- Reviewed in Australia on 13 December 2019If you've read the North Security series then you would have met Josh North. We had snippets of him but now we get to really sink our teeth into him ;)
We have this push pull with Bethany, a mysterious ballerina and, of course, the rough and coarse Joshua. He keeps pushing and she pulls back even though you can tell she wants to give in to him. It doesn't matter that she doesn't want his help, Josh is not going anywhere. It also seems that the past doesn't always stay in the past and it can and will influence people no matter how much they try to distance themselves from it. It has coloured both Bethany and Josh's lives and influenced their behaviour. Josh can be a real a...hole at times... okay almost all the time. But who doesn't love an alpha a...hole from time to time? I think a lot of the time he acts this way as a defence mechanism because he fears what will happen if he lets anyone in. There is suspense, action and everything in between. So there is something for everyone. I don't want to go too in depth because it's better when you discover the secrets for yourself.
This story felt different to Liam's but still enjoyable. I hope we get to see the third brother, Elijah, and get to enjoy his book. It would be great to see him in more detail.
- Reviewed in Australia on 10 December 2019I really enjoyed Josh and Bethany’s story. I have had a soft spot for Josh since the North Security books and he didn’t disappoint.
Plenty of chemistry, dual POV and flashbacks made for a fast paced read that had me flipping the pages. Definitely recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A slow dance of seduction
Verified PurchaseSkye Warren is one of those romance authors whose writing you recognize from just a few sentences, and her signature style also shines through in this book, co-authored with Amelia Wilde. Although like most of her books, this in a way is a tradtional romance, it also subverts typical genre expectations. It’s written from a dark and desolate place that has a dystopian feel to it. Their portrayal of contemporary society appears almost Dicksonian, especially with regard to the heroine. Like most of Warren’s other heroine’s she grew up in poverty and even though she is capable and talented, she struggles to make it on her own in a society that is still largely patriarchal, where men hold all the power. It is an indictment of this world view that still holds today, where women are viewed as possessions and ornaments, mostly only appreciated for their looks and not their brains. Usually they end up being dependent on a man to help rescue them. Warren’s heroes also mostly come from poverty, but through grit, ambition and ruthlessness they manage to claw their way out of poverty and to success simply by the power of their will. What all her characters have in common is that they are broken, either from despair, war, an abusive childhood, poverty or a combination thereof.
Audition follows this same pattern, but with an added element. Bethany, the heroine, is of mixed racial heritage and grew up in New Orleans, and though it is never mentioned explicitly, there is a feeling that she belongs to a community that still feels the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Her father was abusive and after his death she and her brother came to live with her grandmother. From a young age she always knew that she wanted to be a dancer, and though she is a talented ballerina she is stuck with a second rate troupe and its insufferable director who lusts after her. The pay is also bad, so she is stuck living in a dingy apartment with a shared bathroom.
Joshua North is the middle brother, and though he now works for North Security, he feels distant from his brothers ever since they all fled their own abusive father and joined the army. He has closed himself off emotionally and doesn’t let anybody close. But back in the day when he still worked for Uncle Sam as a special operations officer he met a young Bethany and fell for her, hard. Naturally, he pushed her away. But now, that Bethany has acquired a dangerous stalker, he makes it his business to insert himself back into her life, all under the pretense of protecting her...
I liked how on a meta-level the authors started off each chapter with a small historical tidbit, chronicling the founding and development of ballet in general and the difficulties female dancers, especially women of color faced in getting their work and artistry professionally recognized and how the authors tied this history to Bethany’s personal struggles of professional fulfillment. So this romance manages to be both, conventional in some ways (the progression of the love story to a happy ending) and unconventional, in that it connects the personal stories to larger cultural and societal issues, which adds reflective depth to it. So, overall 4 ½ stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Five star story .
Verified PurchaseBethany & Josh’s story Bethany a ballet dancer and Josh who used to be In the military now part owns North security with his brothers . Although they have very different careers one thing that they do share is their similar upbringing ,both their fathers were handy with their fists . Josh and Bethany’s brother Caleb met in the military but now Caleb had turned his hand to the illegal activities of selling drugs and government owned weapons to anybody who wanted them . The story flits from present to past ,both Josh and Bethany have had this love hate relationship from when they first met eventually the two give into their passions . Question is can Josh keep Bethany safe when she starts to get unsettling letters and do the pair have their HEA. 😉?. It’s a good story although the flitting back from past to present spoiled it a bit for me I would I have liked to have read it in two separate parts , but that’s my own personal preference , it still warrants the five stars I’ve given it .

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the couple through the years
Verified PurchaseJosh's story is to similar to his brother Liam's both fall in love with a teenage girls, they are much older than. Once the girls are 21 and woman they take their virginity, both men had an abusive childhood and don't want or know how to love. I loved who cherished Joshua treated Bethany and protective he is of her. He has wanted her since he saw her dance at age 16 , he watched over her for years now she is a woman. They want each other and submit to having sex, I find in unrealistic he is surprised she is a virgin , he had North Security falling her and reporting back to him . Once he takes her virginity he isn't gentle with her and keeps pushing her beyond her limits, that's not love its abuse. After their first night together he takes her back to her unsafe apartment and says it's over. Then he goes back to get her and say he doesn't want to need or love her but he has to have her. I feel for the woman in this story because the men are born killer and though they love their woman it's more about their self gratification . They protect and spoil the woman but will the brothers be whole with the messed up pass and no real clarity about what a loving healthy relationship looks like.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Good it's Frightening
Verified PurchaseSkye Warren's books really are so good they are frightening. I usually end up binge reading them staying up all night reading obessively and trying not to wake my husband everytime the narrative makes me moan out loud. Audition was worse than my usual binge fest. I didn't get up to go to the bathroom while reading. It was that good. Josh North is swoon worthy. Bethany is a joy to read about. I was biting my nails the whole way through praying for their HEA. I have not read Liam North's story and I am so getting it today. This is a must read if you like Skye's books. Really it's a must read if just love a really awesome romance.
