Getting a Grip

Rate this book
This isn’t my life. Okay, it is my life, but not the way I envisioned it would be.

I wasn’t supposed to be a divorced mother of three when I turned the big 4-0. Sure, I expected the fine lines, gray hairs and left over baby belly. What I didn’t expect was expanding our family get-togethers by one… my ex-husband’s new child bride. Ok, ok, she’s not young. Maybe.

Did I mention this is not the life I planned?

It could always be worse, I know. I’m lucky to have a mother who loves to babysit, a best friend who loves sarcasm, and a new friend by the name of Greg who is a child whisperer and tells me my eyes are pretty.

Sigh… Greg.

The perfect, Adonis-like God of a man who keeps flirting with me. At least I think he’s flirting with me. It’s been so long, I don’t really know.

Between birthday parties, a few ill-advised bouts with make-up, and a whole slew of gymnastics classes, it’s finally time to take back some control.

So, while my girls learn all about how to grip the bar, I’m going to learn how to get a grip on my life. And maybe my heart.

ADORABLE!!! I laughed so hard at times, and got choked up as well. I especially liked how believable and relatable this book was, from day to day stuff going on to the inner turmoil the characters dealt with. AND there is "something" in this book that I have NEVER, yes NEVER, read about in ANY book!!! A very real-life "something"!! Lol.

"How did I get here? How did I go from being a pretty woman in my twenties to flat out frumpy and pushing forty?”

description

I very much enjoyed this story even if it did end with a cliffhanger. However, since the conclusion is releasing on August 18th it’s only a matter of days and that makes me a happy reader. I’m looking forward to more of this heroine. Elena is VERY relatable as a single mom having to deal with her douche ex and his Home Wrecker Barbie new wife. The author portrayed a realistic feel to Elena’s body insecurities due to the constant crap her ex spewed at her for over a decade.

"I get it, ok?” Keri continues scrubbing the icing off her shirt. “You’re still mad because James chose me.”

description

The hero, Greg Brady, yeah that’s really his name!

description

All joking aside, he’s a perfect looking Adonis, a wonderful father, and yet he has an insecurity that I haven’t read at all in any of the hundreds of books I have purchased. It was an interesting spin on our sexy alpha and to me made him even more enduring.

description

I very much enjoyed this story and am excited to see how the conclusion unfolds!

"Call it a gut feeling, but somehow, I don’t think our love story is over yet.”

This is the story of 40 year old Elena, single mum of three young girls on the path to rediscovery after her husband of 15 years leaves her for his mistress. This hilarious journey was one of the most 'real' books I have read in ages. The characters struggle with 'normal' body flaws and 'normal' problems like dying during a spin class, a hyper kid destroying everything and lack of bladder control after childbirth.
 photo blowcandlesout_zpsgvpxdx0m.gif

As you get further into the story it's hard not to fall in love with Elena and her 'posse' which includes best friend Callie, her mother, Greg and of course you can't forget the kids that help to make this story even funnier. It's also very easy to HATE her bastard ex husband and his barbie mistress turned wife. I pissed myself at all the barbie doll references for the stealing husband whore.

 photo barbie_zpsnnsv6vuq.gif

Well this did have a first for me and I am sorry if this is TMI but a and the most surprising thing is thing is it works really well in this story about learning to overcome insecurities. Apparently it can even be an advantage, although I'm not to sure ;)
"Oh my gosh, you can stick it in my butt!" I squeal.
"Do you know how long I've waited to try exit-only stuff, but I've been too scared to do it? But you won't hurt as bad," I blurted out.

So this was a light fun read, a little slow paced at times but kept me thoroughly entertained. The ending was so unexpected and I am stinging to know what's going to happen with these two.

Favorite Quotes:

“I feel bad for poor Bruce Jenner.” She shakes her head and sighs. “It’s no wonder that poor man had to become a woman… If you had your choice of being married to that woman or wearing a dress for the rest of your life, I’d choose the pantyhose, too.”

