Chasing Daylight (Carolina Days Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 91 ratings

Mitch Brooks exists day to day by keeping the world around him at arm’s length. There is no going back to the man he once was. That man is broken in a way there’s no fixing. Any hope beyond that is nothing but wishful thinking, until he meets her.
McKenzie Williams needed an escape. The last thing she needed was a scary beautiful man beating down her door in the middle of the night. Now, if only their paths would stop crossing, she can convince herself she doesn’t feel a connection to him. Life has shown her the dreams she once held dear will never come true for her.
Mitch struggles to get past the walls he’s built around himself, while McKenzie works to build hers brick by brick. When the outside world exposes the vulnerabilities in his façade, she abandons her own fears to stand by him. Will she be the one to save him from the darkness within him? Or will he forever be chasing daylight?

Blown away once again by your fantastic work. Loved the complete series in these books.

I have loved every book that this author has written and this is no exception......This book in my opinion is her best yet. I never give spoilers....you need to read the book.....but this book has everything that you could possibly ever want in a story. Romance, humour, mystery, angst but above all else characters that could be your next door neighbor. The realism that this author integrates within her stories completely captivates me. I become emotionally attached to all the characters in this book, the main characters, the best friends and the dog! I think what it simply comes down to is that this author makes me feel with her words.....and that ability is extremely rare. One of the best books I've read this year and one I will re-read time and time again.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I don’t know where to start with this review. I absolutely love Carey’s writing and have been a fan since 2013 when I stumbled across Him on Amazon and fell in love with Will and Sarah’s story. I confess that I never thought Carey could create a character I’d love more than Will because in effect he was my first love of hers, but then I met Luke in Yesterday’s Half Truths (Carolina, Book 2) and thought, well hello! But…..Mitch has just knocked me for six!!!

One word kept echoing in my head as I read this book and it was ~ kismet! Mitch and McKenzie’s characters have had to deal with some of the worst situations a person can ever be in or overcome, but it made them who they are at the start of the book and in my view were destined for each other to make each other whole.

I did have a few shouty moments at my kindle thinking to myself “Seriously! How much more are this couple going to have to endure – they need their HEA already <3.” And don’t even get me started on Zeus and what that dog represents. It’s hard to even contemplate all the lives that dogs like Zeus have saved and it makes me think how lucky I am.

Oh and did I mention how hot these two characters are together?! What?! No?! Oops, my bad!! The sexual chemistry is off the charts ~ take McKenzie’s description of Mitch:

“Mitch is seriously hot just existing, all shirtless and wet takes him to a level of hot that has not previously been discovered.”

The writing is phenomenal and I was swept away to another time and place and that is one of the things I love best about this author. I also have to applaud the subjects covered in this book such as domestic violence, amputees, PTSD and therapy dogs and the sympathetic and realistic ways in which they were portrayed.

McKenzie sums the book up for me when she says:

“I’m not perfect but somehow I’m perfect for him.”

5.0 out of 5 stars My fave of the series!!
Reviewed in the United States on 14 October 2015
4.5 stars -- yup, everything I was looking for in a book!

First we have Mitch, who is seriously a perfect hero for Lenore -- a bit damaged, vulnerable, but seriously sexy. I guess I like the strong silent types. My heart broke for him and how alone he was in the beginning, and how apparent that became as he started to want to join the land of the living. I think I swooned when he ordered the sushi platter the night before to not look like a newbie. Him sitting alone in his apartment checking off a list, something about that just got to me. And sure, his instant obsession was a little uncomfortable at times, but it still fit with his character and came from a genuine place.

McKenzie was a great and spunky heroine. I loved how open she was with the people who loved her, and how quickly she welcomed Mitch into that inner circle. Normally it would have bothered me more how quickly she accepted him given her past, but in light of the circumstances I will allow it...:P (tongue firmly in cheek)

The secondary characters totally topped this novel off perfectly. Alec and Rachel were amazing friends, and I loved how close they all were and how integral they were to the story (true secondary characters, not just throwaways).

And then there's Zeus. Oh man, that dog totally stole the show. If I swooned over Mitch, I definitely melted for Zeus as many times. They are such a package deal, and I loved seeing a Warrior Dog in action. I mean, I love dogs anyways, but Zeus was his own character tugging at my heartstrings.

I loved the amount of suspense and action in this book. I mean, seriously, they went through their fair share of trials and tribulations. I will say that I saw some of the end coming, but was totally surprised by a certain other character!! Nicely done Ms. Heywood, keeping me on my toes.

It's been fun reading all of these Carolina Days books, but this one definitely tops out as my favourite! It just had everything working for it to make it a book I will definitely reread.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt story with *real* characters
Reviewed in the United States on 23 September 2015
Chasing Daylight is the third book in Carey Heywood’s Carolina Days series and can be read as a stand alone book.

Mitch is a disabled veteran suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). His PTSD is so bad, he has a therapy dog named Zeus who helps him get through the worst of it. Mitch meets McKenzie when Zeus needs emergency veterinarian care. Mitch feels a pull to McKenzie - the first person he’s felt any kind of connection with since his injury. McKenzie is facing her own demons and isn’t ready to jump back into a relationship. Fate has other ideas and Mitch and McKenzie are thrown together, despite their own reservations and intentions.

Sounds kind of formulaic, right? What makes Chasing Daylight different from other romance books is Mitch’s struggle with PTSD. Carey states in her note to the reader at the beginning of the book where she got the idea for Mitch and Zeus. She made Mitch an Airman because her own sister served in Iraq in the Air Force. This story was very personal for me. I am a 20 year Air Force veteran and am still on active duty. I spent 19 months in Iraq over two deployments and 12 months in Afghanistan over two deployments. I experienced a very similar situation as Mitch - I didn’t lose any limbs, but I lost a very close friend.

Carey’s gift as a writer is her ability to give depth to her characters. To make them real people with real problems. She nailed what PTSD is like - the anxiety, the anger, the sleeplessness, the inability to form and maintain close relationships… Even if Mitch is fictional, he is many of my friends.

Add to all that, Carey is able to tell a wonderful love story based on real emotions and struggles. It would be easy to see Chasing Daylight as another formulaic romance novel, but it isn’t. It’s a great story with great characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars I would give more then 5 stars...

This is the third and finale book in the Carolina Days series. I am sad to see it come to an end. I fell in love with each book for different reasons but I think I fell the hardest for Mitch. Mitch was a broken man wounded in war loosing his leg. Mitch was given a companion dog to assist him with his issues as a result of his injury. Mitch pulled away from his family and friends because he did not want to be a burden to his family and friends. He became a loner until he met McKenzie. He met McKenzie because someone (you find out later) poisoned his dog and he took him to what he thought was a clinic for help. There were sparks at first sight however McKenzie had sworn off men due to her abusive relationship she had just gotten out of and Mitch was smitten with her but didn't want to say anything yet. McKenzie is attacked b her crazy ex-boyfriend and Mitch stops the attack and is stabbed as a result. It is from this point forward that she realizes she wants him and he already knew he wanted her but both didn't want each other out of the other persons quilt. They go through so much agony in the relationship from her attack to her ex striking again but this time getting her best friend to McKenzie being kidnapped by a crazy person who wanted her out of the way because she wanted Mitch and her crazy ex again. The writing of this book was spot on with the struggles and feelings. You could feel the love grow between them. This book will have you crying then chuckling and rooting for them all through it. The only downside is I want more of them. You not only have your primary couple you have her best friend and husband that you heard their story then her beating and it felt short like there needed to be a little more. Although this series can be read as a stand alone I STONGLY suggest you read the series as the characters pop up again in the other books. You will not be disappointed.
