LaClaire Nights (After Hours Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 458 ratings

This is one of those sleep deprivation books that has you wishing you didn’t have to work in the morning! I found this story to be a wonderful combination of charming, intense, and hopeful. Goodreads reviewer ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Some marriages last a week, a month, or a year. Others last a lifetime. Mine ends on my wedding night, ten hours after the exchange of rings.

Our marriage vows shatter when Dustin Cardwell, the man I saved myself for, looks me in the eye and tells me I failed between the sheets. Our marriage ends before the ink dries, before the scent of my bouquet fades, before the candles in our honeymoon suite burn out. Three months later, I'm divorced and working as a massage therapist on the LaClaire Cruise Ship, headed for the Caribbean. I'm desperate to get away, to lick my wounds in private. I'm not looking to be another man's disappointment.

Until Bryant LaClaire invades my space and makes my panties melt. The moment our eyes meet, he makes it clear I'm his girl of the moment. Drawing me in with his charm and good looks, he promises to repair my sexual self-esteem while satisfying his own needs.

A few LaClaire nights is all he can give. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s an offer my body can’t resist. But when my heart lures me into the heart and world of a man who carries a devastating secret, I know I’m in danger of returning home with more pain than I'd left with.

LaClaire Nights is a full-length, standalone novel with a happy ending.

Dori Lavelle, is a mother, wife, and a sucker for happy ever afters and mint chocolate. Give her a great romantic thriller and a mug of hot chocolate and she'd be one happy woman.

Growing up, Dori read a lot, and when she wasn't happy with a particular ending, she wrote a different one, just for herself. The time has come for her to share the stories she cooks up inside her head.

    I enjoyed reading this book.
An instant attraction for both Bryant & Grace. I loved their connection but both have been hurt by past relationships.
Some hot scenes but also plenty of emotion.
This is the first book I have read by this author & I hope to read more in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cruise your way into an enjoyable story
Reviewed in the United States on 21 February 2018
"LaClaire Nights" is light and fun to read. There is a nice mix of good and bad characters, mostly good ones. Of the bad characters, one (Grace's mom) improves with time and the other (Dustin) is, well, someone you would like to punch...repeatedly. The remaining "bad" primary character is not so bad, just emotionally wounded.

I enjoyed reliving life on a cruise ship with interesting ports and people. The fact that Grace, one of the two main personalities, works on the cruise ship could have spoiled the story for me--after all, cruises are for pleasure. However, for the most part Grace likes her job as a massage therapist and I just put myself (mentally) on the table receiving the massages. Works for me.

There is a balanced mix of romance and steamy scenes. Bryant, the wealthy cruise ship owner transitions from playboy to romantic while Grace goes from sexually naive to confident making the romance portion particularly appealing and important to the story line.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cruise into the possibility of love
Reviewed in the United States on 16 February 2018
This was a sweet, light read. Well edited.

Grace's wedding night was memorable - just not in a good way. What's starts with promise ends with heartbreak. In order to breathe and heal, Grace takes a job on a cruise ship. There, she meets Bryant, a fellow staff member. Little does she know that he actually owns the ship. Bryant is a consummate playboy - always on the prowl for his next conquest. He recognizes that he wants Grace, and that she will require a bit more work than normal. He begins a slow dance of conquest - designed to begin and end with the cruise. Grace finally gives in - embracing the opportunity to live life on her terms and build her shattered self-esteem. Will Bryant open himself to a possible future? Or will he hold fast to the playboy life? What is it exactly that holds him back? Will Grace shake off the troubles of her past?

Nothing here is really deep. Just a nice bit of feel good to pass an afternoon. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love on the open sea

Grace saved her virginity for marriage, but marrying Dustin her childhood friend was a mistake. He wanted a virgin porn star when he was a 2 pump chump. Devastated that her marriage lasted barely 24 hours and Dustin started sleeping around before the divorce was even final she takes a job on a cruise ship. Enter Bryant LaClaire, wealthy playboy and owner of the cruise line but Grace just thinks he's another employee initially because they meet in the employee gym. They immediately "zing," and Bryant is thinking wtf?? Grace is experiencing bodily responses she's unaccustomed to. Despite her apprehension, she starts seeing Bryant and learns exactly who he is. 6 weeks at sea, a no strings attached ring, what could possibly go wrong? I really adored this book. Grace's evolution to becoming her own woman, standing up for herself, exploring herself was invigorating. Bryant's hang ups with past trauma was the reason for his playboy ways, but there was something about Grace that made him want more than just a fling.

This story moves too fast. In the span of a year Grace Anderson is an innocent, naïve Christian woman who is 26 years old who marries her "longtime" friend, Devon. Their marriage abruptly ends on their wedding night due to her failures as a lover. Then 3 months later she finds herself employed on a cruise ship involved in a shipboard illicit love affair. What evolves in the story about Devon's character and the gossipy small town they grew up in doesn't jive with how these two people would ever marry or how she would become the "social outcast" in the community. It's almost impossible to believe that she would accept Bryant as a lover. He is shallow, a player and makes it clear that he wants sex with no strings attached.

Grace Anderson grew up with a strict Christian mother in a small Arizona town. She went on and married a pastor’s son on the expectations of a perfect match and a HEA. When things didn’t go as planned and she found herself divorced and the most recent source of the town’s gossip, she took a job on a cruise and hightailed out of there to try and rebuild her lost self-confidence.
Bryant LaClaire is a consummate player and, whenever he travels in one of his ships, has the pick from the women on board, staff members or not. When he finds his attentions directed to insecure and innocent looking Grace, he’ll do everything in his power to convince her that NSA sex is exactly what she needs to cure her heart’s ailments.
This is story about 2 people with family and relationship baggage who come together and overcome great difficulties. On the plus side, it’s fast paced and easy to read, but to me, that was the highlight of it all.
I had a hard time relating to the characters, their stories and the way they handle a lot of things, especially Grace and the ex-husband’s drama. It was a story with great potential that, IMO, got lost in the execution.