Poor kids. They can see the trampolines, rings, and foam pits… it’s all right in front of their wide little eyes… and no one will open the gate to let them in and run free. I get it. I feel that way right before they open the doors at Target during Black Friday every year.

Briefly, I feel an urge to run out there myself and start tumbling. But then I remember the last time I jumped on a backyard trampoline with Fiona to show her my front flip, and I peed all down my leg. They don’t tell you about that in your health classes in high school. We’d see a huge drop in teenage pregnancy in this country if we only told the poor girls about weak bladders and hemorrhoids. I’m sure of it.

“Callie, I have to join a gym.” That finally gets her attention. She looks at me, face pale, hand over her mouth. “It’s a fate worse than death,” she whispers.

My Review:

Getting A Grip was my first venture into the works of M.E. Carter and I am a smitten kitten. She is my new favorite author as she has well mastered the tricky skills of putting fun and interesting words in a delightful and unendingly entertaining order upon the page. She definitely has the word voodoo and I quickly fell under her spell somewhere on page one. I now want all her words. I giggled, smirked, snorted, and laughed aloud as I gobbled up this amusing and delectable treat. How have I not discovered her genius before this?

Getting A Grip was a fun yet pertinent read with a crisp and engaging storyline, snappy wit, and cleverly delivered one-liners and quips. Woven into the humor and deftly handled with smooth aplomb were real-life issues pertinent to many of us - betrayal, body image and insecurities, broken marriages, and navigating the treacherous waters of child-rearing with contentious and childish ex-spouses. I reveled in noting the main character’s transformation and may have over identified with her, just a tad, as I actually voiced a few exuberant cheers when she found her voice. M.E. Carter has mad skills and a new fangirl.

Such a wonderful book. Elena - heroine is in her late thirties, divorced, with three kids and a douchebag of an ex-husband and his new barbie wife.

But karma is a bitch and I just loved how Elena turned his asshole ex down at the end - too late he realized, how a wonderful woman he let go.

Ok, but this is not what the book is about, it's about her getting a grip of her life after divorce and about finding that female confidence again.

And about romance of course. And so we have Greg, also divorced, also with a bitchy ex-wife. They met at their kid's gymnastic class and become friends initially but then you know... He is sweet and caring and thoughtful and just perfect, and she is funny with hilarious one liners and generally a good woman so yeah.. those two together were wonderful.

Anyway, it was very much like chick lit but with heavy dose of romance and most of all it was very very funny. A lot of LOL moments, for real.

And I just can't wait for the next book to come out to see how their story will go.

‘For the last year, I’ve been swinging through life, trying to hold on but losing my grip. Sometimes I don’t even realize how close I am to failing. But if I’m going to be successful, I have to let go of my insecurities and my fears so I can grab onto things differently.’

Well this was delightful, refreshing story. I have read another series by this author and they were 5-star books so I had high hopes going into this read.

Elena is a busy single mum with three beautiful young daughters. Her marriage ended after her husband left her for his much younger secretary. Now, we all know that after you have lovingly carried children inside you, your body never quite bounces back to the way it used to be right? Stretch marks, saggy boobs and a not so strong pelvic floor are just some of the gifts our babies leave us with. However, those 'imperfections' tell your story and are part of the road map of your life.

‘You don’t get stretchmarks and less than perky breasts from maintaining a teenage figure. You get them from really living.’ - Elena

Unfortunately, Elena’s ex-husband decided he wanted a perky and younger woman by his side. This was a huge knock to Elena’s self esteem and has left her with big insecurities about her body. Some men are just douche bags. The most important thing to her is the happiness of her children and she is a wonderful mother to them.

