Desperately Seeking Roommate

WANTED: A ROOMMATE

Requirements

1. Don’t be a smoker. That’s gross.
2. Don’t be a jerk. I have no time to deal with your mood swings.
3. Clean up after yourself. Is it really so hard to put dirty clothes where they belong?

If you meet these qualifications, call me.

Sincerely,
Desperately Seeking Roommate

When I put the ad in my university’s newspaper, the last thing I ever expect is for the star football player to respond.

From what I know of him, Abel Russo is a womanizer and an absolute jerk.

Sadly, he’s the only thing stopping me from being evicted by my annoyingly gleeful landlord.

It should be easy enough—there’s no chance we’ll fall for each other. But then he gives me lingering looks, and I might just be looking back.

All I wanted was a roommate, but I’m about to get so much more than I bargained for.

Oh my goodness this was so fun. Do you ever read a book and you smile through almost the whole thing? That’s what happened when I read Desperately Seeking Roommate. This is my second book by this author and I have loved both, though this was much lighter than the first one I read.

Lou’s rent went up and she needs a roommate- quickly and desperately. Abel needs a place to live for his senior year of college. He answers the ad and its fate. Abel is ‘Mr. Popular’ and Lou is just an average college student. But they become fast friends and Abel is the best of the best. He’s not just a football player and popular guy- he’s a great friend, sweetheart, and a good brother/uncle. Lou was wonderful as well. She cracked me up, along with her two best friends. I love a funny heroine.

This is friends to lovers/forced proximity at it’s finest. I laughed out loud, swooned so hard and fell in love with these characters. The miscommunication toward the end was frustrating, but that grand gesture was pretty great and made up for it. After two big wins from this author, I definitely need to read all of her back list. I loved this one so much!

This is a cute and quick read that features the roommates falling in love trope. Abel is a football star, and Lou is just a regular girl. I loved how she was plus sized and her and her best friend spend a good amount of time eating or talking about eating.
There are some cute parts to the book, but the novel itself isn’t too memorable. It is, however, a great escape. That said, the epilogue was divine, and I loved the nod that it makes to something that happened earlier in the book.

This story was just too sweet and cheesy. It wasn't for me.
Also, I hated that the girl talks all the time about her weight, claiming she doesn't care that she isn't skinny and should probably lose some weight.. I felt like she kept saying that because she was trying to hide how much it affects her. Maybe, I would have believe it if she didn't bring it up every five paragraphs.

I loved this story immensely!! Lou needed a roommate so she put an ad in the college paper. Abel was tired of partying and wanted to buckle down his last year of college. Fate brings the two together in more ways than one and the journey was sweet, funny, and sexy.

This specific video review will be included in the August 2019 wrap-up.

*Note. I received an ARC via Give Me Books Promotions and this is my honest review for Desperately Seeking Roommate by Micalea Smeltzer.

Sadly, this book wasn't for me, therefore, I could give it only 2,5 stars.

Let's first look at the positives:
+ Abel was a great love interest and such a decent guy that I couldn't not like him :)
+ There were some sweet and cute moments between Abel and Lou.
+ The very ending, that is Epilogue #2, was sweet and just a wonderful ending that made me smile.

Unfortunately, that was all the positive I can talk about, now let's look at the things that were not so good:
- Lou. What can I say? She was just too rude and disrespectful at times, unfriendly and unsocial, kind of a judgemental bit*h. She was too much obsessed with food, as there was just way too much obsessive talking and references to food. There were some good things about her too (like the way she loved and accepted herself, and her quirkiness) but she just annoyed me too much to see past all those negatives.
- Plot. There was too little of actual plot or just interesting events or anything at all, also there were some unrealistic scenes, cringy and eye roll worthy moments. I was so very bored.
- Miranda, Lou's best friend. She was a good friend, however, she was just a little bit too much and some of her actions were a bit unrealistic and irritable.
- Cringy public scene. I never like those public heart-felt apologies and makeups. They can be done in private and be sweet moments, not some over the top, eye roll and cringe worthy (this just happens way too much in romantic movies and books).
- Boredom. I must say again that I was just bored for the most part of this book. I wanted to DNF it a lot because I just didn't care one bit for Lou or anything that happened in the book.
- Disappointment. I must say I expected it to be funny, sweet, steamy and swoony. But that was not what I got. I was bored, annoyed, irritated and just very disappointed.

But if you enjoy contemporary books and don't get annoyed by obsession with food and rude heroine then you could enjoy this book. However, this was just not for me.

