When a man buys my body, I shut off my emotions, close my eyes, and force myself to push through. No thinking. No feeling. No breaking apart.
Soon the debts will be paid. Soon I'll scrub their cologne and sweat from my skin and walk away from this business for good, pretending it never happened.
For now, my body is not my own. For now, I belong to any man who can afford me.
But when Derrick LaClaire asks for a night with me, I turn him away, even when he offers to pay triple what I earn per hour. I need his cash, but if I let him touch me, I know I'll break every single one of my rules. And he'll discover who I really am.
LaClaire Touch is a steamy full-length, standalone novel with a happy ending.
**WARNING: Due to sexual situations and adult content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18. **
Dori Lavelle is a mother, wife, and sucker for happy ever afters and mint chocolate. Hand her a great romance novel and a mug of hot chocolate and she'd be one happy woman.
This book had so much potential but I felt let down on too many points to rate it any higher than 2.5 stars (3 stars on Amazon) and describe it as "yeah, it's o.k."
The technical writing (i.e. could I read it, did it make sense, was the grammar correct) etc was excellent, the plot flowed well and I loved the idea's behind the book. Brooke was well written but Derrick was a bit cardboard cutout, although he grew on me as the book progressed. It was decent enough for me to bother to finish reading the book, although it was a close run thing.
I had 3 main 'issues' with the story.
1 - The biggest thing for me was that I didn't believe that Derrick and Brooke were in love. Although they did have history from high school, it wasn't like they'd had some huge romance then, and they only had the briefest of encounters now when Derrick PAID for sex with Brooke/Ruby! There were no passionate, emotion filled encounters just sex and then sex again.
2 - Whilst he was supposedly obsessing over Ruby, Derrick committed the second biggest problem for me when he had sex with other women - including another prostitute. OK not cheating as they aren't together but not what I want in a romance novel. Whilst I can accept Brooke's choice to be a prostitute, I'm couldn't really respect the hero using them for his main 'source' of sex. Not to mention as a young, good looking and extremely rich man he would surely not need to pay.
3 - The final thing was that important parts of the plot were rushed through and then 'filler' scenes were used to bulk the story. The shocking revelation - and boy it was a good one - is revealed and resolved in the final two chapters of the book, then we have an epilogue vaguely set 'several years later' when actually there was the potential for more chapters on Ruby and Derrick living and coping with the unexpected change in their lives.
I'm not offended by the prostitution. I am disgusted by the outside of the relationship sex. Is this nit a romance? Why would I want to read them having sex with other people? It doesn't make any sense. None. And to have not just that type of sex within the time frame, but to also have actual sex scenes between them and other people? It's gross. It ruins the effect of the eventual relationship, and it plain doesn't belong in romance books. Nothing else about the book matters because it's ruined by that.
Since when does a person who hasn’t graduated high school get to practice psychology in 3-4 years? It would take 4 years of undergrad, then 3 years of grad school. Which doesn’t seem to be the case in this story. Too many unbelievable parts for this one.
Brooke Rayner is a survivor. That’s what she does after she was kicked out from her home and had to drop out of school at 16. Nowadays, she is Ruby at The Mirage, the place where both clients and prostitutes can conceal their identities while interacting. It pays her bills, keeps her anonymity and she’ll be doing it until she can get out of debt and has enough money to start college. Derrick LaClaire is an adrenaline junkie. The youngest LaClaire brother will do anything and travel anywhere for that high, the one that helps him forget the nightmares of his life. When he meets Ruby, he becomes obsessed with having the girl who ran away in the night and comes back to get his fill, but things will take and unexpected turn when she calls out his name… When their worlds collide and Derrick desperately wants to know why she disappeared and took that path, Brooke will have to confront the demons from her past and unearth secrets she’d rather keep hidden. This is a story about a second chance with a big twist. Short and fast paced, but a little over the top for my taste. I totally understood Brooke’s character and her backstory, but can’t say the same for Derrick and his attitude about life and the consequences of your actions. IMO, the book was okay and easy to read, just not my style plot wise.
3 stars *An ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review*

LaClaire Touch by Dori Lavelle is a steamy, sensual romance of self discovery of oneself. Apart of the After Hours series, Derrick is noticed prior in other books and we finally get to see his story unfold in this second chance romance.
Not in the best of predicaments, Brooke Raynor makes her living by selling her body to paying men. Yep! Not the best way to make a life, but losing her mother early on and her step-dad abandoning her, she has no one else to depend on. Back in the day she used to be able to count on her high school crush, but that ship has sailed when he crushed her heart!