At a local play group Elena meets Greg. He too has gone through a similar break up with his ex and is a loving dad to his daughter. He is tall, handsome, has a nicely groomed beard and incredible abs. Okay he is definitely the sort of guy Elena could daydream about when she is having 'alone' time. It has been so long since she had any sort of intimacy in her life that at first she doesn't realise he is flirting with her. Her ex really did a number on her, making her feel like no one else would give her a second glance.

Well that sucker was wrong because Greg is very interested in Elena. Firstly, he is fantastic with her kids and her best friend's wayward son. Secondly, he is freaking hot. Thirdly, he can cook. Fourthly, he has a smoking hot body. Fifthly, he is genuinely interested in getting to know Elena. Sixly, the man can kiss like gah! Seventhly, he is an incredible father to his little girl.

‘It’s been a long time since anyone has made that kind of effort for me, and I can’t help but wonder, of all the people in the world he could have asked out, why me? I’m nothing special.’ - Elena

Okay, you get the picture, basically he came into Elena's life and has completely made her see why things never worked out with her husband. He has treated her in a way she has never been before, she feels attractive and worthy of his attention. He makes her feel valued as a mother and a lover. I guess what I am saying is that these two are made for each other, she deserves to have someone in her life like Greg and he deserves to have a wonderful woman like Elena by his side.

‘I see you. And I like what I see.’ - Greg

However, when you have ex-partners and children with them life can be a bit complicated. Break ups can completely change people, often bringing out the not so nice side of their character. Greg & Elena have their own individual issues with their ex's. One moment things are going fantastic and then a simple phone call can change everything.

I absolutely loved this story, I was crushing on Greg big time. I love that they are both 'older', she is 40 and he is 38. This whole story was so realistic and just felt so real. We all know someone who has been through a marriage break and gone through the things that these two do. They both had their own insecurities about themselves and just felt so familiar to me, like they could be my neighbours. I was so emotionally invested in their story that I had a moment where I put my book down and cried, letting the tears roll down my face. I love it when a story affects me like that!

Now, the only tiny issue I had was that this is the first of a two part series. I didn’t know this at the beginning and there is nothing in the book description or title to indicate it is not a stand alone. However, having said that, I am thrilled at the prospect of another book so I can read more about this couple.

This a book about real life and not about fantasy.. this story really touched my heart and I'm grateful that the author took the time to write this! It's great to have a sense of reality in the book world! The story was raw, hurtful, funny, but most important it was real! The characters had very real issues and you really have to read this book with open eyes and a sense of reality! Kudos to the author! I hope your Greg comes!

Do you ever feel like you need a reset? Like just get back to the factory settings and start again? The problem with the default setting on life is that you love your screen saver and apps. So you just learn to get rid of the viruses you downloaded along the way.

Elena's life his getting a hard reboot. She is divorced with 3 kids. She got rid of her cheating husband virus but loves her kids and best friend. She is just trying to get everyone to school and home with the minimum of junk food and tantrums. She relies on her best friend to keep her sane which is an total oxymoron to expect that from Callie. Elena doesn't have it all figured out, but she has enough of it together to fake the rest.

I'm nothing special. No that's not right. I'm special to my family and friends. I'm nothing overly remarkable. I'm kind of ...average.

Greg is a newly single dad who cherishes his time with his daughter. He is protective, sweet and easy on the eyes. He has lived enough to know that beauty both inside and outside. He values loyalty, humor and the same level of commitment to kids that he has. Greg finds a kindred spirit with Elena.

Greg and Elena are adults. I mean really adults. They think about the consequences of their actions BEFORE they do them. Amazing They have the scars and insecurities to prove they have been around the block as well as the divorce court. They aren't foolish enough to think everything is going to be hot dogs and roses.

Karma can be a bitch sometimes. But I love it when she is on my side.

I love M.E. Carter's characters. They are real and flawed. They have bad days. They apologize when they are wrong. They get grumpy and frustrated and happy. Just like us.