All the tension to melt you into a puddle? ✔
All the feels to warm your heart? ✔

Author cherry popped and what a way to do it! Micalea Smeltzer is brand spanking new to me, though I own most of her books already and now I'm questioning why I haven't read her sooner. But I can assure you whatever rock I've been hiding under, I'm officially out and ready for so much more.

Desperately Seeking Roommate had everything (I mean every little thing) I love in a college romance... a beautiful love story that was real, flawed, relatable and undeniable in every single way.... with two brilliant characters and one journey you won't soon forget! Plus, this book wrapped up beautifully with not one but TWO epic epilogues.

Lou needs a roommate... like right now so when Abel responds to her ad, she decides to leave it to fate with what happens next. What she or he doesn't realize is that this single moment and decision to be roommates is going to forever change both of their lives in major, major ways.

He's tired of meaningless hook ups and she's just living for herself now. He's popular with abs to die for and a sweet personality that was totally unexpected. She's funny, quirky, loyal, and so honest to a fault at times. They are total opposites in a lot of ways and shouldn't work on paper yet the more time they spend together and become friends, lines and boundaries begin to blur from roommates and friends to so much more for Lou and Abel.

Enough angst and tension between them to have you turning the pages to get all the answers and allllllllll the explosive chemistry to keep you hooked until the very last word, and did I mention fanning yourself from the steam? And always remember to never let anyone treat you like the yellow starburst because you totally are the pink starburst!

Stop what you are doing right now and add this book to your TBR list! Desperately Seeking Roommate will definitely be on my top reads list for this year and maybe a contender for an all time favorite of mine! And y'all, if I could give this brilliant romance a million stars, believe me when I say I totally would.

I highly recommend this book.

Stop what you’re doing and go ahead and get this book. Seriously, don’t even hesitate. Just do it. When I read the blurb I was all on board to try out Micalea Smeltzer for the first time. Now that I’ve spent my evening laughing so hard my sides hurt and losing my heart to the world’s swooniest hero I’ll be reaching for every book she releases. I don’t even want to say I devoured this, that’s not big enough. I world champion speed eatered this book.
Lou is like my soul sister living within the pages of a book. She’s got this irresistibly quirky, weird, hilarious and charming personality that makes her someone you love automatically. I have a practical harem of book boyfriends, but now I’m starting a new list of book girlfriends and Lou is number one on it. And don’t even get me started on Abel. No man should be that hot while also being that sweet. It’s like Micalea Smeltzer wanted all men to suffer by creating the perfect man in him. *side eyes my husband*
If you want to laugh like crazy, lose your mind over the most perfect book boyfriend ever and enjoy major cravings for pizza and starburst GRAB THIS BOOK!

I haven't read Micalea's books in a while, but something about this one drew me in from the start! And I wasn't wrong, this book is simply amazing!

Quirky, hilarious and unique, Desperately Seeking Roommate isn't your typical college romance.

Lou is in a league of her own sassy, fun and down to earth. I loved every minute of her story. And don't even start me on Abel. That guy is SWOONY.

If you like college romances and romcoms you NEED this book!

I really struggled to get into this one. The first part of it seemed really slow and it took the enjoyment out of reading it. I managed to carry on, and admittedly, the story picked up, but as I had felt such a disconnect at the beginning, I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I probably should have.

A sudden raise in rent makes it necessary for Lou to get a roommate ASAP. But she wasn’t expecting Abel, the sexy and popular football player, to answer her ad. After a quick meet up to get a feel for each other he moves in. The attraction is there from the beginning but they both have to fight it because they’re roommates now. But as they get to know one another the attraction only grows. Why fight it?

Ok so my breakdown of the book:
I liked the writing. It paced well while the romance builds up steady without any crazy leaps.

The banter was alright. There were a couple times that it took me out of the book with its immaturity but not too bad.

Side characters were good especially Tanner I would have been happy if there were more scenes with him.

Abel was great. Good character growth and an all around good hero.

Lou, on the other hand, I did not like. I’ll explain that in a bit.
This is the first book I’ve read from this author and honestly if you replace the heroine it would have gotten a solid 4 stars. My only other complaints are that the antagonists were really one dimensional. And their presence in the book was solely to create a little drama in the relationship that would have been stale without it. They were pretty much plucked strait from a cliché YA novel and put into this one for extra eye roll factor. I think I need to try another of her books. I don’t doubt her ability to tell a good story this heroine just didn’t do it for me.

