Carson, Wren, and Ava in the future books in this series! I’m so excited for what Cheyenne has in store!
There's something about Kelsey Cheyenne's writing that I'm addicted to. This story was heartbreakingly beautiful, and I just wanted the story to go on and on. The story is so real and amazing. Cheyenne weaves a realistic tale that has all the elements you want in a romance story. All the stars for Selfless.
Kelsey Cheyenne delivers yet another heart-wrenching satisfying read that will shred you in pieces one chapter and then rebuild your belief in love in the next. Selfless introduces us to Carson and Maddox, young innocent love. Their tragic love story will leave you devasted, yet you will only be one-third through this journey. Carson, now a single heart-broken mother, is slowly looking to put her life together when she crosses path with the uber-patient Wren who is assigned to build her a new home while also rebuilding Carson’s belief. Told with such care and compassion the story of Carson is yet another wonderful quest of a woman who stumbles yet always has the grit to push up and carry-on – a Kelsey specialty. Filled with heart and sweet tender moments, Selfless is book one in a new series that is off to a great start – looking forward to book 2.
Get the tissues, chocolate, and as much tequila as your credit card will let you this ones a doozy. Please dont get me wrong because this book is everything. Its heartbreaking and tragic but it's also healing and uplifting. This is the first ever book to make me cry. You feel so greatly for Carson as she loses her first love, but then Wren walks into her life. He is an abrupt man who doesnt always think before speaking. When he meets Carson he knows she needs to be in his life, in whatever capacity he can have her. Can Carson move on? Can Wren be who she needs? You'll want to inhale this book, every chapter it gets better and better. Cant wait for the next book.
This story truly broke my heart. I don't think I have ever truly cried like I did reading and re-leaving Maddox story. Cancer is such a hard subject for so many people, but it is a very realistic topic that so many people do not want to discuss. Kelsey did a wonderful job telling Maddox's story and then telling the story of Carson and Ava and how they had to cope after the loss of love one. Then there was the whole Carson and Wren story, my heart broke for Wren and Carson. There was so much baggage that Carson held on to and never truly dealt with. Even though Wren and Maddox were polar opposites, they were so much alike in so many ways. Carson and Ava found their Happy Ever After with Wren and Maddox always shinning down and being their to protect them no matter what.
Selfless was a beautiful read with some heartache! Loved getting Carson's journey with Maddox her first love to having to lose him! Then getting her present second chance with love with Wren! Ava was just adorable! I will most definitely read more by this author!
Kelsey Cheyenne as done it again Selfless was a beautiful read. This is her best yet. Part one was a bit difficult to read it was so sad and emotional that i cried and had to take a pause. Carson is a 18 year old girl starting college. There she meets Maddox. They end up dating and it was fast paced. They fell in love. Maddox was hiding a secret from Carson. It was so emotional. They end up getting pregnant.
Fast forward 5 years and carson is a single mother. She meets wren and he is so lovely to her and her daughter. Wren grounded carson and was her healer. They went through an emotional journey. In the end it was breathtaking.
Thank you kelsey for this beautiful book loved every minute of it. I highly recommend this book.
Cheyenne’s Selfless knocked me on my ass and I loved every single moment of it.
Carson’s journey of losing her first love and finding new love was real, raw, and beautiful. The progression she makes as a woman, lover, and mother was inspiring and wonderful to witness.
Wren was the perfect balance for Carson and her daughter, Ava. He was patient, kind, and loving. He knew from the beginning where he stood in their lives; not as a replacement but as an addition to their family.
Parts of Selfless (especially the first twelve chapters) was hard to read just because you feel the love between Carson and Maddox; however, they were needed to truly feel the journey of Carson’s healing and finding not only love again, but herself.
The secondary characters, which we will see again in their own books (as this is a series) added depth and humor to the heavy plot Cheyenne has given to us.
Selfless starts off the Carolina Coast Series with a heart warming message, a family that is real and not so perfect, and a couple that fought to be together. I can’t wait to read more in this series and see Carson, Wren, and Ava in future books!
Oh My Gosh Y’all this Book! My Poor Heart! I couldn’t imagine ever being in Carson’s place, but she was amazing. I loved her character in the beginning with Maddox. They were the perfect college sweethearts. She was beautiful and innocent and it was amazing and devastating at the same time to read about her experience all the wonderments of first love-all that in entails just to then experience the devastating loss of that first love as well.
Even knowing what the outcome could/would be she still loved him with all she had. It was pure, perfect young love. It left her with a precious gift and life long lasting effects of what only a love that amazing can. GAH!
Wren, good gracious. He was hot and successful and loved his family and wanted to settle down and had no interest in sleeping around with a ton of randos! Where do you find em’ like that?!? He was everything she and Ava needed and more. Even when they didn’t know how much they needed him. He was the completion to their little family. Carson and Ava where what he was missing in his life. Of course there were obstacles on both sides that threaten to derail this budding relationship many different times. Can Wren and Carson overcome all that is thrown at them and really make a go at being together?
