My first impression was the style of writing the author has used. In present tense, first person and told from both protagonists' points of view most definitely impressed me. Apart from these details which I value highly, was the incredible dialogue shared by all the characters. I also really appreciated the author's foreword explaining why she had used the lingo she had. As an avid reader, I often find this issue frustrating. In Rome do as the Romans do but up to a certain point. There is nothing worse than a Brit speaking with American jargon and vice versa; in this case Australian, her preference being American English with some gem expressions from Down Under were more than I could have asked for. Ms McCarthy outdid herself in this respect, and there wasn't one moment when her vocabulary strategy irritated me. Far from it! Its usage is rich in a story that flows faster than fast. My second impression was a foreboding feeling I had which was uncannily camouflaged in exceptional banter and one-liners that not only creased me up, but also left me in awe of this author and her leading personas. I was for a while, quite mistaken regarding what I thought was a foreseeable development of the story; never in a million years was I ready for an omnishambles on such a force ten scale either.
Quote ~ Jordan: “You need to trust that I'm doing the right thing.”
Even though I would have gladly jumped into my Kindle and given Brody a bunch of fives at one crucial moment in the story, I'd already fallen head of heels for him. Yeah, he's irresistible! I really thought he was big-headed, but my unfounded opinion of him was blown to the wind when I learnt of his handicap, the bullying he had to endure, his learning capabilities which were holding him back, and the broken and insecure man he was. Brody is the best at what he does. Playing football, American football, is his life, his love. On the field, his technique and enthusiasm reflects on all the team. He plays well, his team mates do too. He plays badly, the team lose. His responsibility weighs heavily on him, more so because he has never had anyone, not even his family, to back him up or give him encouragement. In a nutshell, this guy broke my damn heart. I cried, sobbed and couldn't believe that folk so close to him were able to do so much damage, be so cruel.
Quote ~ Brody's father: "Is that what you want? For me to smack some manners into your sorry ass? We've given you everything. Everything!"
There is light in this story in the name of Jordan Elliott. This Australian beauty is so unpretentious that you can't help but adore her. Quick witted, feisty and doesn't have the time or inclination for fooling around but in the same instance, gives someone dear to her the benefit of the doubt...until she cracks. Yes, I found her personality a tad contrasting; nevertheless, by reading the story, you will understand why she is like she is. Intelligent and hard-working, she has earned her place in a federated soccer team in a uni in Austin, Texas through pure and utter determination.
Quote ~ Jordan: “I'm not a social butterfly. I'm a reluctant caterpillar in the corner. It's awkward.”
Circumstances determine that two contrasting young people who should never have rubbed shoulders, do. Giving a helping hand to an alumni who is having trouble with his grades was the last thing Jordan needed with an agenda bursting at the seams. Despite all the hurdles, some of which are damaging to both their health and spirit, she tries her best, she tries to give this person confidence, and she becomes a fountain of undeniable love. I truly thought that it would be shattered to smithereens but it just goes to show one that love can move mountains!
Quote ~ Brody: “You can be anywhere, Jordan. Home will follow you if you follow your heart.”
Now let's get down to what makes a good read exceptional. To my way of thinking, a plus was the hardly expected arousing scenes one wouldn't expect in a read of this calibre. The sexual desire between Jordan and Brody was off limits; beautiful, tender and aggressively painted when asked for. I salute the author for this as they were written in an extremely tasteful manner. The secondary characters are just as well developed as the leading ones, and I have no doubt that if you do one-click which I highly recommend, one or two of them will bring your claws out. Who merits a mention is Jordan's room-soccer-mate, Leah. She's got Jordan's back throughout one turmoil after another and I loved her. There is a moral to this story though. The pressure professional sportsmen and women have to endure has been well-explained and puts everything into perspective. Do you want a happy ending? Read to find out whether or not these two gorgeous, young and ambitiously driven folk find it. Bravo to you Ms McCarthy!
The below just knocked me backwards.
I fight to win
To conquer
I will persevere
and use my fear
And with the grace of God
I will triumph
over failure
Rise
Beneath defeat
And I will
fly

4 stars!!
“Home’s not a place where you live. It’s a feeling.”
I thoroughly enjoyed this one; it was not at all what I was expecting from a “Sports Romance.” This was a sports romance with a twist, it was great that the heroine was also a sports star too, with this book we have a successful woman as well as a successful man and it brought a whole new dynamic to this trope in sports romance books.
Kate McCarthy painstakingly draws you into the lives of Brody and Jordan and what I loved was that this wasn’t so much about the glamour, fame and fortune that success on the football pitch brings but this centred around the pressures to succeed and also how far you would go to match up to those expectations afforded to you by family, peers and fans.
“Out there on the field, the game is everything. It builds you up, breaks you down, and it bleeds you dry. But I effing love it. It’s the only place I’m free.”
