Deviate

Hard. Painful. Tragic.

This is what my life has become - purgatory. Floating in the middle of what could’ve been and what’s never going to happen.

My past dictates my future. Every step forward, guarantees ten steps back. Regret entwined with an addiction to bad decisions, living in the moment, and neglecting the consequences has become a way of life.

Ignoring all the warning signs, I didn't see him coming. He was supposed to be a distraction, a bit of fun amidst all my chaos. But Elliot Ramzy turned out to be all that, and so much more.

Reviewing on behalf of Amo's Book Corner.

Deviate is a story centred around Courtney and Elliott and both apparently have their own issues. They have slept with each other before, on numerous occasions, but they have never actually been in a relationship together. In fact, Courtney doesn't do relationships. What's the point when you'll only end up losing them anyway? But another thing Courtney just won't do is open up to Elliott about the real reason as to why she doesn't want to pursue a relationship. It isn't until she discovers that he has experienced a very similar pain that she has that she feels ready to divulge the information to him - but is it too little to late? Will she lose him forever or will he understand?

Aside from Courtney and Elliott's story, Deviate also highlights the very real raw pain and hurt that is experienced by loved ones who are left to carry on in the aftermath of suicide. It is written in such a way that it had me gripped throughout. It is such a deeply sad but beautiful story and though I did shed a few tears, I am so happy that I've read it. It's very eye-opening and is definitely worth reading. I am happy to give this a 5-star rating!

If there was even a tiny thought that Valentine’s ability to nail the emotions of her characters and make you relate on a visceral level was mere fluke – then Deviate blew that thought to shit.

She did it again, and this time even more so. I felt the entire spectrum of feels in this brilliantly written book. While taking her time when it matters, this book never once dragged and flowed so easily that I couldn’t believe I’d reached the end already. (Minus the break I had to take when emotions ran too high and I was ready to reach through my kindle and throttle someone.)

Court and Elliot are perfectly imperfect in every way and while you will probably cry, probably scream in frustration, probably swoon, and probably gasp at the brilliant lines this author delivers – you will no doubt love this book as much as I did.

Deviate was my first book by Marley Valentine, I'm captivated by her words, the detail the emotion and the heartbreaking storyline had me addicted.

Marley has a way of capturing each of the characters and the emotion behind them. In Deviate we get the story of Elliot and Courtney who me meet in Devastate - this is their story and it's an emotional roller coaster of Love, Laughs, Loss and Life. I think the world needs more Elliot's he is drop dead gorgeous, patient and now one of my favourite Book Boyfriends.

All Elliot wants is for Courtney to lower the walls she has built around herself so he can see the real her. What is she hiding, why is she holding back? Is she worth the wait or was it good while it lasted? Could these two souls heal each other? All of these questions and so much more will be answered throughout the book.

"She taught me you can't love without life and you can't live without love."
This scene was quite a powerful and emotional one, it was Raw,Emotional, Intentional and Soul Soothing.

I cannot recommend Deviate enough it was such a fantastic read, prepare yourself for the tears.

For Courtney life has been hard, painful, and tragic. So when she finds herself in an arrangement of convenience with Elliot, she figures why not? No feelings or attachments. Just a way to satiate lust and blow off steam. But when feelings begin to creep their way into their arrangement they both decide to end things before things get messy. But with a little friendly interference on both sides Courtney and Elliot being to realize that maybe, just maybe, they want more regardless of the complications.

This book was beautiful and painful. It tears your heart apart a little and glues it back together. It shows how life can be cruel and ugly, but that there is always some beauty to be found. That when you find the one who can see the beauty through all the pain and find their way to you, that's who you hold on to and don't let go.

This was my first Marley Valentine book and it truly won't be my last. When reading this book I shed a few tears and felt the characters' loss--and even some frustration as they struggle to make their way back to each other--but I was also filled with hope.

Definitely pick up this book and hang on for the emotional ride. And be warned you might lose some sleep because this book is unputdownable, but so worth it!

Marley Valentine sure knows how to write stories that tug at your heart strings. Deviate was emotional and very well written. But what I loved must about this book was that it touches on real life situations that some people live with everyday but have no idea how to coupe with them. But it also shares an important message that with a little help from loved ones you can remember that you are not alone.

Courtney is a strong and confidant woman on the outside but on the inside she is broken, scared and hiding behind a wall of hurt, anger and regret. She is the type of person who uses sarcasm and sex as an outlet whenever a touchy subject presents itself.

