Recovering from a broken relationship, Emma Mitchell moves in with her best friend. Her life is quiet and uneventful, just how she likes it. Little does she know that the events of the following months will change her life forever.
Famous Hollywood actor James McNair is a renowned womaniser with a penchant for partying and hitting the tabloids for all the wrong reasons. When a night of partying a little too hard means he finally has to take stock and reevaluate his lifestyle, a week away from the flashing lights of Hollywood is just what he needs. What better place to hide than in his childhood home in Edinburgh, Scotland?
When the old friends are reunited, feelings resurface and sparks fly. But James must keep the pretence of his new persona until the premier of his biggest film in his career. He just has no idea if he'll be able to keep his feelings for Emma under wraps until then.
Sometimes it takes more than damage control to find a happily ever after.
Eva King was born in Spain. During her teenage years, she moved with her mother to Scotland, where she fell in love with the culture and one of its men. She now lives in the Highlands with her husband and two kids.
What could be better than childhood best friends reuniting to find love? Make one an A-lister Hollywood star in a KILT!
Emma is struggling with her lot in life. She recently experienced a hard breakup and a career as a shopping clerk.
James is a famous movie actor who spends his off set time womanizing and making a mess of his life.
When James pushes the power to be a little to far with his antics, they "ask him" to get his act together. After a recent interview where James recollects about his first kiss, James decides to look her up...Emma.
As the story progresses, it makes me think King got her inspiration imaging the Outlanders cast member, Sam Hueghan finding love with his child hood sweet heart, while Jane is based on Caitriona Balfe. Well at least that is how the characters evolved in my head. No matter the inspiration, I flat out loved DAMAGE CONTROL.
If you are looking for a strong contemporary romance with flawed and realistic characters, Damage Control is a marvelous choice!
Thank you to Eva King for sharing her work with me. This is my honest and voluntary review.
My Rating: 5 stars Written by: Eva King Print Length: 387 pages Publisher: Hot Tree Publishing Publication Date: May 27, 2017 Genre: Contemporary Romance
Eva King has written an appealing and delightful story utilizing a friends-to-lovers second attempt at love trope. Her writing is engaging, witty and endearing just like her characters. I really look forward to reading more from this new-to-me-author.
I’m a sucker for Hollywood romance stories and an even bigger sucker for second chance love themes, especially when the two involved have been childhood friends. I found a good balance of passion and conflict without a lot of unnecessary drama — something I relish from time to time. The storyline is not new, but it is sweet, sparkling and satisfying.
James shared an enduring connection with the feisty little redhead who lived next door from the time they met as children and became best friends. One shared kiss as teenagers and what felt like the beginning of something deeper and different. An unexpected interruption by James’s father and things change. POOF – overnight James is whisked away from Scotland to the United States with very little explanation, leaving a heartbroken girl behind.
Seven years have passed. Nowadays James McNair is a Hollywood A-lister bad boy with trouble nipping at his heels. A little break from the glitz and glam might be in order. And the timing might be perfect for a trip back to Scotland and the girl he left behind. Time for some damage control.
Some memories refuse to be forgotten—
Emma Mitchell is the best friend he left behind – all grown up into a gorgeous redhead that he once secretly crushed on. She’s the everyday single working girl sharing an apartment with her best friend and living a modest life. Of course, she’s recovering from a heartbreak dealt by her last relationship – which might have something to do with her self-confidence problem.
Reconnecting brings its own set of challenges. Leftover misunderstandings, broken relationships, renewed attraction and twists that could prove fateful for this couple.
It’s always an added benefit to gain the story told from both sides. In dual POVs, James and Emma unravel the tangles from their past in flashbacks of their childhood and embark on a second chance to redefine their relationship and perhaps make it an always and forever happily-ever-after.
A solid and well-cast group of secondary characters bolsters the storyline with interesting plotline devices. From a different vantage point, they help in revealing personal information by adding additional layers of interest about not only our main characters but themselves. Romance readers are most always happy to see a few of the extra special secondary characters follow-up with a story of their own, and there’s plenty of material to work with here.
The element of surprise is just enough to keep it interesting. Prepare to have your heart stolen by Emma and James. This couple’s love story crackles and sizzles from start to finish in a heartwarming finale!
My thanks go to the author for the ARC of this book.
I must be honest and say that I hadn’t heard of this author before this book, however I will now.
Damage Control is a second chance and all round sweet contemporary romance. It has all the elements to make it a sweet read. You have your smoking hot hero and your bumbling but feisty when it counts lead female and you have the background characters to fill it all in. The plot isn’t original really, however it is genuine and I adore books that make you feel happy and this did just that.
James and Emma were childhood best friends, only James had a little crush on Emma. However, Emma, not seeing James as anything but a friend, goes out with the school’s resident playboy and all round douche. It isn’t until an incident occurs that Emma sees James in a different light. They kiss but are interrupted by James father who lets it slip that they are moving. Feeling heartbroken Emma goes home, the next day though James has gone.