But then I remember the last time I jumped on a backyard trampoline with Fiona to show her my front flip, and I peed down my leg.
They don't tell you about that in your health classes in high school. We'd see a huge drop in teenage pregnancy in this country if we only told the girls about weak bladders and hemorrhoids.

Getting a Grip is funny and truthful. You are going to wish Elena and Greg lived on your cul-de-sac.

I thought this book was going to be a romantic comedy, but this book is NOT a romantic comedy.
There are some funny parts here and there but I would NOT call this a romantic comedy.
It is not a bad book at all, but there are some things here and there that really drags it down.

Here is what I liked about the book and characters:

The FMC and MMC are older characters in their late 30’s. (not the more standard age of 20-25).
There is some joking and joshing between friends and family.
There is actual real life problems that they try to deal with, things like insecurities and divorce etc.
It has a good and honest way of portraying parenthood.
The main characters a single parents.
The FMC is just a average woman (just like she says herself in the book) average height, average weight just average not a model.
The MMC is sweet and patient and understanding.
The book addressees a very unheard of “problem” for men in romance books, and this makes the book and character rather unique and the story rather original. (which is always a good thing)
There is body positivity vibes for men in the book.
The author thought outside the box with the MMC.

Here is what I disliked about the book and characters.

The book has a cliffhanger ending (not something I like)
It is not really a romantic comedy, even-though there are some funny and sometimes cringy situations.
The FMC is almost over the top self deprecating and insecure. (some is from the way her ex-husband talked about her etc. but still somewhat too much)
The FMC is almost self-loathing and has some internalized fat-phobia vibes.
There is body shaming both from the FMC towards herself and others towards the FMC, and also some towards the MMC.
I really like when characters especially in rom-coms and contemporary romance are somewhat relatable/”realistic” or truer to life…. But this book and the characters were almost too real life and also over the top.
The sex scenes were kind of mild and boring and almost fade to black scenes.

Did I like the book: Yes, but I would not read it again…. Too many issues that drags it down.
Was it a good book : Yes. But same issue again and it was not really my cup of tea.
There is a part 2 to this book …. but I will not read it.

I really like that the author thought outside the box with the MMC and that bumps the rating higher than if it was not in the book.
Greg and his issue/”flaw” was refreshing to read in a romance book and it would be even more refreshing to read/see this in romance books more.
Greg was the character that “made” the book really ….

(5 stars)

Elena has gone through a brutal divorce, her husband has moved on and married the "other" woman. Now, Elena takes care of their three daughters and just basically lives day to day. No she isn't sad about loosing the husband, he was crap after all, its more that she is sad that she has to share her girls, and that the one that was supposed to love her even with all her "faults" didn't. When Elena meets Greg, who has also been through the ringer with his divorce, she doesn't want to get her hopes up. After all she couldn't keep her husband happy, but when her bestie helps her with a make over, Elena starts to see the person who she really is, a beautiful one, even if she does have a mom bod. Meeting Greg throws Elena for a loop, he is perfect in every way, why is he interested in her? Will Elena be brave enough to take that final step with Greg, or will her insecurities get the best of her?

This book hurt my heart! The way Elena's ex treated her and body shaming her made me cry! This story doesn't really go the way you expect it to, like the absence of a good throat punch when "Barbie" needed it. I love how Elena is with her girls, and this story really depicts the true story of divorce and how people act in front of their children. I'm gonna say something that is gonna shock people, I loved the ending! It's perfect, even if I was sobbing like a baby! I give this 5 stars and can't wait for the next book from M.E. Carter!

Getting a Grip was absolutely funny, uplifting and so much more than I expected. M.E. Carter paints a picture that all of us deal with on a daily basis -- one where we doubt our worth, where we doubt our looks, where we doubt ourselves. She shows us that all of us, including those considered to be the hottest on the planet, have a measure of doubt and something about themselves they don't like. The key is to "Get a Grip" on yourself and your thoughts and turn those around.