I would definitely recommend this book! With wine, chocolate and tissues.
My cr8zysockbookblock blog wrap up for this book! ⭐⭐️⭐️⭐-This was a wonderful second chance romance. It was sweet and perfect and had some great secondary characters. I loved little Ava 🔥🔥🔥- This had some definite sizzling sweet scenes between the H and h! 🌪Cliffhanger Warning- No Cliffy! Sweet HEA for all to enjoy!
This is the first time I've read a book by this author and this book is written absolutely beautifully. This book is the first in the Coastal Carolina series. I would highly recommend reading this book.
BOOK 1= Selfless. BOOK 2 = Fearless out 23rd January 2020
This book is told from different points of view of the characters which I always like. This book is told in two parts then and five years later.
Carson is a young girl studying for her degree. She has a close knit loving and supportive family and parents who are still so in love, and with 2 siblings. Carson is a woman who hasn't had boyfriend's before or has any experience with boys so when Maddox shows her some attention she's very nervous but also welcomes it. He's very charming and starts stating general knowledge facts. Which works like a charm.
Maddox meets Carson and they have a very fast paced relationship. Maddox is a very positive, very polite young man who is going through an awful time, I definitely don't want to give away any spoliers. Life has other ideas and throws a lot at these two young people.
Wren comes in to Carson's life and changes it and at this stage is everything she needs, but she is struggling with feeling of guilt. Wren is an architect and is building her a new house he's very patient, caring and supportive.
I really liked these characters they are written beautifully and I definitely wanted to see where there story led, I was really rooting for them and their second chance love.
This book had my emotions on a rollercoaster and is very raw, is heart breakingly , realistic and traumatised. There is a lot that goes on and you better have your tissues handy. This story did get a tad predictable at the end but this story was told so true and real it had you desperately needing to see what happens.
This author has a beautiful writing gift and I can't wait to read book 2 in the series.
Thank you to the author and publishers for allowing me to read a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received a review copy before release for an honest review.
Selfless (A Carolina Coastal Novel Book 1) by Kelsey Cheyenne
This is a 2 part story. It starts when Carson is 18 and meets a guy in college, Maddox. The first 30% of the book is their story. I skipped this part of the story because goin in you know Maddox ends up not surviving. He has cancer and on the day of his death, Carson goes into labor and delivers her daughter, Ava.
Part two is where I started reading and even not reading part 1 I still cried a bucket over Maddox dying. In this part we meet Ava and Carson 5 years later and she has bought a house and Wren is her architect on the house.
Wren is the male hero in this story and Carson is the female heroine. Their names constantly drove me a little crazy because I always think Wren is a girl name and Carson a boy name and here it was so opposite.
Something else to keep in mind is that Carson only ever dated Maddox and when he died she took care of her daughter and has not dated until Wren asks her out. My point is she is very immature in relation to the whole boyfriend/girlfriend thing. So at times her behavior was really immature. As to Wren, he wants a family and to find love and he falls for Carson pretty much right away but she has ALOT of baggage and she confuses him on whether she is really ready for an adult relationship and love. Added to that he never tells her that as his client, he could be fired if they date.
I mostly enjoyed this story. On one side it was sad and I cried in a few spots. But Carson's immaturity drove me a little crazy too. I loved Wren so much and I loved that he wanted a family with Carson and is so in with her and Ava.
This was a lovely story but get the tissues because you will cry at parts of this story.
It always seems Kelsey is able to make me feel strong emotions in her books. She did it again with Selfless. I was taken on an emotional roller coaster with this one. I went from smiling wide, to reaching for a tissue to stop the intense flow of tears, to giggling, and back around again.
Sometimes it is hard for me to believe someone can have two soulmates in one lifetime. Maddox just seemed so perfect for Carson - and he was! He was so unexpected, so charming, such a perfect first love. Their young love made me smile - but it definitely broke me. I was crying in Part 1 so much. The loss she felt was so real, so relatable, so raw. I think, as hard as it was to read, it was written very well. It wasn't fair what happened to Maddox. It wasn't fair that Carson fell in love so deeply, so fast, and was left with such a huge hole in her heart so abruptly. But life, cancer, isn't fair.
I never thought she would be able to replace that love. I didn’t want the second chance at love to be forced. I continued on and it was written so perfectly. Wren was unexpected. Wren wasn’t so charming at first, but he weaved his way into her heart (and mine). He was the perfect man for the job - and he won me over. I was most definitely rooting for them in part 2 and I just loved the ending. Happy tears that time!
This will break your heart, but Kelsey will be able to piece it back together. Enjoy this book!
A beautifully written emotional story - get a least one box of tissues ready - If any of you have seen the film 'Love Story' your know what I mean!
