Pretty When You Cry: A Dark Romance Novel (Stripped Book 4) Kindle Edition
I came from a place of dirt floors and holy scriptures. They told me the world outside was full of sin, and the first night I escape, I find out it’s true.
Ivan saves me, but he does more than that. He takes me.
He makes me his own girl.
My conditioning runs too deep. Ivan sees what I am. That’s the thing about showing a mouse to a cat. He wants to play.
And it’s terrifying, even for me.
Because the only thing darker than my past is his.
Author’s Note: Pretty When You Cry is a STANDALONE dark romance novel. It's set in the sexy Stripped series world but can be read alone. Not intended for those uncomfortable with the subject matter or under eighteen.
“5 deliciously dark stars! I love how dark and twisted this book is. It’s so dirty and dark and well it’s so me!!!” – Alpha Book Club
“Skye Warren you keep leaving me speechless and my mind blank with the worst book hangover ever.” – Bibliophile Wonderland Reviews
“When you sit down to write a review and get chills, that’s when you know a story is going to stay with you… Gritty, raw, powerful and most of all beautiful.” – The Book Sirens
“The writing is so incredibly fluid, the characters so intriguing, and the story so captivating. If I could give this book more than five stars, I would. It’s as emotional as it is sexy, and beautiful as it is dark. Absolutely flawless.” – Sammy, Just Let Me Read

I'm a new reader to this author. I'm always hesitant to buy a book from an author I don't know but I'm so glad I did. This book isn't pretty it's raw it's gritty and it's bloody good!

Oh how I so love this series! Ivan and Candy's story wasn't at all what I was expecting. Candy escapes from a very trapped religious cult lifestyle to fall right into another raw and twisted situation, only she sort of chooses to be in this one. Ivan owns 'The Grand' and everyone fears him, he has a broken past and doesn't want to let Candy go. I'm not sure who is more messed up Candy or Ivan ?
Another blinder to this series, this one is 'dark' but I didn't think it was overly dark. In places I wasn't too sure if I liked where it was going - personally I'm not keen on the whole 'Daddy and Little Girl' thing they had going, but putting that aside I really enjoyed the action and intrigue in this one. I really wanted to know more of Ivan's past. This is a standalone, but it would be better read in order to understand the other characters.
After reading this 'Stripped' series I'm off to find more from Skye Warren !
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 May 2017Excellently dark and compelling , it gave a good description of Candy's background and how she found herself at The Grand strip club we also had an insight on Ivan's background but I would have liked to have learnt more about him . Beautiful ending for Candy & Ivan although during the reopening of the club Clara ( Honors sister) has gone missing !!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 August 2021I’ve never been a huge fan of daddy books but my god this one made me hot as hell
Ivan is a beast of a man with a dark past ( and Even
Better he’s scared 😍😍 I love a man whose scared they are sexy as sin ) candy is both bratty and sweet and wants Ivan like she wants her freedom and my god they are fire together
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 August 2021I went into this book not know much but it was so much different than I thought. The candace grew up in an almost cult type setting. Then runs away and finds herself in this city where iven finds her and feels like he has to protect her almost. He owns a club that she wants to work in but he doesn’t let her until she is older but then some bad things happen that she thinks is related to where she came from. Somethings she does i did question because I don’t understand a lot of the reasons she does what she does. The book just didn’t make a lot of sense to me. The one thing I did like was that the end had a twist that made my brain explode.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantástico
Arrisque. Skye Warren apresenta uma história sem defeitos.