Elena suddenly finds herself divorced, raising three daughters. She is beautiful and absolutely funny and while she sees some of that in herself...She has allowed others to dictate how she should feel about her body, namely her ex-husband. No matter what her friends and family tell her, she still sees only the flaws.

Greg is also a divorced dad of a daughter and while he is described by all who meet him as an Adonis, he also has certain doubts about himself and his body. Through a series of connections with their friends, their exes and gymnastics, these two will discover that there is so much more to them than their short-comings.

"What makes me pause is not this question. It's the sudden realization that he thinks the same thing about me. What I perceive as physical flaws don't matter to him at all."

What we find here is not only funny, but a beautiful story of self-discovery and of what would seem to be true love. But there are always detours that must be taken on that road and these two will have to take the ride of a lifetime to find out if the journey is worth the risk.

Everytime I pick up a book by M.E. Carter I know I'm not going to be let down. Getting A Grip was no exception! Carter writes relatable characters and story lines that make you ponder your reactions to life events you have experienced.
I loved this book. The dialogue between characters had me laughing my pants off most of the time and other times I wondered if I would be as astute, assertive, and witty if in those situations. Even the secondary characters were so well developed, I wanted more of them and had to remind myself this was not their story (yet I hope).
From Bend Me Over Barbie to Zach I want more of the secondary characters, especially Callie (I wish I had a Callie bestie too),but not until we find out what happens with Elena and Greg. I can't wait for the next book.

First, can I get a hallelujah for a heroine that is so incredibly real that I could actually see myself as her??!! Please?? Thank you.

I haven't said much about this book to my peers or even in ME's group because it hits so close to home for me. It's brought up some issues I have been dealing with for 2 years since my own divorce. Those insecurities Elena feels throughout the book so many of us want to roll out eyes at? They are real people. Regardless of how your ex treated you, when you get divorced, there is always a part of you that wonders why. Wonders what you could have done differently to make it work. Wonder had you been just a bit skinnier if things would have been different. IT SUCKS!! There were times I wanted to shake Elena and make her see how beautiful she was. Make her realize she was worth it but when I finished I wondered why I didn't have those same thoughts about myself. Because you know what, just like Elena, I am worth it. Just because it didn't work out with someone doesn't mean I am broken, just like Elena wasn't broken no matter what her ex told her.

And where in the world can I find a Greg? ME, when you find your Greg can you find me one? I'll do the same if I find my Greg first. We are in this together. He's the guy we all dream about and few who are lucky to actually find. He's sweet, attentative, and is a great dad to his own daughter. Of course perfection doesn't really exist and we find Greg has his own issues he is dealing with.

Carter, a huge thank you for writing about divorce in such a raw and real way for the second time around. Two times with two different endings but so real in their own ways. It shows that you understand exactly what some of are going through ourselves. Now, the second book better get itself together because I can't deal with that ending. All that hope you gave use throughout this book was squashed. I am not thanking you for that.

You know when you finish THAT book? The one that you cannot put down? The one that makes you laugh so hard you cry and then cry so hard your family questions your sanity?

Getting A Grip: A #MyNewLife Romantic Comedy by M.E. Carter is THAT book. This is one of the best RomComs I have ever read and one so real, it knocked my socks off.

Elena is a divorced mother of 3 young girls. A woman who is now single due to her jerk of an ex-husband that married a much younger woman. Even though Elena takes the high road in her relationship with her ex and his wife, he is totally undeserving as he put the blame on their relationship failing on her. Eleana is a great mom, doing her best for her family and dealing with the cards she was dealt. With a wonderful support system of her mom and her best friend Callie, life is just full of surprises.

Then we have Callie, the best friend who is probably THE best secondary character I have ever read. She is married to a man who is just as much of a child as her young son and that young son is CRAZY!! I was tired just reading about him and his crazy antics!! I couldn’t imagine having a child constantly on the go like that!