Fast forward 7 years. James is now a Hollywood actor, loved by millions and earning millions. Emma works in her local supermarket, she lives with her friend and they lead a simplistic lifestyle.
Living up to his Hollywood playboy lifestyle leads to an incident in which it makes James stop and think. He remembers his first love and that leads him to go home to Scotland and find Emma. They begin to fall in love but having a relationship that is always in the spotlight is hard and trying. Can love find a way to trump all that? Well kiddies, you’ll have to read the book and find out.
For the first time reading this authors work, I’m really impressed and will definitely read more. The way she tells the story is endearing and makes you want that happy ending. It makes you feel light but it’s not wimpy, there’s elements of hardness. It’s just one of those books that after you’ve read, you smile with contentment.
Eva King will be one author I look out for in the future.
It appears that destiny was set for Emma and James when they played weddings as children. Time and circumstances took them apart. Now James is a famous actor who is out of control in his personal life and Emma is still the girl next door.
James' career needs some damage control and some space. He has never forgotten Emma. She has always held a special place in his heart. When he needs time out, Emma is the logical place for him to go and his heart takes him there. Fame is not all it it cracked up to be and fake relationships are used as damage control. Will Emma stick with James throughout or will it be all too much?
James keeps things very close to his chest, probably a reaction to fame, but it causes Emma to feel insecure and uncertain as to where she stands.
This was a great read that refreshing in every way. The web was well weaved and kept me hooked throughout.
Emma works as a cashier at her local supermarket, she's just moved into an apartment with her best friend and she's finally starting the get over the heartbreak her last boyfriend left her with. James is infamous and he's living his life out of control. His life is one great big party full of controversy and constant damage control.
This is a second chance at romance that had never really gotten started the first time. Growing up as neighbours and best friends there was an attraction that wasn't realised as teenagers before James was gone. Their story together is one of hidden attraction, friendship and misunderstandings. Bad rich boy trying to go good. I enjoyed every word, every twist and turn.
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.
I have to say this is a new author to me.. I really enjoyed this story of second chance... Emma and James were just perfect together. This was one of my favorite story lines That I just fall for every time
Even though this is the first for me with this author it definitely wont be my last...
Emma was so very good. I loved James also. Characters were great. I would of loved more substance to each of them so it didn't seem so much of a draft. So that's good...I just wanted more!!!
James is in need of some damage control. Being on of the newest "hot" stars on the scene, he's taken full advantage of the perks to being a celebrity, but his team thinks he's taken it just a little too far. So James decides to take a step back before going into full on "Mr. Charming" in the public eye... charity events, a fake girlfriend to make everyone think he's settled down. He never expected when looking up his old childhood friend, that he would still have the same feeling for the pretty redhead who lived next door, that he had a terrible crush on as a teen and was juts as beautiful now as she was then.
The last person Emma thought she would see when visiting her parents was James McNair. What was he doing here? Wasn't he a world famous actor now? What could he possible want to do with a girl who's biggest aspirations was being a cashier at the local supermarket. Although she's still mad at him for moving off to America and never trying to reach her again, she was happy to see her childhood friend.
As they spend the week together, James realizes that the feelings he had for Emma are still there. He needs to tell her that he tried to keep in touch, that he thinks he still has feelings for her, but he also knows that she doesn't deserve the scrutiny of living in the limelight. But he's not leaving this time without having a way of getting a hold of her.
I loved James. Once he straightened up and saw Emma again, he was sweet and funny and I loved the chemistry between him and Emma. The two were meant to be and I loved the prologue and the flashbacks to when they were kids. I am a sucker for second-chance romance and this one is sweet without a lot of drama, which I loved.
This is the first book I've read by Eva King and I definitely will be adding more of her books to my TBR,

Ah, my favorite type of book; a book where one character is trying to recover from either a bad publicity stunt or a bad reputation and falls for the proverbial girl-next-door type. These stories are always so fun to read and provide such a sweet romance story to them. It was a perfect to read when you need a little pick me up.
This story didn’t disappoint. It was a great read and had incredible characters. The story line flowed well and the details were great. These characters were real and their emotions pretty raw. It was a fun read and one easy to lose yourself in. It was fun to imagine the scenery and easily done.
It seemed to be a pretty quick read and one I enjoyed. It was definitely the right book for the right time as I needed something easy to lose myself in. This one fit the bill! I definitely recommend reading this book, it will be one I keep as a re-read, for sure.

Emma's life is not turning out the way she planned as she is recovering from a brutal breakup with her boyfriend, has moved in with her best friend, works as a cashier and lives a quiet life.
James is a famous actor however he needs to clean up his act or his career could be in jeopardy. He feels a return home to Scotland and to see his first love will get him back on track.
Seven years ago, Emma and James were best friends and looking at talking their relationship out of the friend zone until James moved away with his family. When they reunite their feelings are as strong as ever but is there a happy ever after for a small town girl and a sexy celebrity?