So let’s talk about Lou. I was excited about reading a curvy heroine until she started throwing shade toward other body types. No need to promote body positivity for the curvy heroins AT THE EXPENSE of anyone else there’s room for everyone to be happy with their self. Pet peeve of mine. But really it was constantly things like this: ‘We’re normal-sized—I’m sorry your media standards are candy-cane stick thin. I’d rather eat them than look like one’.. Now rephrase that and sprinkle it all over the book. It came off so strong it brought to mind the good ol’ line “The lady doth protest too much”
I think she was supposed to come off as funny and quirky but it read more as hostile and overly defensive. The kind of girl that will yell “It’s because I’m fat isn’t it?!” But it’s wasn’t. So she just made a normal situation awkwaaarrrd for everyone. And the other person is pretty much obligated to pay her a complement to soothe her insecurities ,that she denies having in the first place. Plus everyone is hitting on her and telling her she’s hot so I don’t get her unnecessary defensiveness. Then the times that she would have had every right to put someone in their place she decided to meekly walk away instead. I don’t get it.

Sad because I really tried to like her until I just gave up. She does get a little better in the second half of the book but by then it was too late for me. Don’t get me wrong. She has some redeeming qualities and she has depth to her but overall she didn’t come across well.

Desperately Seeking Roommate is a rom com that accurately describes the situation Louise (Lou), the heroine, finds herself in after her landlord raises the rent. Lou puts out an ad in the university paper for a roommate ASAP and gets a response from well-known campus footballer, Abel. These two have a solid connection at first sight and agree to be roommates. From there, the forced proximity pushes them to form such a cute friendship which turns into something more when they can’t help but act on the simmering sexual tension that’s been present since they met.

I enjoyed this so much. Abel is not your typical asshole jock. He is sweet, loves his family and loves Lou and all of her quirks. Lou is one of the funniest heroines I’ve ever read about. I love that she was plus-size and that we got that representation, and that she owned being plus-size and never made it seem like a bad thing because it’s not! There’s nothing wrong with having curves and enjoying good food😂. Even when guys had made comments about her weight in the past, Lou always gave herself a pep talk that it was them, not her. I loved that the author never had Abel see Lou’s weight as an obstacle in their relationship. He just loves her for her and her eccentric personality and I appreciated it.

The miscommunication situation towards the end made me mad because Lou should’ve known better 😩 and she should’ve trusted Abel instead of letting her insecurities get in the way! HOWEVER, because I enjoyed the rest of the book SO much, the miscommunication trope wasn’t enough to knock it down a star. This quickly became one of my favorite reads because I’m a sucker for a roommate to lover situation and a nice guy hero, and Lou and Abel, along with Lou’s friends, were hilarious. The HEA wrapped up quickly and was exactly what I wanted to see! Definitely check this one out!

TROPES: roommates to lovers (forced proximity); plus size heroine; jock hero (plays football); rom com

Do you believe in fate? Well, Desperately Seeking Roommate was part of mine! I loved Lou and Abel. They were as sweet as pink starbursts and I couldn't get enough. The side characters were a riot too. There were many laughs, swoons, and fanning of thyself. Definitely the fun read I was needing! See, Fate!

3/5*

Well, .

Boas leituras.

I am such a sucker for a roommate novel. I don’t know what it is, but having the characters being under the same roof and their little interactions that would not happen if they lived separately just make me so happy.

Desperately Seeking Roommate, was such a great book!!! Smeltzer did an amazing job. The characters had so much life, and they were funny, and relatable. I LOVED LOU. Seriously, homegirl was my spirit animal. Wild crazy pizza loving Lou was a perfect heroine. She said what she was thinking, acted on what she felt, and didn’t let anything stop her. Abel, was perfect! I love his go with the flow attitude. I LOVED how he treated Lou. Their interactions made my heart so happy.

I adored this cute read. I think it was perfect. It made me smile and laugh. It made me giddy to see them together, and the writing was great! Definitely recommend you pick this up!!!

I have a new favourite romantic comedy, I’ve never laughed so much when reading before.

My first Micalea Smeltzer novel and I can’t wait to read her others.

Lou is one of my favourite characters of all time. I love that she’s so real and relatable and she’s a little curvy. She’s confident and knows her self worth and doesn’t listen to what the world defines as to what beautiful is. One of my favourite parts about this book is her friendship with Miranda and Tanner, they’re such great support characters.

Abel is so endearing and likeable. It shouldn’t be possible to be that good looking and lovely. I think it’s fair to say every woman deserves to be looked at the way Abel looks at Lou and cares for her.

Their relationship is certainly a roller coaster of emotions with many ups and downs throughout. I loved Abel and Lou together and I was cheering for them the whole time hoping for their HEA. Michaela certainly knows how to give you all the feels.