Brody Madden was the typical high school jock, except he wasn’t. He gave off those vibes in all the right places but really the reputation had no resemblance to the man himself. He was the man that all women wanted to be seen with and who all men wanted to emulate but if they really knew the real Brody Madden...would they want to be him?
“...so I lie there quietly and close my eyes, and I think about how nice it would be some days to just not wake up at all.”
Brody has the most unsupportive family...ever!! They wanted him to follow in the family footsteps, his father was a politician and his mum a society wife but it was apparent from a young age that was not going to happen. Brody had dyslexia and rather than get him the help and support that he needed, they brushed it under the carpet as an embarrassment, so Brody had to struggle all the way through school and college. It was amazing that he had made it this far. Now with his football career hanging on by a thread due to failing grades, drastic times call for drastic measures, I was just grateful that he had a supportive uncle, who fortunately was in the right place at the right time.
“Expectation is the root of all heartache.”
Jordan Elliott was the poor girl that had an affinity for football. She was at the top of her game in Australia and this had led her to be scouted by one of the top ladies soccer colleges who had brought her to the States on a scholarship. She had high expectations and the lives of her and her twin brother depended on her being successful. She has one goal and that was to succeed and get signed.
“Some of those girls out there play with heart, and some play just because they’re good at it, but you? You bleed the game.”
Jordan was a great character, she was strong, she was motivated and she knew what she wanted and how to get it but on the flip side she had a heart of gold and was sympathetic and empathetic. While her past may have dictated her future she had never let it get the better of her and if anything the bond that she had with her brother was even stronger and even more endearing. These two only had each other and with many sacrifices made Jordan needed this to work.
Brody, Brody, Brody, I felt so sorry for Brody, all he wanted was to be loved but in return he got nothing. My heart broke for him so many times but pressures also made him make some stupid choices. Pressures from outside forces and even from himself led him down a shaky path and one that was only ever going to end badly, but he wanted to be someone, he wanted his dad to be proud rather than embarrassed, he just wanted to be accepted, just how far would he be willing to go?
“Real life is ugly and raw, and it effing sucks.”
Jordan and Brody’s paths cross when one of their professors marry them up for tutoring, Jordan having tutored her brother with dyslexia was the ideal candidate to help Brody and also they had sport in common, they understood each other’s pressures. While they didn’t necessarily get off on the right foot, it soon became apparent they had a lot more in common.
“...your strength is like the sun, Jordan. It feeds me. And if you don’t let me go, I’ll just use it all up until you have nothing left.”
Kate McCarthy really delivers on the emotion, the character build up and connection for me was on point and these two totally endeared themselves to me. My only little niggle was that in some places for me the story dragged and my interest began to wane a little, but then something else would happen and we would be back on track. As usual with a Kate McCarthy read you could not help but be drawn into this story, I felt it all, the conflicted thoughts, confusion, the pressure, the pain, the love, the hate, the fall outs and everything else in between. These two really had it rough but at least they had each other. At times they both needed tough love and they both delivered it and were on the receiving end, but that went a long way in showing just how much they meant to each other and how perfect they were together. They could read each other, they knew what the other wanted and needed and whether they initially wanted it or not their connection was soul deep. These two truly were soul mates.
“I luv u like a squirrel luvs his nuts.”
“I luv u like Kanye luvs Kanye.”
Another great read from Kate McCarthy, this is one author that knows how to deliver an emotional punch and this one is no different.
“It just got so hard. And it felt so good, just for once, to not be anything at all.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitiv mal etwas anderes
The End Game ist in meinen Augen mal was anderes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it
this is the first book I have read by Kate McCarthy, but it will not be the last. This story kept me glued and fighting sleep so I could keep reading. the main characters were both flawed and real and being Australian I loved that the lead female was an aussie. Story had many twists and turns and felt very real.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome read !
What can I say about this book ? It's left me in an emotional mess . I've experienced so many highs and so many lows I feel wrecked. Saying I loved this book doesn't seem in any way enough, I felt as if I lived this book what happened to Brody and Jordan affected me as well. There were times during the book I wanted to scream at Brody decision making but this book gives a realistic insight into the pressures faced by professional athletes to be the best. There are many twists and turns, funny scenes that make you laugh out loud, sexy scenes that get you hot under the collar and scene that shocked me to my core making it one of my favourite reads this year !

4.0 out of 5 stars Great 4.5 star read
This is my first novel by this author and i really enjoyed it. It did sit on my kindle for a while before i dove in but i am glad that i did. The story is original and the characters feel real and their flaws are true. I loved the tension, the unknown and the love that these too had. It was written so well and became nearly impossible to put down.
Its a great sports read without too much boring sport talk.
Its got the feels that make you care.
Its got the characters that also make you care.
