Devil You Know (Butcher Boys Book 1) Kindle Edition
Living on the streets, I made some hard decisions to stay alive. I signed a contract with the devil, and because of that, I choose to live alone.
But after listening to my neighbors fight every night for years, it’s finally gotten to me. Now I’ve gone and done it - I’ve broken my only rule—never get involved.
I want to save the beautiful woman next door with the sad eyes from his abuse. I want to take her away from all of this, but what do I have to offer when my hands are stained with the sins I’ve committed? How can I offer a broken woman peace and safety when those two things don’t exist in my world?

About the author

For as long as she can remember, Max has always had a love of the poignant and thought-provoking side to life.
Which probably stands to reason why each of her books take the reader on an emotional rollercoaster that not only promises twists, turns, and suspense but a heart-wrenching journey where her motto holds true:
Love never comes easy.
When she's not lost in an alternate world - fuelled by coffee and the odd sneaky bowl of chocolate (preferably M&Ms) - she spends her days as a wife to a dedicated husband, mother to two rambunctious boys, and an obsessive petrolhead enjoying the muscle on display at the local car shows.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 April 2015I enjoyed this book. It was a refreshing one to read, where it did not focus solely on sex and physical appearance of the characters but rather the issues they face in their day to day lives. I admired the fact that the author addressed the issues of domestic violence, neglect and sorrow of loosing a loved one. I felt that it was important to learn from this book that issues such as domestic violence and neglect may not exist in our homes, but if we identify it else where that we should do something. And not bury our heads in the sand like the good old Ostrich and help where possible.
A lot of interesting and topical lessons can be learned from this book.....I have and you can too.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 July 2016I’m going to give this a 4 Star, although to be truthful it should possibly be just 3½ because the author seemed to lose her way as the book progressed.
I’m struggling to write a review without revealing any spoilers, but I’ll do my best. In the beginning it was a cracking read! Two broken dolls; One capable, forceful and robust, and the other fearful and apprehensive. Can they assist each other in the healing process? And then again, which one of them really is the bolder of the two? Which one the most fearful? And who’s the real powerhouse in this relationship?
I’m jumping ahead of myself here. The book begins with scenes of domestic violence that are so well-written that they inspire outrage. She explores the reasons for staying in an untenable situation because it is familiar, and for some reason that’s preferable to the unknown. So much so that once Jane finds freedom she seriously considers going back. And if you want to find out whether she does or not, you’ll have to read the book.
Although the unknown is safer ….. so far …. the beatings from her husband actually seem more desirable because they’re the norm with nothing to rock the status quo. If she doesn’t please him – at the dinner table, in the bedroom – then she’s going to get a beating. And it’s all her fault.
Good writing. Very good writing. So much so, in fact, that I almost wish the author had stuck to this scenario. Not that I particularly enjoyed reading about Jane’s beatings, but more that I feel these are issues that need to be explored and understood.
But the story moves on, and it’s here that it starts to get a little bit repetitive. Malice won’t open up, Jane can’t trust him completely, he gets annoyed when she asks too many searching questions, she’s prone to mood swings, but that’s understandable, and the saving grace in all this is her relationship with her loyal dog, Rocco.
And that’s how the story goes for most of the book. But then it seems as though Max Henry suddenly wakes up, realises she hasn’t really written anything for the last 50,000 words and decides to liven up the pace. There’s a bad scene, the tough guy’s not as tough as we’re led to believe, the boys are out for revenge … and that’s it.
SPOILER ALERT ….
They never get their revenge. The book just stops there on a ‘happy ever after’ note with far too many gaping holes in the plot.
It’s all a bit daft really.
Is it worth a read? Yeah, it’s worth a read, but for my money it hasn’t been properly thought out.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 April 2015This is a pretty good read. It has a strong storyline with characters you can empathize with. The author has tackled difficult issues with a deft touch and the emotions she describes are very believable.
I liked the characters, though at times I found their lack of communication irritating, so wrapped up in their own troubles they repeatedly misjudged each other.
I really was routing for them to get their happy ever after, however the story feels unfinished, incomplete.
At Times disjointed, yet I did enjoy the book, I would definitely read more from this author.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 January 2016I did enjoy reading this book, if I hadn't it would have been a DNF like a few others before this, having said that it could have been a lot better if the characters storylines had been more in depth. Missed opportunity for sure.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 March 2015I had quite high hopes for this book but unfortunately it was just ok for me. Don't get me wrong there were bits that were really good it's just there were bits I found boring too.
This is the story of Jane and Malice told from both POV's. The book begins told from Jane's POV who is in a domestic violence relationship- where this part is not over graphic, it does contain some sensitive scenes but I felt the author portrayed these well. When neighbour Malice steps in to help Jane, this is where their story together begins.
Unfortunately I found Malice quite childish at times and far too much to-and-throw going on between the two for absolutely silly reasons. And when you find out what Malice does for a job, it's not as dramatic as it's portrayed throughout most of the book- these are the reasons why I could only give it 3 stars. For me I wouldn't read more in the series, but if you wanted to give it a go, this one ends with a nice HEA and no cliff- hanger for the couple.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 August 2015I am so glad that the blurb contained the warning that their will be domestic violence in this as it was at times hard to read. I felt like I was reliving some painful memories and found it at times traumatic especially emotionally even though this has not happened to me. After I read it I felt cathartic and cleansed and uplifted even though the person have falls in love with and is also her saviour is malice. He has his issues and his "job" but you do sense the vulnerability of his heart as he feels so deeply for Jane. Really well written and beautiful ending.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 January 2016Sorry to say rather disappointing story. Nothing seem to be explained in-depth,why where they working for the cartel. How did they get into that. The dad waited 17 years to get in contact with him, yeah not one for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, emotional and powerful
This book touches on the subject of Domestic Violence and the emotional toll it takes on the person and those around.
So if you don't like to read about this sensitive topic, hot sex scenes then this book is not for you but you will not be disappointed.
Jane is married to the devil Dylan.
He cheats on her, isolates her, and beats her.
The abuse has been going on for so long that she has checked out and has been able to prepare herself for the beatings.
One night, Dylan goes after Rocco, Jane's dog and only reason for not killing herself, and they are outside when she screams in attempt to get him to stop.
Her next door neighbor jumps the fence to protect the dog from the beating/killing.
The next day Jane meets hot neighbor Malice.
She goes to him after the next beating and he takes her the ER.
Malice takes her away from Dylan to heal, start a new life, and to protect.
Malice has a past that he wants to keep hidden but the more time he spends with Jane, the more he is falling.
The more of his past coming out, he is scared that she will run.
With the death of one of his best friends, the truth starts coming out.
Will she be able to love him despite of his past and his profession?
Will he look at her as a woman and not damaged goods?
Will they get a HEA?
Will Dylan get whats coming to him?
This is a must read and Max Henry does not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark romance!
This book is very well written. You get deep insights into the characters and their thinking. The beginning of the book is so overwhelming with the picture presented of the violence Jane experiences at the hands of her husband. It's very difficult to read while at the same time you're captured by Jane and her thinking and resilence. Jane has incredible insight into herself and others and so loving and compassionate. Although Malice isn't perfect, he rescues her when no one did and loves her the way she needs. It's a very good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A story of finding who you are, with a side of love
This was my first Max Henry book and I can say it will not be my last
I really enjoyed Devil You Know, and the cover WOW
When it starts Jane is a broken woman, beaten down by the man who was meant to love her, cheerish her and protect her forever. Enter in Malice, the man who will love her, cheerish her and protect her forever; who himself is a broken man. Together they help each other heal and become the strong people they were.
I will definitely be buying more from this talented author