Derrick LaClaire, rich as sin who loves to travel as much as he loves to have sex, finds himself at The Mirage, a house of desires. Not expecting the night to bring him face to face with a blast from his past! Derrick is one not to condone relationships, but when he is reacquainted with Brooke in a compromising way, he can’t let go of her. Surprised at how low Brooke has succumbed, he’s willing to help her in all things, but are their too many lies/secrets to be shed?
A splendid second chance romance reuniting between two characters who deserve healing, especially Brooke! Dori Lavelle described her characters well from past to present times which was easy to follow along. Also, her writing of the plot was engaging. Great book that I recommend.
Oh Dori my heart, I loved this one. Once again I couldn’t put this book down as soon as I started reading I was hooked. I am not going to give any spoilers. This story follows the LaClaire family and this one is about Derrick and oh boy I think I am in love with him ha ha. he is not the relationship kinda guy but he wants one night with Brooke but she turns him away as once he touches her she will break all her rules and he will know who she really is.? Brooke is a prostitute when she is with a man she shuts of her emotions and feels nothing it is her job, she does it to pay all her debts off then she will walk away like nothing ever happened, her body is not her own it is which ever guys can afford to buy it. I really loved Brooke and when things come to light you just want to hug her. She is such a good character. It is not an easy road for these two but enjoy the ride so good. If you love Dori’s books pick this one up too it is so worth the read.
LaClaire Touch by Dori Lavelle is the second book in the After Hours series. Though the stories do not build on the previous one, some spoilers are revealed as the stories progress. I recommend that they books are read in order. Brooke has hit bottom, but she is trying to improve her situation the quickest way possible. She hates that she sells her body and works hard to mask her appearance. Everything changes when a man from her past is suddenly one of her clients. Derrick LaClaire is an adrenaline junky. He can't stay in one place for too long before he gets bored and needs another fix. When he meets Ruby, he is thrown for a loop. He always gets what he wants, and he wants her.
This book sucked me in within the first chapter. There were so many questions brewing and I needed to find out what/why/how as quickly aa possible. This book is an emotional rollercoaster written in dual points of view. It was well executed and a joy to read. ☆☆☆☆☆ 5 Stars!
Giving 5 stars to this book was the easiest I have done for a while. The author touches on a sensitive subject and does so brilliantly. I love a book that can grip you from the start and this book definitely does this. So well written and the pace of the book was perfect. I wont reveal any spoilers but I can say that I was not expecting that ending ! Highly recommended
Brooke has been through so much heartbreak but she is determined to get her life on track and pushes for her dreams, even if it means working at The Mirage entertaining clients, it revolts her, she hates it although she is treated well and the money is good, its temporary, she tells herself this every day. Brooke is a strong independent woman and knows what she wants for her future. She has hit rock bottom and the only way can be up, she is dealing with her past and trying to move forward from all the hurt when an unexpected client is about to turn her life upside down and bring the past right back to the present.
Derrick is love them and leave them kind of guy, commitment is not for him, always chasing the next thrill he never stays in the same place for long. His loyalty to his family though is his first priority, he can never be thankful enough that the LaClaire family adopted him. He hasn't had it easy and loosing his parents really hit him hard. Before he leaves for Spain he chases a quick thrill at The Mirage, little did he realise how this was going to change his future. " Ruby " ran from him ! He has never had a woman run from him especially one he is paying for !! He wasn't pissed off like he thought he would be, he was intrigued and knew he would be returning for her again.
Brooke and Derricks story is full of heartbreak, hard truths and confessions. Derrick knew he never treated woman well but Brookes reaction to him makes him think twice about what he has done to her. Brooke cant forgive him for what he done but Derrick really doesn't know the full extent of what he has done. The truth is about to hit them both hard.
Every single time, this author brings me to deepest crevices of my emotions. Words are not enough to describe how you feel when you finish one of her books.
The story of Ruby/Brooke is one that captures your heart from the very first chapter. You feel the raw emotions, and disparity Ruby/Brooke must of felt as she coped with the reality she knew as her life.
Ruby/Brooke was one of the strongest women you'd get to read about in print. Brooke held secrets that were so deep, you felt her anguish, and her pain. However, at the same time Brooke's desires, and determination to rise above was deeply inspiring.
Ruby/Brooke has an accidental encounter with her past, one that changed the course of life as she lived it. Enters Derrick.
At first glance Derrick LeClaire radiated a vibe that had you unsure of his true character, but as the storyline developed you found yourself drawn to Derrick like a moth to a flame. Irresistible, sexy, and exciting. The bad boy image, with a good heart.
Derrick was determined to delve into his past, to find truths about the girl he once knew. That's when you began to see a different side of him that simply melted your heart.