Maddox who knows he shouldn't speak to Carson on the first day of college but he can't help it - if there is a thing as love at first sight it happens for these two. Shy Carson the good girl with the good grades wasn't expecting handsome Maddox to want someone like her but he does and as the two full deeper in love the secret Maddox is keeping can't be kept a secret any longer - live can be cruel and good people are taking away to soon!
Fast forward 5 years and 25 year old Carson is now a single mother with own business and is having her dream home built. Wren is given the job to take over the architecture of the built and the two's first meeting isn't exactly friendly - Wren focused on his job working long hours to prove himself doesn't have time for relationships or even friends but the more time the two spend together the more a spark begins to flow. Carson is torn between her love for Maddox and for the first time since his death feelings for another man - what should she do? what would Maddox want her to do?
I really loved the fasted the Kelsey Cheyenne included Maddox in this book - it did cause ugly crying on my part but it was so worth it !
There’s just something about stories like this that get me every time. I don’t know if it’s because the story line hits close to home, or the fact that their love story is just so tragic. It can possibly be a little of both.
My heart hurts for Maddox. The life he never had a chance to experience was sadly taken too early. Not to mention, the daughter he never got to meet, seriously left me so emotional. It was just all so consuming. However, I did like Wren for Carson and Ava. Sometimes it’s hard for me to read second chance stories because I always get so attached to their first love. But I feel that Kelsey Cheyenne did a great job with the transition between the two. She didn’t make you feel that one love was more than the other. Carson was lucky enough to experience two true loves in her life ! In the end, I am truly happy that Carson and Ava both found what they needed in Wren to complete their H.E.A!

Great book. Selfless is actually book one in this series. However, i read it second, but that didn't take away from anything. I enjoyed this book.
Talk about a heartbreaker. This is a single mom story, but not like any you have ever read before. It was sweet yet achingly sad as well. I enjoyed the push and pull.
The characters were amazing. I loved them! It was good to get the backstory after meeting them from skipping ahead to book 2. The heat was great as well. I also loved the writing style and pace.
Overall, I loved this story. I was beyond glad I went back and read it after book 2. Take a shot on this one.

What a story! This is a really good second chance story. It's nicely developed and well written. The characters are great! This is a very emotional journey for Carson. She found her first love, had a whirl wind romance, only to loose him. He tragically left her but luckily she had little Ava. Several years later she meets Wren. The first meetings are not really good. However, they must work together. This story is a must read! This is the first story by this author I have had a pleasure to read. I cannot wait to read more of her work.
This was a good story that went through a lot of emotions. It was sweet, sad, heartbreaking, and heart mending. It was about falling in love for the first time. It also has a baby involved, which I love, and a deep loss. Carson having to grow up so fast as a single, young mother, but at the same time it's almost like she fell into her success. I liked that they were both needing someone to love, yet Wren got a package deal. It was slow burning, and I think patience given to Wren to deal with Carson's loss was enough, but I think little Ava fell in love with him first.
Cheyenne tore my heart out with this one, the beginning was tough to get through but she certainly has a way of giving you love with heart ache and sweet moments all mixed in.
This story of Wren and Carson is totally the best bits of what love is truly all about, taking the life experience with the new territory and loving someone for what they have been through that makes then who they are and what it truly means to accept someone warts and all..
Truly a rollercoaster that gave me everything I want in a great read. A+++, can't wait for more in this series.
Wow, this is a emotional heartbreaking story with Carson losing her first love Maddox when he passes away with cancer on the very day she gives birth to their daughter Ava. Five years later she meets Wren who is building her home and he wants to settle down with a family and he can only picture that with Carson. Loved this sweet story that has some ups and downs if only Carson can open her heart to Wren.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Right from the start Kelsey Cheyenne hooks you. She found that perfect meetcute line that just grabs your heart, and whether you want it or not, you are in for the journey. Selfless is a book that will make you feel and perfect for a New England Day like today. Grab a blanket, a cup of tea, grab your tissues and dive right in. Just be warned, there is a high likelihood of not being able to put it down and also, to having your heart go through all the emotions and feels you could imagine.
This story is a tear-jerker. Prepare yourself for the onslaught of uncontrollable tears. I really didn't think I would be able to make it through with all the heart-clenching emotions that this story gave me. Its beautifully written. It deals with alot of realistic elements that hit so close to home. This story shows you what can ultimately bloom despite such a tragedy. You'll love this read, I know I did!
Carson and Maddox meet in a college and fall in love. Then tragedy strikes and all the plans changed. Carson starts her own business and does her best to live. While planning her new house she meets Wren. He’s going to help her get house of her dreams. Carson has been single for a while and Wren is a handsome but will she act on it? Can she let Wren in to her heart?
4.5 Stars This is such a good book. Boy did the beginning of this one ripped out my heart. The tears really flowed. The second part put my heart back together. There are parts that really warmed my heart. I loved Carson's little girl Ava. She is precious. I lived Carson and Wren. Wren's first impression is less be desired, but he quickly redeemed himself. This is a must read!