Then they meet and become friends with Greg. Oh, Greg. I don’t think my words can even justify how absolutely terrific this guy is. Greg will absolutely steal your heart! He’s a single dad, making friends in a new town and he is dealing with a crazy ex wife and trying to raise his sweet little girl. Greg is fun, sexy, understanding, and just fits into a easy friendship with Callie and Eleana.

Here is where we are going to get real for a minute….

I LOVE to read but honestly, 95% of the stories I read are written about the typical alpha...broad shoulders, trim waist, has an amazing job, is athletic, has a jaw line that could cut glass, is hung like a horse, etc. etc. Then let’s not forget the hip, young, fit woman who looks exceptional in everything she wears (or doesn’t wear), keeps herself together and is rocking those nice boobs and flat tummy.

Honestly, I rocked that back in my early 20’s too. But now I’m 40 and well, that definitely isn’t me anymore. I had my kids in my mid-to-late-20’s and 14 years later, I’m still trying to lose the “baby weight” and firm up everything. It’s taken me years to be remotely comfortable in my own skin and I still have times where I feel horrible about myself.

My point, you may ask??

Getting A Grip is probably the most realistic book I’ve read. M.E. Carter went and blew my mind and did something I have never, EVER read about. She made all of her characters authentic. There’s a woman who is insecure about herself but trying to teach her girls not to be. Another whose marriage is not all rainbows, great sex and I Love You’s every two seconds. And then there’s an alpha. An alpha who is also VERY insecure about himself and his body.

And that ending. You won’t see it coming from a mile away. And it’s a great ending to this book.

Getting A Grip is a book about real people, real life situations and real love. I cannot say enough about this book. This, people, is truly life and I enjoyed reading every single moment. It is one of those books that I know I will go back and read again (and actually, I already have). I look forward to book #2!!

I. AM. SERIOUSLY. IN. LOVE. WITH. THIS. BOOK!

Sorry, for the all capitals, but this book had me laughing out loud so much and so hard that my cheeks hurt and are sore as heck. This is definitely one of the better RomComs out there, the book literally just placed in my top 10.

This book is about Elena Monroe, a newly divorced mom who is trying to get a grip on her life after her husband cheated on her. I truly love and respect Elena, she is a real inspiration, and she is a better woman than I ever could be... and she is fictional. Honestly though, she is truly incredible is juggling raising 3 beautiful girls and doing what is best for them, even if that means being civil to her ex (he really doesn't deserve it) and his vulture of a new wife. She is takes the high road when many of us would fall to the pettiness and bitterness of a breakup. She truly doesn't say a bad word about her ex.... in front of her kids. She is really a good mom and a role model, and she is so REAL. She is picking up the pieces of life and is dealing the hand fate has giving her and she does it with a grace that is humbling.

This book also has a wide ranging of characters that steal your heart, like the secondary character of Callie and Elena's mom. Callie is a hero of mine, she continuously supports her friend, believes in her, but she does not let Elena stay "safe." She pushes Elena beyond her comfort zone and her boundaries because she wants Elena to truly LIVE her life, not just exist. Oh, can we also talk about Callie's son??
Mini hulk? I swear, I cracked up reading about the shenanigans her son and Callie would get themselves into. Then there is her mom, who is freaking hilarious. I love the people in Elena's life, they truly are a support system and a community that are there for her and vice versa.

Then there is also Greg, her new male friend. I freaking LOVE Greg, he is all alpha where it counts, but ME Carter has done something that is usually never done in romance. She humanised the Alpha in way that is new, he has insecurities about himself and his body, he has problems he is dealing with on his own that really endears you to him. He is funny, intelligent, kind and understanding. The love he has for his daughter is truly heartwarming. He comes into Elena's life when she didn't know she needed him to, and he truly gets her and it is a beautiful journey to read about.