1.0 out of 5 stars Could not finish it
This is the story of Ivan and Candy but for the life of me I could not bring myself to finish the book, too much crudeness and unnecessary sadness. The plot is slow in developing and it doesn't appeal you to continue and read further. There is no affection or any other positive feeling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not soft or sweet
Yum, yum, yum -I squeed when "Daddy" came out of Candy's mouth and the story just kept getting better from there!
Having seen Candy and Ivan in action throughout the rest of the series, their back story is nothing that you would have come up with. It was so perfect though, completely damaged and a fit for each other, even while they weren't, they are fascinating to see together
This, this story is why I love this authour. The weaving, the squirming, heck, even the joy, it all has a pall cast over it. Having a shade of Daddy Dom in there, it makes things all the better
Looking for undying confessions of love? Two people who complete each other and have their HEA walking off into the sunset? Yeah, not happening here, but if two hurting people who find the other person to hurt with that they can't live without, so they are together, then this is a perfect story for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A darkly tantalizing tale that will bring you to your knees!
"Every love story is a knot, and ours is threaded with steel."
I have been an admirer of Skye Warren's writing for a while, and she never ceases to amaze me with her sheer brilliance, innate talent and incredible versatility. And Pretty When You Cry (Stripped, bk 3) is a stellar example of what she is truly capable of. In fact, this just might be her most provocative book to date.
That being said, this Stripped novel is incredibly raw and guttural, definitely not for the faint at heart. The author herself added a disclaimer upfront that due to the risqué subject matter explored throughout, this was going to be a departure from her typical dark erotica fare, and it may not appeal to the masses. And while it was definitely a tumultuous, twisty ride with some jaw dropping moments, it left me completely and utterly spellbound.
Throughout this book, I felt my heart clutch with a mixture of dread/ fascination, as I was constantly on pins and needles wondering what deliciously wicked surprise Ms. Warren had in store for us next. And yet, at the same time, I felt a giddy sense of shivery anticipation. The religious cult mystery thread definitely veers on the edge of creepy and perversely chilling times, but never felt too over the top, and I thought it was the perfect catalyst to add a sense of dramatic urgency to the central storyline, titillate the senses and ultimately enrapture the reader.
The relationship between Candy and Ivan is incredibly complex, so much so it is hard to adequately define it. I think Ms. Warren was very brave to tell their story because I know some fans are squeamish about the whole "daddy/little" sexual role play dynamic, but I personally enjoy the kink (TMI?) and think she did a masterful job exploring the dark nuances of their taboo relationship, while at the same time infusing their union with brusque tenderness and heartbreaking emotion.
Candy, a beautiful, vibrant stripper at the Grand was once a shell of her new and improved self. At the impressionable young age of sixteen, her mother cast her out in the world all alone so she could escape the evil clutches of reviled religious cult dictator, "Leader Allen." Which brought her into the crosshairs of Ivan, the formidable, enigmatic owner of the Grand Nightclub. He saw something special in the scared, docile young runaway and took her under his wing, offering her safety and refuge, provided she abided by his strict rules.
Now three years later, she is no longer a timid teenager, living in fear of harsh reprisal for her "ungodly sins," but a lovely, vibrant young woman with aching needs and unquenched desires. She is desperately in love with "Daddy Ivan," but he refuses to see her as anything other than his wayward little girl in need of care, dominance and stern discipline . A relationship eerily reminiscent of her oppressive past in Harmony Hills, still very much defined by rewards and punishments, contingent on good girl behavior and naughty misdeeds.
"I’m not good,” I say.
“I know. And I’m going to spank you, and then you’ll learn what happens to bad girls.”
It is a toxic, never ending cycle of pain, punishment and perverse pleasure, and now that old skeletons from Candy's former life have come back to haunt her, threatening everyone in her inner circle at the Grand, Ivan tightens the tyrannical reigns even more to the point she can hardly breathe.
"No matter how much I want to, I can’t pretend I’m happy....I want Ivan. I love Ivan, but I can’t be his little girl forever. That’s all I’ll ever be to him. I know that now."
Make no mistake...Ivan is not your typical swoony hero. He is ruthless and scary and infuriatingly aloof (but for good reason) and his dominance over Candy sometimes takes the form of cruel humiliation with shades of heartless brutality. And he can be so vigilant in his determination to protect her, he often comes across more like tough as nails jailer than brusquely tender Daddy Dom.
In fact, his controlling ways get so bad it finally reaches the breaking point. The old adage "If you love someone set them free" is very symbolic of this relationship and although a newly evolved Candy is not willing to acquiesce to status quo, she still fights the dueling desires raging inside of her. A part of her secretly gets off on being his submissive little girl, yet another more prevalent part yearns for liberation, independence and sexual awakening. As I said, their relationship is very complex! But despite their increasingly volatile interactions that often reach a fever pitch, their burning desire for each other is always simmering beneath the surface.
Even though Ivan's tragic past precludes him from being sweet, doting lover Candy thinks she wants and needs, he proves his devotion to her time and again, and as the threats escalate, there was never a doubt in my mind that he would move heaven and earth to shield her from harm and keep her happy and safe. And sweet heaven...my heart would just melt during some of those rare, precious, fleeting moments when Ivan would drop the iron cold facade, cuddle Candy on his lap, cocoon her in his his strong, sheltering arms, and gently soothe away her troubles.
Frankly, Ivan is a hero you feel almost guilty for coveting, but you just can't help but be enthralled by him because despite his dark, predatory nature, he is also a man who has the capacity for love and intimacy, and now that a newly defiant Candy insists on testing him at every turn, it turns out she is the one woman capable of bringing this big bad Dom to his knees.
“This is what makes you special, little one. Countless people have tried to hurt me, to kill me. You were the one to slay me.”
Ultimately, this is a dark, twisty tale about two deeply damaged, kindred spirits who must bolster the courage to banish their demons in order to find love and acceptance in each other, flaws, fetishes, naughty cravings and all!
"We are made of the same thing, he and I. Of sin and hope, of power and pleasure."
In closing, I think that Ms. Warren did a magnificent job of showcasing this couple's slow burning evolution from coldly detached Dom/Sub to something real and intimate and everlasting, while at the same time still staying true to their innate personalities, baser instincts and secret taboo desires.
So if you too derive pleasure in dark, lascivious tales bristling with danger, intrigue, forbidden lust and wicked desire (with the added bonus of some deliciously kinky spankings!), then I command you to submit to this mesmerizing story!