I really loved this heartwarming, endearing, fun and ever so funny story and I really hope Michaela gives Miranda her own book.

3.5 ⭐

It was very wholesome, Abel was the sweetest and Louise well... I like her too and how confident she was but my god she was a bit much. Authors really out there making "I love food and I'm soooo weird" a whole personality still. You can point out that she likes food once or twice but literally it's all she talks about.

There's no plot to the story, and the conflict was dumb af. The first 60% of the book was better even tho Lou annoyed me lol. Oh and there's a public scene that I almost died of second hand embarrassment.

The main character was described as quirky (mostly by herself), but really she was just annoying, kinda rude, very judgemental, and her personality could be summed up with "body positivity, pink starbursts, and food". Seriously, this book made her obsession with food half of her personality. The girl had no interests outside of eating. There was nothing interesting or compelling about her.

I will read the sequel though, mostly because it has a trope I like, and I am I actually liked her best friend (who the sequel is about)

I’ve read pretty much all of this author’s books and I always look forward to a new release from her, so I was excited when I heard about this book! The synopsis sounded exactly like my kind of read and the cover is hot! I received an ARC of this book and made it my next read! After reading, I can say that I loved this book a lot! It was very cute and funny at times! There was also plenty of romance in the plot and I loved that it developed slowly and wasn’t exactly love at first sight! The romance allowed for a few seriously hot scenes too and plenty of sexual tension! The plot also developed at the perfect pace and I honestly didn't want to put it down until I had finished it! The ending of this was also very beautiful! I had tears in my eyes as I read the epilogues because they just summed up the main characters story perfectly! The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Louise ‘Lou’ was the main female character, and in this book she worked hard and I loved her as a character! I also loved that Lou loved food because I love food too lol! Lou was also very confident, which made me happy! She was a 'bigger' girl, but she owned it and she didn't care what others thought about her! Lou also had this brightness that surrounded her and I found her such a loveable character that I instantly connected with! Abel was the main male character and love interest of Lou! I thought that Abel might have a been a bit of an ass in this book because he was hot and thought of as a bit of a womanizer, but he was actually such a sweetheart and seriously hot! I loved him a lot in this book and had a lot of respect for him! I loved the way he was with Lou too! It was easy to see his feelings develop for her and he loved spending time with her and they made such a cute couple! I loved that this book was written from both Lou and Abel's point of views! I was actually expecting it to only be written from Lou's point of view, especially after I read the synopsis, but I'm really happy that Abel's point of view was in there too! It added to the plot and allowed for a few more scenes to happen, especially as Lou and didn't spend every minute of the plot together! It helped me connect and understand the two main characters as well! I can also completely understand why this book is a standalone! I’m really sad that it is because I would love to read more on Lou and Abel and even secondary characters from this book, but the ending was left at the perfect place and summed up the characters story beautifully! I now can’t wait to see what this author is going to release next! I’m not sure what her next release is going to be, but I’ll be reading it regardless and I can't wait to know more about it! I also love the cover for this book! It’s really hot! I have to say though that the alternative cover for this book, which has Lou on it, is exactly what I pictured the cover of this book to be! I mean, I love this cover, but if I had to pick, I would pick the Lou cover lol! Big thank you to Micalea for an ARC of Desperately Seeking Roommate!

I may be old enough to be Lou’s mother, but I want to be like Lou when I grow up. She knows she doesn’t have the “perfect” body, but she loves herself and is a strong woman. She also has no filter and she’ll make you bust out laughing many times throughout the story. When faced with a situation out of her control, she takes charge and get things handled. This time, she needs to find a roommate. Her new (sleazy) landlord has raised the rent and she can’t afford it on her own. Putting an ad on her University’s newspaper, she hopes for the best, but pretty much expects the worst. Her needs are simple,
“Requirements:
1. Don’t be a smoker. That’s gross.
2. Don’t be a jerk. I have no time to deal with your mood swings.
3. Clean up after yourself. Is it really so hard to put dirty clothes where they belong?”

Abel, star of the University’s football team is tired. The senior outgrew college frat life and decided to concentrate on getting good grades, getting his degree, and doing well on the field. To help focus, he moved out of the place he shared, and into his sister’s spare room. Only problem? He can’t concentrate with his niece and nephews running around. A roommate ad catches his eye and he calls the number listed. Lou and Abel meet up and decide that they can tolerate each other enough to be roommates.
This book is so very, very good!! You fall in love with the characters, the writing is amazing, the story engaging. I didn’t want to leave Lou behind, but she got her HEA and we got a glimpse at her and Abel’s life 5 and 10 years down the road. I truly love my rom-coms and this is a new fave. I’m already recommending Lou and Abel’s story to others and getting them hooked on Ms. Smeltzer’s writing.