I really liked this book from start to finish, the different kinds of love portrayed from family love to friendship to the new romantic love she is experiencing, this is a story about real people with real insecurities, and real struggles. "Getting a grip" is hilariously witty, written in the language of my heart; sarcasm about the realness of people and the obstacles that life throws in your way. Also, that ending? Daaaaamn, those last 10% stomped all over my heart in sharp heeled stilettos. I mean, it is 2 AM and I'm writing this review because I cannot let go of the fact that I NEED the second book! Gah! I am not above begging.

I am not over-exaggerating when I say, I am extremely looking forward to the next installment in this series!

This was a funny, entertaining, real and in a way also a unique story.

When I started this book I thought it was an easy to read rom com but just after a few chapter I understood it was so much more.
Getting a Grip was a story about self-discovery,acceptance of our flaws and the courage to start again even if the future is uncertain.

I've really appreciated how the author delivered this meaningful story with a light atmosphere and a bunch of great characters.

Elena is hands down one of my favorite heroines, she is so relatable, lovely with her three little girls,a very good friend, never acting weird for her age.

I was heartbroken at the end...I need to read the sequel as soon as possible.

You always know you're getting something good when it's an M.E. Carter book. But this one - the romance AND the comedy were both stellar!

Elena is 40ish, divorced (because her hubby left her for his secretary!!), mother of 3 trying to figure out what to do with her life. Her ex and his Barbie doll new wife (who you will want to bitch slap several times during the book) are involved enough with the girls to be a major annoyance in her life.

Her ex is an asshat who tore her down before she left and her self esteem needs a boost. She has a best friend, Callie, whose life is no perfect either, but who boosts her up and reminds her she has value. The conversations between them will make you giggle.

Enter kiddie gymnastics - and single dad Greg. Sparks fly between Elena and Greg, although she will deny it and Callie will insist it's happening. The banter between all three of them is pee your pants funny!

You will enjoy watching Elena "getting a grip" on her life and watch things progress with Greg.

It's sweet and romantic but at the same time will give you some belly laughs! GO GET YOURSELF THIS BOOK PEOPLE!!!

P.S. - I need more Greg & Elena!!

Getting A Grip is a wonderful and unique story that is more than a RomCom. Although it is definitely humorous, it is also real and full of heart and emotion.

“Elena, you’re a woman, not a child. You’re supposed to have curves and scars and embellishments.”
“Embellishments? Is that what we’re calling cellulite now?”

almost 4 stars!
I absolutely loved the banter in this book. Callie and Elena have the best friendship. Enters Greg who is hot and a great dad. He gives it just as good as them at times. I have to say the whole not perfect thing really appealed to me. neither of them are perfect physically to others, but the each other they fit. I enjoyed that idea.
here comes the but... it's not over there's another book! I need it now please!! Looking forward to see how it all plays out. I like that it didn't end on a mystery or bitter note, just a part of life issue. Makes it seem more real.

Whoa! M.E. Carter went and did it again! Y'all, this book is so relatable and just real.

When you first meet Elena, you totally just get her. Elena is divorced with three kids. Her ex-husband of 15 years has left her and married his mistress. In the process of that, Elena has to rediscover herself.

With the help of her mom and her best friend, Callie, she becomes more confident and finds love again. With herself and with another. The insecurities weighed heavy on Elena (as we all go through them) and she meets Greg. Greg helps Elena to see the beauty within herself.

You feel what Elena feels and you completely can relate to her struggles and to the events in her life. It's so refreshing to read a story about a woman turning 40 and finding herself for the first time in almost 15 years.

Can I just say that Greg is an absolute hunk! He fits in well with the super fun friendship that is Elena and Callie. He becomes friends with them quickly. Greg too is freshly divorced and a single dad. His daughter attends the same gymnastics class as Elena and Callie's kids. He enters Elena's life at the perfect time. Greg sees the beauty and helps Elena to feel sexy but also valued. Something she hasn't felt in a long time.

I adored this story and of course devoured it so quickly. I became invested in these characters. I actually feel like I know them, or a version of them.