Elliot wears his heart on his sleeves. He knows what he wants and exactly how to get it. Beside when it comes to Courtney. With her, he is at a complete loss. And no matter how hard he tired, Courtney just wouldn't open up to him.

That is... until it was too late and she had no choice but to fill him in on all her closely guarded secrets..

Will Courtney still have a place in Elliot's heart or did he finally realize he was fighting a losing battle from the very start??

Living after losing so much seems impossible at times. But is going through the motions really living?

Elliott and Courtney have a physical relationship. It started out of convenience and a way to just sate the body’s desire. But once things get to be too much like feelings, they split. But mutual friends butt in, because well that’s what friends do. These two may find that they want more than just the physical.

This story will make you cry. The heartache and sadness will break you. But life isn’t always pretty. And finding the one who can see all the ugly and know the truth, but still love you, is where true beauty is found.

Elliott and Courtney’s story will draw you in. The constant two steps foward and three steps back between these two will frustrate you at times. Their chemistry will keep you flipping pages! And their struggle to be better and find their way back to living will give you hope.

This story pulled all my heart strings. I was torn apart by Courtney and Elliott's situations. Their lives have been affected by tragedies that have left them still dealing with the aftermath a few years later. It's heartbreaking.

I love how supportive and loving Elliott is towards Courtney.
The subject of depression is hard and has made me more aware of how short life can be.

The other characters in the book just make the story stronger and give more depth to the storyline.

This is my first book by Marley Valentine but I will be on the lookout for more.

Not one to be missed!

Marley Valentine's writing is exciting, sophisticated and thrilling. This book took hold of me from page one and kept my attention all the way through. The storyline is raw and heartfelt, the struggle to overcome tragedy so real as are the characters. Deviate is a spin off novel and can be read as a complete standalone. Courtney and Elliott are originally featured in the novel Devastate. Highly recommended!

I accepted an ARC in exchange for an honest review

*Spoiler FREE*

I read and loved book 1 Devastate and this 2 instalment too. I loved the characters, particularly Elliot. I really felt for him, his character came through and really resonated with me, his own outlook on life, and him as a person really drew me to his character. I admired his strength after losing the brother he never met and his kindness for taking care of Evie for so long instead of himself when it was his loss too.

I didnt connect as well with Courtney, but I understood her, she was a well-written character and I think Marley captured wonderfully and how out of control, trapped and powerless she felt in her situation.

I really enjoyed seeing more of Evie and Lior in this and how far those 2 characters have come since their own journey in Devastate. There was alot of sweetness in this between Elliot and Courtney and it was amazing to read their story and get to know them even better. Lovely read and I hope to read more Marley Valentine books soon!

4 Stars to Deviate by Marley Valentine.

This book was intense and emotional. The truly only happy moments were in the end. That said, while there is grief and devastation, there was also hope. Where you wouldn't think there could be a happy ending, there was one. Marley Valentine has a talent for writing books that leave you breathless not to mention thoughtful. She makes you appreciate what you have in life even if you think it could be better.

Deviate follows Marley's previous title, Devastate. Deviate can definitely be read as a standalone, however it is connected to Devastate. by characters and some circumstances. Both books are written to gut you emotionally and do a pretty god job of that.

Elliot and Courtney.......
Both these amazing characters are introduced in Evie and Lior's story. They are actually a big part of it. Elliot and Courtney have had a casual relationship because that was all each was looking for but when feelings started to come into play, their hook-ups ceased and Courtney avoided being around Elliot. After realizing how much he missed being with Courtney, Elliot decided she was worth taking a chance on. Only problem with that was he had to convince Courtney they should be more than friends. Courtney was not easy to convince. It wasn't her fault however she had a huge amount of grief and turmoil to deal with on a daily basis. It amazed me how strong she really was even if she didn't think so.

Elliot and Courtney's relationship was hard to watch at times. Their situation broke my heart and I'll be honest when I say I wasn't sure this book would have a happy ending. It was a long and difficult road but when two people loved each other the way Elliot and Courtney did, it was for certain they'd find their happily-ever-after together.

I definitely recommend this book if you enjoy emotional reads. While your at it, I also recommend you read Devastate. Both books have a smooth pace with writing that flows easily, I'll warn you though, keep a box of tissues handy.

This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it.

** ARC provided by the author for an honest review **

Bad habits and codependency bring two people together intimately. Grief and sadness pull them apart emotionally. Marley Valentine’s Deviate touches on sensitive subjects and the coping mechanisms that are used to deal with or avoid the reality of a situation.