The two characters are opposites in lifestyle and confidence but they balance each other and together they work. This is my first book by Eva King but it won’t be my last. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Damage Control is a fun, witty, almost a second chance, romance. Not given an opportunity to explore what what there as teenagers, James and Emma meet again, years later as adults.
James is a Hollywood bad boy, and Emma is living with her friend, and almost underachieving. She doesn't do anything to advance her career and and is shocked that James remembers her. She is lively and fun to read.
James is a sexy hero. He goes after what he wants, he's subtle, but in a strong way. He's trying to fix his image, and keep Emma close.
Overall this was a fun, intriguing read. I loved the premise and it was just an all around refreshing read.

Maintaining an image in show biz is hard, specially if your portray yourself as a womanizer and then try to clean it up. In his last debacle he decides he is going to his friend Emma, someone he had real feelings for. A woman that he knew he could trust to keep him straight until the debut of his show. Emma, broken harted and living with her friend, she never thought she would be reunited to her childhood friend and now big time actor James. Now the two are thrown together in a farce of a relationship to clean up his image. Can they keep their true feelings under wraps? A second chance romance, filled with hope, passion and love.
I want to say that Damage Control is a second chance romance but really it's about two old friends who have a chance at potentially more...
What can you really say about James? He is a total womanizer and you love to hate him.
What can you say about Emma? She is on the rebound from a long term relationship and trying to find herself again.
One's afraid to open there heart... One can't open there heart...
Will the two be able to overcome the obstacles in there way to make a relationship work?
Eva King takes you on a journey where you learn the ins and outs of James and Emma. There likes, dislikes, insecurities and more. Grab your copy today and find out!
Emma is enjoying the peace and quiet after her last relationship, then James turns up, he’s an A List movie star and she can’t help but wonder why. Even though he left when they were younger, she’s still happy to see him, even curious as to why he found her. James has made a mess of his life; he’s seen as a womaniser and been told to clean up his act or else. Remembering his childhood kiss with Emma, before he was suddenly moved countries, now he’s an A list actor and can’t help but wonder what happened to Emma. James knows that he still feels the same for Emma, he knows there’s something there between them, but can he get her to see the truth and not what the media shows the world.
Well, this was the was the first book that I've read by this author and it certainly won't be the last. This book was a really good read. I will admit the beginning was a slow burner for me, but one the two characters reconnected I think I smiled all the way through reading it. I loved James' character. I laughed with some of his antics at the beginning. I could visualize him running through a bust street.. Naked! 😂 Emma was a sweetie and she grounded James in his busy career. It was a pleasant story to follow and I look forward to more by this author.
This book is a lovely read and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I loved Emma, so normal, working in a supermarket, getting over heartbreak and moving in with her bestie. Famous Hollywood heart-throb, James, who grew up with Emma in Scotland, and her secret crush. How they re-connect and the funny scenes and wonderful expressions that they all come out with are totally refreshing. This is one of those books that I smiled throughout reading. I look forward to reading more by Eva King in the future.
This book made me want to jump on a plane and hightail it to Scotland ASAP! A friends to lovers over a span of years made me wish my neighbor growing up was like James. Emma is very easy to relate to and I liked seeing their struggle even after they get together. James can show up in a kilt any day ;)
A nice easy read, very enjoyable. I just wasn't sure why the need to keep the secret between them. If there was trust in the relationship, then surely he would trust her to not say anything. Still, I enjoyed the book.

Damage Control was the first book I have read from this author, and I absolutely loved it! James and Emma owned my heart. James a hot swoon worthy actor and Emma an ordinary girl best friends since childhood- lose touch when James has to move away with his family...... but not before sharing a kiss that would remain with them even if they didn't remain in each other's lives.
Losing touch for seven years, two best friends reunite- both have a love so deep for each other that they do not know how to unfold it without losing each other and their friendship. A few snags come along the way, but their love will prove it is greater than it all. Definite must read! ❤️
I am so excited that I happened upon this author, or rather she happened upon me. She agreed to beta read my first novel and I couldnt be happier. This is a very sweet friends to lovers story. I enjoyed it from begining to end. Emma and James were wonderful relatable charachters. If you are looking for a fast enjoyble friends to lovers romance with the added bonus of a "super Star" I suggest you read this book. I can't wait for more from Eva King!
Damage Control by Eva King is a standalone contemporary romance with a side-order of second chances. Told in dual POV between James McNair, the Hollywood A-lister that emigrated from Scotland to the US in his teens, and Emma Mitchell, the girl he left behind, his best friend, and biggest crush.
The story is well-written and well-paced. As the tale unfolds we will jump here or there ahead a week or month or more putting the timeline progression of their reacquaintance and attraction into a much more realistic point than some insta-love stories (which I also don't mind).
James is flawed. Not much, but he has his issues. Emma is not as confident in herself as she could be but together their flaws lessen and their value of themselves and each other grows. Some nice moments with the secondary characters that left me intrigued enough to wonder if they may to get their own book. Enjoy!