The ending to this story was so unexpected and just about broke me. But thank goodness that M.E. Carter has written a follow up to this story. We will get to hang out with these characters again and I'm so happy about that. I already miss them.

You rocked this book Carter. It was funny, heartfelt, surprising and down right REAL! Thanks for sharing this story and maybe teaching a little self love along the way.

Elena Monroe is a divorced mother of 3 young girls. Another woman blindsided by a cheating husband who blamed her for the failure of their marriage, leaving her full of insecurities in the wake of their breakup. Sounds familiar?
With the help of her mother, a faithful best friend and a newly found male friend, Elena will work to find herself again and get control of her future.
This is my first read by this author and I just loved this book. I fell in love with the characters. Elena is so real, a mother doing what’s best for her children while finding her new place in life; her friend Callie, whom I named “calamity” Callie because that girl and her child are just something else; and Greg, a man who comes into her life to remind her there’s more to her than she gives herself credit for and to teach her that even perfection will feel inadequate.
This is a story about real people, with real struggles, wrapped in the sarcasm brought on by the close bonds of true friendship and family. It’s a fresh take into finding love again told with a lot of humor without losing sight of the very real problems that affect most of the people and families who go through a divorce.
I found the writing impeccable and the story has an easy flow and quality that will make it difficult to put down.

Do you Farah, take this book to be added into your we go together like a wink and a smile shelf?

I do, I do, I do!

Dear whoever who reads this review, get this book. If 4O is still a long way to go, it's okay, use this book as a guide when you finally hit the big 4O and facing the same dilemma as Elena. Elena was not perfect, she was not a supermom, she had loads of issues with herself but those things are unimportant as she didn't give up but continued to be the best that she could be for herself, kids and friends. The author mentioned that she was waiting for her Greg to appear in her life, I truly hope she's into sharing coz I really don't mind... FMF/FFM/MFF. I loved every single characters, they'll take away the microphone from me if I list them all hence trust me and check them out yourself.
The cliffhanger? Nah... It wasn’t a cliffhanger to me, just a promise for more heart stopping moments in book 2.
Vader, my loyal smart-ass phone was a bit confused as I was hugging him loads of times as I was devouring this book, usually I do that when I read Penny Reid's stuffs. Anyway, r.e.a.d. this. Hopefully it'll be a winner for you too.

M.E. Carter has gone in a completely different direction with her newest novel, Getting a Grip and it’s outstanding!  She has a fresh, often hilarious perspective on divorce and dating in the modern age.

Elena, a recent divorcee` is going through the daily motions of raising 3 daughters, and all that entails including dealing with the ex, recitals and gymnastics classes.  Her best friend Callie is with her every step of the way, offering support and snark in kind. Enter Greg, a divorced dad with a smoking hot body and an eye for Elena.  What ensues is hilarious, hot and, at times, heartbreaking.

M.E. Carter has a way of developing characters that you become invested in; that you want to be best friends with, and that’s definitely the case with Getting a Grip.  I laughed out loud, I cried and I shook my head.  For being her first Rom-Com, M.E. is a natural.

Getting A Grip is what I would call a real life story. The heroine is not your typical twenty something heroine. She is a middle aged divorcée with three wonderful children. This isn't a book without a best friend that is consistently there. There isn't a best friend that is mentioned in the beginning of the book and when mentioned later in the book you don't know who it is. The story is just as much about friendship as it is about romance. There is a much loved hero that everyone will wish is theirs. Reading Getting A Grip is like a breath of fresh, clean, real air. I can't wait for the next book.

I will 100% be honest here:

This book rocks.

It is so REAL and shows real life situations that people live with every single day. The characters are easy to relate with and you find yourself rooting for them.

Greg and Elena are the best. Like ever. Their relationship evolves slowly over time.

And that ending. Just wow. Just ... I can't. YOU MUST READ THIS.

Seriously, ME just hit this one outta the park. LOVED it.