“I’m addicted to an endless pattern of poor decisions, unmet standards, and unexpressed ambitions.” –Courtney

Courtney ends her purely physical relationship with Elliot after she has a scare that forces her to confront her life and feelings. She makes a choice not to let the tragedy in her past take away the happiness of her future. She begins living for herself for the first time. If only she could forget her feelings for the man who was only meant to be a distraction.

“I can’t seem to remember the moment he and I changed. The moment my escape turned into my newest nightmare, and everything light and fun turned into hot and heavy.” –Courtney

Elliot has his own tragic past and while they started out as distractions for each other, he now wants more. He is willing to take it as slow as she needs until she can see that they are meant to be more than f*** buddies, meant to be more than just friends. Lucky for him their nosy friends Loir and Evie think the same and instigate various ways to get them together.

“His cologne, mixed with the alcohol and the exhilarating rush of the smoke, has me weak. My resolve is breaking and every rule, every excuse and every reason I’ve been avoiding him fades. Because tonight, I’m flying high and feeling free. Tonight, whatever he wants, I’ll do.” –Courtney

I love it when the best friends and other various secondary characters get their own story. The tragedies in both Elliot and Courtney’s pasts play a significant part in their romance. Add to that Elliot’s highly unattainable standards and Courtney’s vulnerability, they need to work harder than most for their happy ending.

Courtney was a character who I really felt emotionally. She is so passionate and caring, especially with her mother. Both were on a cycle of destruction and my heart still feels the heaviness of why. I have not been personally affected by suicide or depression, and I hope that I never am, but I have friends that have dealt with one or both. The emotional drain and guilt that comes in the aftermath is devastating to watch. One line that caught me and had tears in my eyes was when Courtney’s mother told her, “Make sure you check in on your sister before you go to bed.” It is just a simple sentence but the meaning had so much impact on me.

I really enjoyed this book and it wasn’t all sadness. Tardy Tina and mentions of infamous romance characters Eva Tramell and Anastasia Steele brought a smile to face. Not to mention the steamy scenes between Elliot and Courtney that brought a flush to my face. I am giving Marley FIVE stars for yet another emotionally charged read.

Wow, this is the second offering from Marley Valentine and again, right from the first page I was drawn in. My heart began to pound knowing that Valentine can shake out every emotion with her written word.

This story is about Courtney or Court as we know her from the previous story, Devastate. And of course, how could I possibly forget the handsome Elliot! Theirs was a very palpable attraction or so I thought, but feelings begin to run deeper than that. Courtney's built a stone wall around her which she's masked with her quirky personality and her need to have physical attention from Elliot.

Elliot is honest and hard working with feelings that run deep. He has a tough exterior, but his sensitive side shows through; especially where Courtney is concerned. However, he realises he needs to chip away to get closer than just the physicality of their relationship if he wants more.

Courtney hides a tragic past so well and it is only a matter of time before it starts crumbling around her. She has been so strong and dependable for such a long time, she forgets about her own feelings. Court dives into everyday life and not giving a clue to anyone there is a problem. Her friendship with Evie is still as strong as ever, and to think that she helped Evie come out of her shell is ironic considering she behaves like a closed book. Joking and confidence being her armour.

The story does have humour as well as the hard-hitting element and I loved the interactions with Elliot, Court, Lior and Evie. There are a few other side characters that add a touch of lightness to something so hard hitting. Deviate has everything, heartache and steamy passion to keep the reader entertained.

Valentine draws you in and cuts you deep with Deviate. She certainly makes you sit up and realise there is probably an element of her characters within us if you have suffered personal tragedy. Always so relatable. Especially Courtney’s plight of keeping the secret of her pain in order to be strong for others. This book gives the realisation that it's ok to feel your own pain and share your grief and that you're never alone.

I enjoyed this book from the first page right until the last. It had my heart beating with the overwhelming anticipation of Courtney and Elliott getting to where they needed to be. I was rooting for them all the way. There's also a very enjoyable playlist to accompany Deviate which I can’t stop listening to over again. It makes me think about the book to the point I know I'll have to do a reread. Marley Valentine is certainly a talented storyteller and I look forward to future works. I’m hoping Valentine will revisit these characters as I would love to know how life is for them after the rollercoaster surrounding their tragedies are concerned. I'm sure it will show that even in their adversities of life, time with the right kind of support can help them move forward, not just get over anything...simply learn to breathe.

Deviate by Marley Valentine is about Elliot and Courtney. We met them in Devastate this is their emotional and powerful story. Marley wrote a beautiful story that was real, raw and heartbreaking. I was addicted to the storyline from the beginning to the very last page. At times I wanted scream out my frustration on a certain someone, you'll see who I mean when you read it. Deviate touches on sensitive subjects and Marley did a brilliant job in writing those scenes.

