Debut novel from Laura Campbell. Not your typical romance novel. It's funny and twisted.
Meet Ivy, your typical girl until she was wronged by two people. It touching on bullying and quirky personalities.
It's funny. Quirky and completely different. It's not your typical love story, it's dark and twisted and completely different to your usual romance.

- Reviewed in Australia on 20 February 2017Absolutely loved this book by a new author on the scene!!!
Emily's story hooked me from the very beginning!!
This story is like playing pass the parcel! Every chapter revealed a new layer to the story & the characters.
This is not your typical romance. It's a story of deception, betrayal, a little bit of stalking, with a side of crazy thrown in for good measure! Lol
There isn't too much I can tell you about this book without give away the plot twists (plural!) but I will tell you that it's fast paced & incredibly engaging!!!
I can't wait to read more from this new author!
She knocked it out of the park for me!
Well done Ms Campbell 👏👏👏
- Reviewed in Australia on 19 March 2017I loved The Evolution of Ivy! And that really is what the story is about. I can't wait for more and I really hope Ivy does get her happy ever after but with more twists along the way 😉
- Reviewed in Australia on 6 February 2017Firstly I want to say that I applaud anyone that takes the plunge to write a book. It is not an easy task and takes time and courage to put it all down. So hats off to you Lauren for achieving it.
Unfortunately this book was not for me. I don't mind my books to have a bit of darkness to them, but this one is full of it. There is so much revenge and manipulation going on, it was hard to invest in the characters and all their underhandedness and a couple boarding on psycho.
I felt it could have been a great book if a few things were different, and that maybe if the author had good beta readers in her corner that were honest with her. The story line is not a bad one, and if there was only one crazy girl doing the manipulation, I would have enjoyed it a bit more. I didn't feel the heroine deserved her HEA, as the relationship is based on lies.
Ivy / Emily meets a new boy in grade school and they become best friends. Circumstances come about that he has to move away with his family and doesn't return for three years. In that time, Ivy has an accident and now has facial scars. Brooks doesn't recognise her anymore and starts dating another girl. Ivy holds a grudge for 10 years, and after inheriting a substantial amount of money, she decides to fix her face and win Brooks back.
I really tried to find some good to this book, and the only thing I liked was Brooks. I wanted him to find his HEA, but I am not sure of his choices.
*I received a copy for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Winning Brooks with a beautiful body...knock them dead Ivy
Verified PurchaseThe Evolution of Ivy: Poison was Ivy reinventing herself to become more appealing to Brooks, a boy she loved since the fifth grade. Ivy transformed herself to become more appealing towards Brooks. Ivy grew up poor but attended a private school full of rich kids. Ivy felt inadequate and ugly compared to the rich beautiful people. Ivy's one wish in life was to be beautiful.
Ivy's not a bad person, but she certainly had some bad thoughts. Considering what Ivy endured while attending a school with rich kids, it didn't surprise me how extreme her attempts were to become a new version of herself. Ivy had a wild imagination which she shared in many scenes with her fantasizing about the man she wanted.
The story was told from multiple points of view, but mostly was shared from Ivy's.
The dynamics between these four characters was clever. Main and minor characters blended well together. They each added growth to the other characters and helped enhanced the story. Each character had their own sense of diabolical destruction. Some nice surprises were announced along the way.
The story contained a dated timeline with both the present and past. The format and transition of this timeline was seamless. The timeline helped establish both main and minor characters.
The story was a game of seduction. Ivy inserted herself easily into a world she briefly knew of from interacting with these people in school.
Lauren brought a touch of humor into Ivy's character with some clever dialogue. Lauren has a great imagination and the episodes she created with Ivy were spectacular. I felt like Ivy had this wild imagination where all these ideas flowed with ways to interact with Brooks. Lauren's approach and tactics for unconventional romance was top notch.
This was Lauren's debut book which I discovered from a book club I follow. They were promoting book 2 with a blurb stating a romance with mental instability. When you put it that way I couldn't resist reading how unstable Ivy's character was. Little did I know that Ivy would indeed provide so many shocking circumstances. Lauren upped the ante on this story. She took unconventional to a whole nother level with this psychotic character who lived in her own fantasy land. The inner dialogue was a great addition to the story as it added wittiness. The writing was top notch. I would recommend this book to anyone who can handle demented thoughts and acts of revenge.
The book received good reviews, but a few found Ivy's character was too poisonous, toxic, and manipulative. I on the other hand, found Ivy's character was refreshing and brilliant. The story was clever and unique. I like odd characters who act crazy out of desperation.
"Hey, you’re on the pill, right?” “Yes, of course,” I say, and I’m not really lying, because he didn’t specify which pill. I take Xanax and Claritin every day." Maybe I'm weird, but I found this quote was hilarious and fit accordingly to Ivy's character.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 ‘One man’s poison ivy is another man’s spinach’ stars!
Verified Purchase“It’s not the game that’s important,” I say. “It’s the prize won in the end.” I smile.
Whaaaa?
*shakes head*
Whhhh *splutters*
Ok, I’ll try again…
What the hell did I just read? More to the point – I need book two NOW. You cannot leave me dangling like this.
I can hand on heart say that I without a doubt didn’t like any of the characters in this story. However, I felt that was part of its charm. I was engrossed from the very beginning at the lengths Ivy would go to to get her man. I couldn’t wait to see certain characters get their comeuppance *mutters* Best not go there or I’ll go off on one again.
I am almost positive I must’ve resembled a guppy on more than one occasion and muttered ‘What the what?’ or a slightly less censored version, lol. For me, this tale is reminiscent of the 80s-classic novel, The Lives and Loves of a She-Devil with a twist.
Like ivy is wont to do, this story has woven itself into my psyche and refuses to leave until I know what happens next. A truly stunning debut. If you’re looking for a story with a difference, then I can’t recommend this book more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Super spannend!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ivy is crazy and I love it. Ivy is the pettiest of all so ...
Verified PurchaseLong story short: Ivy is crazy and I love it.
Ivy is the pettiest of all so naturally I love her. I connected with her. But mainly, her inner dialogue was incredible. Her head was full of crazy thoughts but I could swim in them all day. Revenge is pretty fun but it's not as fun as watching Ivy serve it on a plate hot and ready to go. She's fiesta and hardcore and I could gush on her for hours.
The alternating POV's were great, and the different thoughts we were getting from the characters was a great way to secure yourself in the story. It also made the story flow more easily.
I'm not crazy about the cover but it's easy for me to over look those kinds of things. It was a great story full of great wit and characters that hooked me from the beginning. This is also the author's debut novel and I'm 100% impressed and sold. I look forward to whatever Lauren comes up with next. And if Ivy was a real person, I'd want her on Team Talon. I'd want her on my side for the rest of my days.
