Free Me (Found Duet Book 1) Kindle Edition
I wasn’t supposed to be working the night I met JC.
Before him, I’d been content with the daily grind, managing one of NYC’s top nightclubs. So what if my life didn’t have a happily ever after? I didn’t believe in that anyway.
Then JC showed up.
Sexy, rich and smooth-talking, JC is nothing more than a distraction. I’m not interested in a night-in-shining latex so it’s easy to push the playboy away. Or it is until my life spins unexpectedly out-of-control. Then he’s there for me, offering a new method of survival, one based on following primal urges and desires that requires me to abandon my constant need for control.
His no-strings-attached lessons obliterate my carefully built walls. And as I discover freedom, I start to feel things for him that I shouldn’t. Things that make me fear for my newly vulnerable heart. Because JC has secrets of his own, and his secrets don’t want to set him free.

About the author

With millions of books sold worldwide, Laurelin Paige is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author. She is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Game of Thrones or Letterkenny, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. She's also a proud member of Mensa International though she doesn't do anything with the organization except use it as material for her bio. She is represented by Rebecca Friedman.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2015I loved Alayna and Hudson and their story and that's how I fell in love with Laurelin Paige's writing and her stories. And Free Me was definitely not a disappointment. In a way if was even better than the Fixed Trilogy. The story is intriguing and entertaining, filled with hotness and sometimes humor and peppered with danger and excitement. It kept me on my toes until the very last word and after I finished, I just wanted more of JC and Gwen. The story was only made even more interesting by the unexpected twists in it. It just kept me guessing till the last moment and I can honestly say that I still haven't figured out everything that's going on. Which I must say doesn't happen often.
JC and Gwen are quite interesting characters. They are both broken due to traumatic experiences in their past. And they both chose to close themselves from the world and save themselves the hurt of a heartbreak. The moment they meet, the attraction between them is simply undeniable and none of them can resist it for long. They are sizzling hot together and simply explosive in bed. So the no-strings attached relationship is not a surprise. The problem is that their relationship doesn't stay that way. In each other they find a deeper understanding and without even realizing it, their feelings get deeper. In a way, they are perfect for each other.
And just when they finally find the peace they are looking for, both their pasts come chasing them. In Gwen's case, that's the nightmare she lived through as a child. In JC's case, his whole past is covered in secrets and shadows, With every secret he reveals, there are just more questions popping up. And let me tell you, even if you manage to guess some of the secrets, you will be still quite surprised by the rest. The only thing is that the book finished with such a cliffhanger, that I am dying to get my hands on the next one. If all that is not enough for you to pick up Free Me, keep in mind that JC is one hot dominant alpha male with a broken heart and soul. He is also romantic and tender and simply a god in bed. And who doesn't love a broken bad boy with a chance for redemption.
So if you ask my opinion, this is definitely a must read. The story will intrigue you from the first sentence and simply keep you on your toes until the last word. I am pretty sure that you will love Gwen and JC and you will also get the chance to meet Norma, Hudson and Alayna again. The book is intriguing and it has romance, tenderness, humor, danger and excitement. So get your #oneclick finger working and pick a copy. And I know I usually don't end up my reviews with quotes but there is one in this book that simply got stuck with me. So I decided to share it :)
"The current age is but a brief moment in the greater scope of existence."
This review was originally posted at Living In Our Own Story Book Blog. I received an ARC of the book in exchange of an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2019Just a side note/update that did not affect my review, but I wanted to express my disappointment re my interaction with the author. After purchasing the entire set of Fixed series books along with the Found duet, some of the Dirty series, and a couple of spin-offs and standalones, I found her website and applied to be an ARC reader (I filled out the form and linked to my MANY reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, and Bookbub). I received a response that only fans of her work that had read her books were able to be on the ARC team. I was confused and replied that I had read her books, reviewed them on multiple platforms, and I was a fan which is why I had applied to be on her review team. She just gave me an "I'll look into it" kind of reply and never responded. I get that she is probably a busy person, but it doesn't take long to say "So sorry - my review team is currently full but I will keep your information in case there is an opening." Since then, I have not purchased any of her books; I did pick one up when it was free, but I was pretty put off with her dismissive response and was very disappointed that she didn't seem to really care about her readers.
Below is my unedited review of this book:
___________________________________________________________________________________
This series is a spin-off from The Fixed series, but it can be read without having read the other series (though I would recommend reading the Fixed Trilogy at least first because there are recurring characters and situations that won't make as much sense without more background and context). This is part one of a duet, and it ends on a cliffhanger.
Gwendolyn Anders hasn't had it easy. Her mother passed away when she was a young child, and her father delighted in abusing Gwen, her older sister Norma, and especially the youngest sibling Ben. While Norma tried to protect her younger sibs as much as she could, she had to leave for college to make a better life for all of them, and when that happened, Gwen and Ben were put through the ringer. But every time any neighbor or school official bothered to report the obvious signs of abuse, her father covered it up and forced the kids to lie or else suffer even more severe consequences at his hand. It wasn't until her father went too far in punishing her brother when he saw the 12 year old checking out male models instead of female ones which landed him in the emergency room that he was finally arrested for child abuse and thrown in prison where he has been for 10 years. Gwen was 17 at the time, so Norma took official custody of her younger siblings and has supported them ever since with her high paying job as the CFO for Pierce Industries. Though Gwen lives with Norma (and Norma pays the bills), she has recently found a niche for herself in the entertainment industry as a successful nightclub manager. She works in the most elite and popular spot in New York City: The Eighty-Eighth Floor, and despite her lack of any social life to speak of for many years, she loves her job. And then one Tuesday night (which she has always had off), the manager on duty called in, and her boss (club owner) was on vacation, so she had to abandon her usual plans with Norma catching up on The Voice to go into work where she finds an unequaled display of debauchery unfolding in their semi-private VIP room. Though Gwen is initially repulsed at the sight of half naked women sprawled across the laps of seemingly well-to-do businessmen, she realizes that not all is what it seems ... the women are actually classy (if that is possible), and the entertainment is not vulgar but more of a release for all. When her eyes connect with the man she believes to be the host of the interesting event, she is rocked. JC is like no man she has ever seen before - confident, cool, and drop-dead gorgeous. But he seems unaffected and even uninterested in all that is going on around him, and she recognizes a deeper rooted pain similar in some ways to her own.
JC also feels the spark and connection with the woman who barged into his weekly event and demanded to know what is going on. Though she is dressed in a long-sleeved shirt and slacks, she is much more enticing than any of the scantily clad women in the room, and he finds that he has to know more about this tightly wound woman. He challenges her to accept his "help" in getting her to relax more, and though she stiffens at the suggestion and tries to appear uninterested, he can tell that she secretly is. But there have to be very strict rules: no last names, no addresses, no personal stories, no connection beyond the physical. Gwen finally accepts his offer because she doesn't want a deeper connection either, but with her father getting out of jail and her brother attempting suicide, she knows she needs some form of release for all of the stress. While things begin the way they agreed, Gwen and JC find it harder and harder to remain aloof after their ongoing weekly rendezvous. But when JC's secret threatens not only the potential for any happiness or future but also their very lives, can Gwen take a leap of faith to be with this man who has freed her? And if he is taken from her, can they somehow, some day find each other again?
What I liked:
--- This was even more intense than the Fixed Trilogy across the board in terms of the chemistry, the "danger" aspects, and the secrets
--- Both characters were likeable though very complex
--- STEAMY STEAMY STEAMY goodness!!
What I didn't like as much:
--- JC's character (view spoiler)
--- Gwen was a little too stubborn at times - I get that she has been through A LOT, but she could have been a little more willing to put herself out there, especially once she realized she was in love with JC and vice versa
Overall, a VERY steamy read with complex plot lines, characters, and a heartbreaking cliffhanger ending.
Plot --- 4/5
Main Characters --- 4/5
Supporting Cast --- 4/5
Steam Level* --- 4.75/5
Violence --- none
Language --- liberal use of the f word
POV --- 1st (Gwen's)
*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild; 2/5 - sensual but nothing descriptive; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere; 4/5 - yes please! ; 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all