Courtney comes across as a strong independent woman but deep down she is broken and scarred. She keeps walls built around her to protect herself from getting hurt and letting anyone in. Courtney has been through a devastating loss one she hasn't fully recovered from nor come to terms with it. This heartbreak has left Courtney closed off and secretly suffering in silence. My heart broke for her so many times.

Elliot I simply adored this man he had a heart of gold and the patience of a saint. He's also been through his share of heartache but for Elliot he chooses to live his life and not dwell on the past. He knows that moving forward with his life is the best thing for him, if he doesn't the past will destroy him completely.

Courtney and Elliot are friends with benefits and when feelings start to get in their way, the two try to fight them off as much as they can. Neither are willing to admit their is an attraction brewing between them, leaving them to go their separate ways. Trying to avoid each other becomes impossible when you both have best friends dating. Plus those best friends want nothing more than to see the two of you happy and together. Will Courtney let Elliot in and let him see the real her? Will she keep those walls so high up making it impossible for Elliot to break them down? Could two broken souls heal each other? What's Courtney hiding, will she tell Elliot? So many unanswered questions that will be answered and much more when you read this epic love story.

I absolutely Loved Devastate by Marley Valentine, so was so excited to be able to delve into Deviate, and follow the story of Elliott and Courtney...

This story was full to the brim of emotion and turmoil from the characters. Both characters have suffered such loss, and such tragedies, but being able to share those is hard. Especially for Courtney. If you've read Devastate, you will know some of the back story from the characters and have a good idea of what has happened in their pasts. Personally, I think it would be really beneficial to read the 2 books in order. Although, yes this is a standalone, I personally would recommend reading in order to get a full pictures of the characters and their stories.

Courtney and Elliott start will a convenient 'relationship' of casualness...! But eventually feelings start to get in the way and as much as they fight them, Courtney in particular starts building some rather high thick walls to stop Elliott getting in or getting too close.

I loved the two characters, and loved how kind, caring and considerate Elliott was. But also I could see his frustrations, and honestly, as a reader I was REALLY frustrated at times!! Just open up to him Court!!!!

There are a lot of emotions in this book, as the characters have been through such a journey together, with everyone struggling in their own ways.

I loved the fact that the characters have such a strong friendship with Evie and Loir, and we see plenty of them in this book too. This is a book at will tug on the heartstrings and leave you turning the pages, wanting more and too see how this story will pan out!!

The words flowed really well, and the overall story was super. I love the authors writing style and the dual POV's!

Another great book from Marley Valentine, and I can't wait to see what she brings us next!!

Courtney and Elliot are friends with benefits who aren’t really friends. They know each other through mutual friends, but rarely communicate outside the bedroom. That was the way they wanted it. Until it wasn’t.

After Courtney gets a scare, she decides that her arrangement with Elliot needs to end. He doesn’t know the reason why she cut him off, but after a few weeks of not seeing her, he starts to miss her in a way he never expected.

Elliot wants Courtney and he tries to get through to her, excusing her odd behavior and enabling her to keep her distance. Courtney’s personal issues prevent her from getting too close to anyone. She has feelings for Elliot, but she self-sabotages herself with her unwillingness to talk to him about what is going on.

When Courtney’s secret is finally revealed, will Elliot stand by her or will it be the last in a long line of disappointments that Courtney has doled out to him?

I really enjoyed this story. It kept me engaged from beginning to end. The book touched on several difficult subjects and Marley did a wonderful job with the descriptions and emotions surrounding them.

Valentine has done it again. She has the uncanny ability to take her readers on the emotional feels roller coaster along with her characters. Just like in Devastate Valentine grabs your attention from the first word in the book and you are unable to put it down until you are finished.

Deviate focuses on two secondary characters in Devastate, Courtney and Elliot. These two are both just looking for some fun and to scratch and itch for a little while with no strings attached. It’s not to long before these two begin to have feelings for one another. Instead of admitting their attraction to one another they decide to call it quits. However, they are unable two avoid each other. When your two best friend are dating and would love nothing more than to see you happy you can expect there to be meddling. Sometimes you have to deviate from your planned course in order to find your path to true happiness.

I honestly wish I would have read this book before Devastate because I could have had more of a connection with Elliot and Courtney. Valentine wrote an amazing emotional story that tugs at the heart-strings, but for me personally I was unable to connect with it at the same level as I did with Liore and Evie

Marley Valentine is definitely on her way to becoming one of my favorite authors. She is definitely one to keep your eye out for.