This book is like my freaking happy place, it was warm, funny, real, and absolutely delightful!

Micalea Smeltzer is a new author to me, but that is definitely going to change if her other books are even remotely as good as this, which I have a feeling that they are!

Lou is considered a bigger girl by skinny people, but she has never had a problem with what OTHER people thought because she knows how awesome she is. I absolutely loved this girls confidence and I wish others, sometimes even myself, could be as well! She is absolutely hilarious, but also extremely kind.

Abel, um where can I get one like him? He is extremely popular on their college campus because he is on the football team and is super hot, what no one mentioned was how freaking awesome he is.

When Lou’s rent goes up, she desperately needs a roommate fast because there is no way she would be able to afford her 2 bedroom apartment on her own, even if it means she has to have a guy roomie. Turns out Abel is in a similar situation and needs one as well and like it is ‘fate’ they are thrown together.

What happens when two completely opposite people are thrown together in a crazy situation? Well that dear readers is what you have to read to find out!

The story was amazing, the steam was off the charts, and the characters are 100% real- I absolutely recommend this book!!

PS: I received this book for free but am voluntarily reviewing it!

Firstly, I’d like to state, that this is actually a decent read for a New Adult novel.

The protagonist, Lou, was witty, quirky, and blunt. Just my kind of girl. The one downfall with her, was that A LOT of this book was constantly focused on her weight. Don’t get me wrong, I love me a plus size lead, but when it’s one of the main focuses, it kind of annoys me.

What I did like tho, was that Lou was confident with herself. In some parts, when people would criticize her, it shows the reader that even tho you’re super confident in something, we’re all human and can only handle so much, ya know.

The relationship that builds, I thought was done very well. (Considering it’s a fictional book and can only drag out so long, ya know)

I look forward to reading more by this author.

Likes:
💗 The roommate/forced proximity was really cute
💗 Loved the body positivity rep
💗 The ride or die friendships were really sweet

Dislikes:
💗 Starbursts (x41) and the colour pink (x57) were mentioned so many times that it made me want to punch myself by the end of the book
💗 Some of the scenes were really cringe to read
💗 I hated the third act break up, Lou not even taking the time to hear Abel out really went against everything she’d said about herself as a person up until that point

So Lou is hilarious and a bada*s in her own quirky way she brings her weight up several times and it seemed like a problem even when she said it wasnt. Able is the perfect roommate for her and I love how Fate keeps being brought up by both of them even when they don't know it. I love that she is babysitting and growing attached to his nieces and nephews without knowing it. These two have amazing chemistry and they just mesh well. You can tell Lou's past still bugs her and sets her off some. These two are adorable together though.

Desperately Seeking Roommate by Micalea Smeltzer is the story of Lou and Abel.
This of course is a college romance that is funny and a easy read. Lou is looking for a roommate due to her landlord being on her. Abel is looking for a place to stay to get away from his family and friends...or at least not to be 'under their feet'. Both are total opposite where Abel is into a football jock, Lou is the more into food being more of a home body I thought. But they ended up finding some things to connect over...not to mention the attraction that was building.
Overall a easy no real drama read.

If you read this as a kuroo/plus size reader roomates au like I did, then you'll have fun. Granted, the last 30ish percent is kinda too cheesy to digest (at least for me) but the first half of the book is 👌

Be warned of the constant "random american brand names" dumping in every other sentence... I swear, I have no idea what the half of the shit listed in this book even is lol

3.5 stars.

Where to start with this book? I think it’s a solid book, with a few quite large flaws.
Lou. The preoccupation with her weight, and the fact that she keeps going on and on and on about it gets really tiresome. I like that she’s strong and sassy and owns who she is but she doesn’t need to keep going on about it. It’s also contradictory because when she’s with other people all of that disappears. The doubts she has come so easily and again are at odds to who she claims to be.
I liked Abel. He’s a great character. I liked the honesty he had with Lou and she had with him.
I liked Tanner but wanted more of him. I thought he would play a bigger part than he did.

But, there’s flaws.
I’m kind of annoyed that this book is set in the same town as all of Micalea’s other books. I want a new town!
Also, this book reads very young. And why is it such a travesty to be single in college?

In all, this is an okay book.

Cute, fun and heartfelt! Micalea does not know how to write bad books. Just books that hit you right in the feels!