Derrick was incredibly irresistible, and the dynamic between him and Brooke was undeniable. A second chance romance at its finest.
This story will have you in tears. The deceit, the lies, the truth, the passion, the ultimate betrayal, the incredible resolve, the love, and and ending you won't see coming gives this book a five star rating!!!
I won't give hints of the ending, but it's a made for TV movie in my opinion. Simply amazing!
The story follows Brooke Raynor, a young woman in her mid twenties working as a sex worker, struggling to make ends meet and hopefully get a better life for herself. Losing her mother at a young age and being abandoned by her stepfather when she needed him most she leaves the only home she's known and the boy who broke her heart.
Derrick LaClaire is a filthy rich playboy daredevil who loves nothing more than traveling the world looking for his next big thrill oh and sex. Relationships aren't for him so on the way to the airport and his next adreneline rush he finds himself at The Mirage, a house of ill repute. And who should happen to be his bed companion for the evening, non other than Brooke. Setting eyes on her next client Brooke runs, 'how did he find me?' she asks herself after coming face to face with the boy who broke her heart, Derrick LaClaire.
While it was a good story of young lovers unite, it wasn't as risque as i hoped. But hey that's just me, it might be different for others. I hope you enjoy if you decide to read.
When I first met Derrick in Bryant's book I Instantly liked him. Maybe it was his rush for adrenaline, I'm not sure but I definitely wanted more of him and his story. You would need very know that he was adopted because the Laclaire brothers are so tight they don't treat each other any different and I love that about them. Once I got to know more about Derick he came off as an ass to me. Like he just used girls but then again girls knew what he wanted and he paid well for it. I guess it was his high school days that rubbed me the wrong way. Then again it's high school it's ment for fun and for some notches on there belt. It's funny though how someone can do 180 for the right person. It will always the take the one. And yes I most definitely believe that. Brooke's story hurt my heart, she's such a girl I give her so much credit.
Brooke is a prostitute, but she has no choice. Without a high school education or GED, she can't get a good paying job to help with her debts. She didn't want to sell herself, but she knew once her debts were paid, she'd be done. Until Derrick LaClaire walked into her white room. Then her world was turned upside down. She hates him and never planned on seeing him again.
I loved LaClaire Touch, the story line may have some sensitive subject matter matter, so please be aware of that. Both Brooke and Derrick have issues throughout the story that have to be dealt with. The characters were both strong and that is why they butted heads so much. I am giving LaClair Touch 4.5 stars! It was a wonderfully written book and I have loved Dori Lavalle's work since her Fatal Hearts series.
This book!!!!! I do not have the words to express how much I loved this story! I was drawn in and hooked from the very beginning and had to read it all in one day because I could not wait to see what was going to happen. I was on such an emotional roller coaster while reading this and was heart broken at times for what Brooke and even Derrick had to go through. There were so many twists to this story that I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next.
This book was definitely able to be read as a stand alone but I loved all of the other characters too and now I can't wait to get my hands on the other book in this series.
These LaClaire boys will take your breath away. Now it is Derrick's turn.
He was popular and a player since high school. No woman could resist him. That is how he met Brooke, the beautiful girl that was always in the library. He set his mind to have her and worked for it.
Now years have passed and when they meet again, they circumstances are such that he cannot forget or ignore her. There is more to her story and he must find out.
This an entertaining and angsty story with a happy ending. The trick though is the journey to the "happy". These LaClaire guys will make you swoon!
I am voluntarily reviewing this book. I thank the author for sharing a copy of her book with me.
This is the second book in the series. Yes I think this one should be read in order. It isn't necessary. But I think it helps knowing all. This book is about Brooke. Wjen we first see her in the book she is working as a prostitute. She has a lot of debt she is working on paying off. In walks Derrick. Derrick is one of the LaClaire brothers. He was adopted into the family. But is every bit apart of it as the others. Brooke is not exactly happy to see him. He was apart of her past. He feels something different towards her without knowing why. This book has alot of emotion in it. Very well written. I enjoyed it.
Brooke is a prostitute she hasn't had a good life and wants to pay of her debt so she can better herself. One time Brooke ends up with a client from her past. Derrick can't believe Brooke is a prostitute and will do anything to help her. But there is more to there story lots of heartache and lies. Both alike in so many ways. Can they heal each other? A great second chance romance 4/5 stars ****Reviewed for Sweet & Spicy Read provided for a voluntarily Advanced Reader Copy of this book ****
This was such an emotional story. I love the LeClaire brothers, and this one kinda breaks your heart. But there's also love and heat, and a lot of putting your heart back together. They are both strong, intense people, dealing with their own demons. And there's a twist you don't see coming. Once I started, I didn't stop until I was done. You definitely gotta read it!