5.0 out of 5 stars Recomendadissimo! Serio! Apaixonante...
#3.1 Hudson
---- SpinOff de "Fixed": "The Found Duet" (apenas em inglês):
#1 Free Me
#2 Find Me

Vou tentar resumir pra vc:
Nossa mocinha (narradora) eh a Gwen.
Eis o titulo do livro "FREE ME".

5.0 out of 5 stars Gwen and JC = <3
Let me point out one thing first: I love Laurelin Paige's stories! "Free Me" was no different. I read this book in one day just cause I couldn't bring myself to put it down. It was heart wrenching at some points and very erotic and hot at others. Paige has some magic ability to capture my interest and an absolutly stunning way of telling a story and writing sex scenes :D
There is not one thing I'd change regarding Gwen and JC's story so far and I am really looking forward to the next "The Found Duet Book"!

5.0 out of 5 stars Laurelin Paige does again..!! 5*
Oh yes this was fantastic, you get that same feeling reading Free Me as you did reading the Fixed Trilogy, all the secrets and the general feel of anticipation are very apparent.
I found myself thinking back because Gwen was mentioned towards the end and we knew she came to work for The Sky launch but we didn't know the real reason why, I thought it was all very cleverly written and laid out, the timing etc, and all this with Gwen and JC was before Fixed..
Laurelin Page has this wonderful gift with being able to portray with such ease the natural flow and chemistry between Gwen and JC almost every conversation they had with each other came across so real, the scene at the Market for instance was just brilliant.
You could feel it all bubbling under the surface and you are desperately trying to work things out, wondering what it is with JC, your certainly kept on your toes that's for sure.!
There are lots of stand out moments and as the story came to an end I couldn't help feeling so disappointed not in a bad way but because I just wanted them to be with each other, they hadn't even exchanged names or numbers, I was going mad, anyway the invertible happened and with Gwen back home and ready to start at The Sky Launch and you realise then the situation between Alayna and Norma was still tense because it was still at the stage were I'm sure there were still issues and misunderstanding going on between Hudson and Alayna, the story lines were colliding beautifully and everything fell into place, absolutely brilliant.!!
All I can say is JC better come back and Gwen better be waiting for him but I'm sure things will not go as smoothly as we as we are hoping.
Please hurry with Find Me, I need to know..
Thank you for another great series ..!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Profoundly emotional
Both the first book (the one called Free Me) and the bonus novel are well thought out and portray personalities with deep emotional issues, although the book 1 is definitely not finished, and really almost makes buying the second book a necessity. The bonus novel is complete, and fills in a blank space of the first part while never actually using any part or main character from Free Me.
Very involving.