Shew! What a read! Marley has written another relatable story that digs deep into addiction, death, suicide and anxiety. It’s something all of us have experienced one way or another. The loss of a loved one is never forgotten but you learn to cope. Some days like Elliot and Courtney, you experience self pity, hatred and sabotage. You try to find a balance between the real world and the fake persona so no one knows what really happens behind closed doors! Courtney struggled with her own loss with a smile plastered on her face and dealt with it in her own way, alone! When reading Deviate you will feel the emotions being brought to life screaming at you with each page turn; sadness, anger, happiness and love. But, above all of that Elliot and Courtney were a perfect match! They had fun and awesome hookups! Until a secret becomes no longer avoidable that will be the test that could tear them apart for good. 1-click this emotional beauty 😃

Courtney and Elliot are friends with benefits and that is all they can be according to Courtney. Both have experienced heartbreak and loss of a loved one. This experience has left Courtney closed off while Elliot is open to more.

Both of their heartbreaks have come from a very similar experience. Courtney is still living the nightmare but keeps that part of her life out of bounds and secret.

I guess I understood why Courtney kept part of her life hidden from Elliot but I didn't like it, especially as he is the one person who would have completely understood and supported her, taking some of the weight off her shoulders. My heart broke for these two but their journey towards healing was a remarkable one. There were many ups and downs along the way that added so much more to their story. I was so happy when Courtney realised that she didn't have to do everything by herself - my heart started singing for her. Well worth a read.

I was a bit surprised reading “Deviate” by Marley Valentine, in a pleasantly way, because after seeing the blurb I thought a darker story, instead it's really a beautiful love story. Elliott is the one i loved the most between the two protagonists, he’s sexy, funny but caring and a strong presence in the lives of the people he loves. Court and Elliot, both of them, have suffered, have lost so much, but Elliot is the one who managed not only to overcome the
moment, but also to be supportive for the others, a real point of reference, the light of the lighthouse that drives you in the midst of the storm.
This is the reason because I loved him so much and I think he’s amazing. He’s young but he’d totally understand Court if she didn’t feel so much the need to hide her past and her the mother's problems as if she were ashamed.
She take care of her problems trying to ignore them, looking for a moment of truce from reality searching for strong emotions, sex, in a story without commitment with Elliott. But being friends complicated things with him, and they both feel there is something more in their story and Court is really terrified.
Elliot is willing to step back, bring everything back as before, to win her over slowly, and finally find out what she hides and why she tries in all ways to exclude him from her life.
Deviate is the second book in the series, but it can be read as a stand alone, although in this story we meet the protagonists of the previous book, Evie and Lior, and I guess between the lines their story is beautiful and deserves to be read.

Geezus get the tissues out before you even begin because the emotional ride you’re going to be on is intense. This book hits you right in the center and stays there, you’ll feel as though you’re best friends with Courtney and right there with Elliot the entire time. Courtney has the weight of the world on her shoulders and keeps so much to herself as much as Elliot can relate and they can be there for one and understand exactly what she’s feeling. I love the man he is and how determined he is to be with her and show that he is not going anywhere. Beautifully written and an absolute page turner. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.

A phenomenal MUST read!!

This book is so beautifully written. Marley brings to light the tragedy of loss and love in the epic love story.

Some know how to share their pain and grief by letting others in to help. But Courtney feels like she needs to carry that weight alone.

Realizing that Elliot wants more than to be friends will she open up to him or leave him in the dark?

Sometimes the truth can set you free or it can break you down. You have to be willing to choose your own path in life and not let others dictate it.

The story was infinitely better than the previous one but I was disappointed in the way Elliot handled everything. However, the important thing, in the end, was that Courtney overcame her trauma and found her happiness.

Despite this, I recognize that the author managed to convey to me the feelings of abandonment and pain that overwhelmed Courtney.

Unique emotional read! This touching and emotional story really pulled at my heart strings as serious issues are revealed.
Friends with benefits Elliott and Courtney discover that their arrangement isn't working out.
Why?
Deep rooted emotions, self doubt and secrets surface as they navigate their situation.
Can they have more than a physical relationship.
The writing was great, the story flowed easily and the characters were nicely developed. The chemistry amongst the characters was relatable.

I was so excited for this book for a long time. I couldn't wait to read about Elliott and Courtney, and I was not disappointed. I loved these two together. There love story is sad yet beautiful. I loved getting a glimpse into Lior and Evie's life. Author is becoming one of my favorites.