This is the first book by this author that I have read, and I enjoyed reading immensely. The second of the After Hours Novels, follows Brooke and Derrick six years after high school. Brooke trying to stay head of her debts works in a brothel, meets Derrick by chance as her customer. Can they get past the pain and the secrets of their past to move forward to their future. I very much enjoyed this book, and will be reading the first book as well.
Derrick is an adrenaline junky who lives a lavish life but the loss of his parents still haunt him, Brooke is a strong beautiful girl that's been living with her heart broken for the last six years . Fate brought them back together and there's so much passion between them . Beautiful story and I can't wait for the next installment !
Ms. Lavelle does it again with another fantastic read! LaClaire Touch is the second book in the series, can be read as a standalone, about the LaClaire brothers. This one is Derrick's story. Derrick LaClaire is the youngest of his siblings. He's the daredevil. No challenge is to big. Every since the death of his parents in a plane crash,he' been an adrenaline junkie. He feels living life to the fullest means feeling invigorated and alive through experiences that most would find scary. His life is busy and full,so he has to time or desire for a relationship. He visits a brothel,The Mirage,to get his sexual release. Brooke/Ruby has had a hard sad life since the age of sixteen. Going from homeless shelter to homeless shelter. Finally not finding another solution she turns to prostitution. She's determined once she's out of debt she'll go back to school. Get her degree and start her life over. One night during work she walks into the room where her client is waiting for her. She takes one look at Derrick LaClaire and runs out. She recognizes him from her past. He's a painful reminder to her. Derrick takes one look at Ruby before she runs out on him and is instantly not only attracted to her but he also feels a connection to her. From here starts the journey of Derrick and Brooke! I'm not going to say anything else about their story so I don't give anything away. But what I will say is that it's not only a sexy, steamy read but it's also emotional and heartbreaking sad at points in the book. So have tissues on hand. Ms. Lavelle does an outstanding job with the writing of this emotional gripping book. It's an intense story. That's filled with happiness, sadness, forgiveness, redemption and hope. Hope that a heart can be healed. Hope that the future will be brighter than the past. Most especially hope that love will conquer over hate and pain. Beautiful book with amazing strong characters and a storyline that is unforgettable! I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy
LaClaire Touch: An After Hours Novel by Dori Lavelle was such a hot and steamy surprise. A second chance at love story with a twist. Can the playboy and the down on her luck girl find a way back to each other?
Brooke Raynor does what she must to survive. She has no one but herself to depend on. When a man buys her body, she shuts down and goes through the process. She has a purpose. No breaking apart for her. This will end, but for now she does what she has too to survive. Than Derrick LaClaire comes back into her life and asks for time with her body. But it’s the last thing she wants, because she knows one touch and she will be done for.
Derrick LaClaire does not do relationships. He enjoys traveling looking for adventures and fun nights. As a rich man, he does as he pleases, in and out of the bedroom. When he ends up at The Mirage, he finds himself drawn to a woman that wants nothing to do with him.
Brooke takes one look at Derrick and wants to run away. The boy who broke her heart years ago. Her journey has been so hard, her story broke my heart. But she was determined to make her life better. Derrick was a man who was used to getting what he wanted. He was strong and very determined.
When Derrick sees Brooke again, he wants to help her. But there is so much history and secrets between them. Can they find a way back to each other? This is a story of healing and rediscovery. A different kind of second chance at love story. It was one steamy read with strong characters that will draw you in. I believe this may be part of a series, which I have not read, but did not feel as if I was missing anything.
OMG!! My heart was shattered, and then put back together after reading LaClaire Touch. Dori writes with such emotions, that I feel each emotion the characters go through.
LaClaire Touch is book 2 in the An After Hours Novel and tells the story of Derrick and Brooke. Derrick who craves dangerous adventure decides to make a stop at The Mirage for a laid, before running with the bulls in Spain. While Brooke is trying to make ends meet by selling her body at The Mirage.
Derrick becomes obsessed with Brooke (Ruby as known at The Mirage) and wants to know more, but what he finds out is shocking to know. Brooke is trying to keep it together as she knows Derrick from high school, but can she hide for him or does Derrick find out the truth. What other secret is Brooke hiding?
Second chance love is one of my favorite's genres as I get experience the emotions of love and passion between the characters. I wasn't disappointed as Dori took me on a roller coaster ride with Derrick's and Brooke's story.
If you like passion and second chance love story this book is for you and I highly recommend picking it up to read.
